- Summary/Abstract:The article summarizes an international academic conference held in June 2024, which was dedicated to source editions from the period of the January Uprising. It provides a detailed introduction to a volume of studies that analyzes the evolution of editorial traditions and methods for processing historical documents related to the 1863 uprising over the last three centuries. The author charts the path from 19th-century memoir publications to contemporary digital projects, emphasizing the importance of a critical approach to sources. She discusses and reviews individual academic papers included in the publication, which cover, among other things, the history of source editions in Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus, the specific nature of uprising memoirs, and methodological issues of past critical editions. Furthermore, she points out contemporary challenges faced by researchers, such as the need to create new bibliographies, the digitization of resources, work on digital databases (e.g., a dictionary of exiles), and difficulties in archival research caused by the current geopolitical situation.

- Summary/Abstract:The basic goal of the paper is to discover the factors that shape the history of publications of sources for the January Uprising of 1863–1864. The concept of 'archival sources' represents all forms of records stored in the public and private archives. In conditions of conspiracy and insurgency, the creation and storage of documents were marginalized. The considerations encompass the publication of sources based on ideological motives, the aspiration to preserve memory, consolidate cultural attainment, protect against destruction, foster popularization, and enable scientific research. In the publication of sources related to the history of the uprising, several distinct periods can be identified. Immediately after the downfall of the Uprising, a desire was shown to store the documents explaining the problems and the political attitudes. In the following periods, scientific problems and polemics began to take a more prominent role. Subsequent advancement in source publication served to expand reflection on the selection of sources, the basis for publication, as well as the structure and scope of commentary.

- Summary/Abstract:The history of source editions on the January Uprising in Lithuanian historiography is shorter compared to Polish historiography by at least several decades. Its first stage is dominated by sporadic publications in emigre periodicals. Academic-level editions came in the 1920s and never developed beyond an initial phase in the interwar period. The educational current prevailed, with particular focus on the collection and publication of personal accounts. Plans of issuing a separate publication of personal accounts did not come to fruition. Source editions which have appeared after the restoration of the independent Lithuanian state are fragmentary and rather heterogeneous. As in the past, the focus is on popular editions, particularly Lithuanian translations of previously issued sources. The edition process is not being coordinated. All this leads to the conclusion that a tradition of source editing for the January Uprising has not yet fully developed within Lithuanian historiography.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines the genesis of the tradition to publish collections of documents pertaining to the history of the January Uprising (1863–1864) and the development of this tradition over the period of the last 160 years. It demonstrates its close connection with the anniversaries of the events of the uprising, assesses the contribution of each collection to the employment of the particular range of sources in scholarship, and reveals the advantages and disadvantages of particular collections. It is noted that over the entire period, more than a thousand documents have been published, revealing various aspects of the uprising in Belarus, which has created a valuable foundation for numerous scientific and analytical works on this topic. The issues that have arisen in the development of the tradition by now are also identified: uneven development of collections of various archival repositories, partial identification of the necessary materials, often insufficient level of scholarly processing of documents and preparation of printed publications, etc. Recommendations for the development of publishing activities in the research areas most relevant for issues of the January Uprising are also given.

- Summary/Abstract:Following the example of numerous editions of the diaries of senior commanders of the Civil War (1861–1865) in the United States of America, the author postulates the critical development and publication of a selected canon of memories of independent commanders of armed units of the January Uprising (1863–1864). The proposed edition concerns ten previously published accounts of insurrectionist commanders (Edmund Callier, Antoni Jeziorański, Roman Rogiński, Bronisław Deskur, Józef Miniewski, Ludwik Żychliński, Zygmunt Miłkowski, Zygmunt Rzewuski-Krzywda, Karol Kalita-Rębajło, Józef Oksiński) and two manuscripts (Władysław Cichorski-Zameczek, Maksymilian Wacław Broniewski).

