Summary/Abstract: The basic goal of the paper is to discover the factors that shape the history of publications of sources for the January Uprising of 1863–1864. The concept of 'archival sources' represents all forms of records stored in the public and private archives. In conditions of conspiracy and insurgency, the creation and storage of documents were marginalized. The considerations encompass the publication of sources based on ideological motives, the aspiration to preserve memory, consolidate cultural attainment, protect against destruction, foster popularization, and enable scientific research. In the publication of sources related to the history of the uprising, several distinct periods can be identified. Immediately after the downfall of the Uprising, a desire was shown to store the documents explaining the problems and the political attitudes. In the following periods, scientific problems and polemics began to take a more prominent role. Subsequent advancement in source publication served to expand reflection on the selection of sources, the basis for publication, as well as the structure and scope of commentary.
