Summary/Abstract: The article is a critical analysis of the editorial work of Janusz Iwaszkiewicz, a professionalhistorian and professor at the Stefan Batory University in Wilno, relating tothe publication of the first part of 'Memories of 1847–1928' by Edward Woyniłłowicz. It is with sadness that I must say that the book published in 1931 does not meet thecharacteristics of a professionally edited historical source. Professor Iwaszkiewiczrepeatedly replaced words arbitrarily, often deleting entire parts of the manuscript,without any information about his own interventions in the text. He changed the meaningand wording of Woyniłłowicz’s opinions about the described people, especially whenthose were 'politically incorrect' (e.g. critical comments about Józef Piłsudski). Hecompletely removed from the text the author’s references to the additional materials hehad collected. Not only did he not correct factual, chronological and biographical errorsappearing in the text, but he also made extremely poor work of preparing footnotes tothis valuable historical source.