- Summary/Abstract:The bibliographies of Polish memoirs by Edward Maliszewski and Józef Skrzypek record 240 memoirs issued as separate publications in Polish from 1864 to 1939: in partitioned Poland and in exile, and subsequently in the Second Polish Republic. Statistically, three memoir books were published each year. The highest number in a single year occurred in the years preceding the 50th anniversary of the Uprising and in the anniversary year. Over seven years (1907–1913), readers received 69 titles, which accounts for about 28% of the titles for the entire 75 years’ period. The first memoirs were published immediately after the fall of the Uprising in exile (Bendlikon, Paris, Leipzig), and from the late 1870s, they were published in the Polish territories. Throughout the entire period, Galicia held primacy in the Uprising memoirs market, with the largest centers being Lviv and Kraków. The Russian partition came in second, even though it was only after 1905, after the censorship conditions changed and the policy towards Poles was eased, that works about the Uprising could be published. After 1913, more titles were published there than in Galicia. Ultimately, Warsaw placed third, behind Lviv and Krakow, while Poznań came in fourth. The biggest role was played by commercial publishers, including the largest publishing houses. Several diarists published their texts at their own expense. Since the first decade of the 20th century, various organizations and research institutions have also undertaken publishing initiatives. The memoirs published until 1939 generally do not meet today’s editorial standards and the requirements of researchers. There is a need for their critical reedition, as well as a need to develop a bibliography of the January Uprising diaries (manuscripts, printed books, press articles).

- Summary/Abstract:The Russian archives contain an abundance of correspondence of Polish post-Uprising exiles. Historians were only able to ascertain this when access to the archives was made possible by the political changes of the 1990s. Many copies of family correspondence, especially from the Lithuanian-Belarusian lands, are in possession of Russian and Polish researchers on this subject and so editing this material should be considered. It is difficult to discuss here all the cognitive value of this correspondence, but at least two things should be mentioned. Firstly, the letters of the deportees to their parents make it possible to carry out more complete research into socio-cultural adaptation and socio-economic integration into the Siberian environment. And secondly, the correspondence of parents with their children provides opportunities for research into the maintenance of family relationships at a distance. Due mention should also be given to the need of publishing the correspondence and rich writing legacy (historical and philosophical/religious) of Tomasz Bułhak (1801–1895), exiled to Siberia first for his participation in the conspiracy of Szymon Konarski and later for his role in the January Uprising. In his writings we find interesting reflections on the necessity of conspiring against the Russian invaders.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper discusses results of research on the scientific edition of the legacy of Ludwik Weeber, a veteran of the 1863 Uprising. The legacy consists of diaries, fragments of memoirs concerning Weeber’s participation in the January Uprising and dedicated to the veteran’s ancestors, as well as personal documents from family collections. Before the Uprising, Ludwik Weeber was a commissioner at the Governorship in Lviv. During the 1863 Uprising, he fought in the units of Leon Czechowski, Antoni Jeziorański, Karol Krysiński, and Kajetan Cieszkowski-Ćwiek. In Cieszkowski-Ćwiek’s unit, he served as an aide-de-camp, mainly managing the unit’s office. Weeber’s legacy documents his life path, family origins and history, and finally his interests in hunting, forestry, and hunting weapons. It will therefore be a comprehensive documentation of his life and activities not only during the January Uprising, but also his post-Uprising activities, both within the milieu of 1863 veterans and in Lviv organisations and associations.

- Summary/Abstract:After the declaration of martial law in the Kingdom of Poland in 1861, the mayors of towns and cities were obliged to constantly notify the Russian authorities of all 'extraordinary events' that occurred in their subordinate territories. From that moment on, reports began to flow to the civil and military chiefs of the districts about various events, including patriotic demonstrations, religious processions, the display of flags with national emblems in churches. After the outbreak of the January Uprising, the reports also concerned, among other things, the marches of insurgent troops. The reports – so far not very often used by researchers – provides a lot of interesting information about the events of 1861–1864, including especially about the attitudes of the population towards the Uprising and the Russian authorities. The article discusses the content of the reports from the area of the southern part of the Kielce District in the Radom Governorate. Possible ways of making these sources available to a wide range of readers were also presented.

