On the need to publish the writing legacy of the post-January-Uprising exiles stored in Russian archives

Summary/Abstract: The Russian archives contain an abundance of correspondence of Polish post-Uprising exiles. Historians were only able to ascertain this when access to the archives was made possible by the political changes of the 1990s. Many copies of family correspondence, especially from the Lithuanian-Belarusian lands, are in possession of Russian and Polish researchers on this subject and so editing this material should be considered. It is difficult to discuss here all the cognitive value of this correspondence, but at least two things should be mentioned. Firstly, the letters of the deportees to their parents make it possible to carry out more complete research into socio-cultural adaptation and socio-economic integration into the Siberian environment. And secondly, the correspondence of parents with their children provides opportunities for research into the maintenance of family relationships at a distance. Due mention should also be given to the need of publishing the correspondence and rich writing legacy (historical and philosophical/religious) of Tomasz Bułhak (1801–1895), exiled to Siberia first for his participation in the conspiracy of Szymon Konarski and later for his role in the January Uprising. In his writings we find interesting reflections on the necessity of conspiring against the Russian invaders.
