Collections of documents on the history of the January Uprising in Belarus: The development of the publishing tradition and the main achievements

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the genesis of the tradition to publish collections of documents pertaining to the history of the January Uprising (1863–1864) and the development of this tradition over the period of the last 160 years. It demonstrates its close connection with the anniversaries of the events of the uprising, assesses the contribution of each collection to the employment of the particular range of sources in scholarship, and reveals the advantages and disadvantages of particular collections. It is noted that over the entire period, more than a thousand documents have been published, revealing various aspects of the uprising in Belarus, which has created a valuable foundation for numerous scientific and analytical works on this topic. The issues that have arisen in the development of the tradition by now are also identified: uneven development of collections of various archival repositories, partial identification of the necessary materials, often insufficient level of scholarly processing of documents and preparation of printed publications, etc. Recommendations for the development of publishing activities in the research areas most relevant for issues of the January Uprising are also given.