- Summary/Abstract:In this article, I draw the readers’ attention to a collection of historical sources (the Bernardine Collection) kept at the Lithuanian National Museum, which is almost unknown to researchers. The history of its discovery began in 1989, when during conservation work in the Three Kings Chapel of the Bernardine Church in Vilnius, documents and objects from the period of the January Uprising were discovered. This so-called Bernardine Collection was part of the archive of the Vilnius insurgent organization. A brief review of the content of the documents is supplemented by an analysis of Belarusian-language documents from this collection, related to the campaigning activities of the Vilnius 'Reds', as well as materials related to the life and activities of the last leader of the uprising in Lithuania and Belarus, Konstantin Kalinovsky. The material includes such texts as 'Kaimszczyna na Litwie i Bielajrusi' (May 26, 1863); 'Do Ciebie swiaty nasz Ojcze' (September [?] 1863); draft of an unpublished issue of the newspaper 'Mużyckaja prauda' (dated October 12, 1862), and a Belarusian translation of an appeal of the Polish National Government (of May 3, 1863). Familiarity with the catalogue and documents of the Bernardine Collection convinces me of the uniqueness of the discovery, which can significantly expand our knowledge of the events of the Uprising in the territories of contemporary Lithuania and Belarus.

- Summary/Abstract:This article examines how Artur Grottger’s works, which were related, or suspected of being connected, with the January Uprising, were widespread and visually known in the Kingdom of Poland under censorship imposed by the Russian Empire. The scope of consideration is limited to the status of his works related to the Uprising published in the Kingdom of Poland (such as those published in magazines and albums) as well as attempted legal imports of Grottger’s works into the Kingdom, and to the time until the 1905 Revolution, when the censorship system was temporarily changed. Grottger’s works were well known in the Kingdom of Poland, but this concerns mainly his non-political works. Of the four series directly related to the Uprising, only illustrations of the 'Lituania' series were published a few times in magazines with their titles hidden. Other patriotic illustrations appeared very rarely. His most-published and best-known work was the 'War' series, which passed the censorship on the pretense that it depicted war as a universal human folly. Usually, the connection between Grottger and his works and the Uprising was not mentioned, and when it was, it was only expressed in a cryptic way due to censorship, so it was not well understood by the general public unless they had the knowledge of art or the opportunity to travel to the Austrian territory. It was only after the 1905 Revolution that Grottger and the January Uprising were publicly linked in the Kingdom of Poland.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is a critical analysis of the editorial work of Janusz Iwaszkiewicz, a professionalhistorian and professor at the Stefan Batory University in Wilno, relating tothe publication of the first part of 'Memories of 1847–1928' by Edward Woyniłłowicz. It is with sadness that I must say that the book published in 1931 does not meet thecharacteristics of a professionally edited historical source. Professor Iwaszkiewiczrepeatedly replaced words arbitrarily, often deleting entire parts of the manuscript, without any information about his own interventions in the text. He changed the meaningand wording of Woyniłłowicz’s opinions about the described people, especially whenthose were 'politically incorrect' (e.g. critical comments about Józef Piłsudski). Hecompletely removed from the text the author’s references to the additional materials hehad collected. Not only did he not correct factual, chronological and biographical errorsappearing in the text, but he also made extremely poor work of preparing footnotes tothis valuable historical source.

- Summary/Abstract:The card index of post-January-Uprising Polish exiles to Siberia was created at theInstitute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences thanks to the work of a team ofresearchers led by Prof. Wiktoria Śliwowska. Material (c. 200,000 cards) about 40,000people were collected. The information concerns people deported to Siberia and to otherplaces in the interior of the Russian Empire. As part of an ongoing National HumanitiesDevelopment Program project, a team of researchers is entering the information containedin the file into a computer database, which will enable independent scientificresearch and genealogical searches. All biographies are verified; however, there arevarious source criticism and interpretation problems that the team is trying to solve. These problems include: the large size of the card index, the heterogeneity of material(in terms of format; content – a number of people are only mentioned, with little tono further information; method of making records – manuscripts, printouts; presenceof several people with the same name and surname, etc.), the criteria of deportation(people deported before the outbreak of the January Uprising; some people deporteddeep into Russia; people who went to Siberia voluntarily, etc.). The presented problemsshow the complexity of the problem of verification and interpretation of biographicalinformation. The development of a biographical dictionary/database creates newpossibilities for research on the deportations of Poles to Siberia in the 19th century.
