Summary/Abstract: The jubilee collection A Sense of Fate is published in honor of Prof. Inna Peleva, DSc, one of the most prominent literary scholars and teachers at Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, whose comprehensive and rigorous research work has an extraordinary impact on academic knowledge and cultural life. This volume contains 24 scholarly articles, accompanied by a foreword by Dimitar Krastev, outlining Prof. Peleva's research profile, as well as a detailed bibliography by and about her. A Sense of Fate brings together the authoritative voices of literary scholars from academic institutions in Plovdiv, Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Blagoevgrad, Pisa, Ankara, Bologna, Dublin, and Strasbourg. The papers focus on many different works and writers, entering into dialogue both with each other and with a number of studies by Professor Inna Peleva. The first seven articles offer a broader panoramic view not only of Bulgarian literature and not only of the present day. They reveal different comparative perspectives, intertextual connections, or examine narrative conventions and constructions, leading trends. The next robust body of studies delves into the stories, authors, and works from the period of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The last, conditionally distinct part includes texts that focus on the period before 1944 and go back to Sofroniy Vrachanski's Appeal to the Bulgarian People from 1810.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is part of a larger study on the Bulgarian novel from the first two decades of the 21st century. It skips 2011, when two important novels appeared – Timeshelter by Georgi Gospodinov, and Elevation by Milen Ruskov, as much has already been written about them in different media. The most important achievements of the next four years are presented separately for each year. General trends are highlighted, both within one year and across the four years simultaneously. The general trends, in turn, are entangled in the rich and varied panorama of the Bulgarian novel written throughout the entire second decade of the 21st century.

- Summary/Abstract:The article explores the connections between Shakespeareʼs Hamlet and Hugo von Hofmannsthalʼs tragedy Electra. The context for the observations is based on the notion of the theatre-poet and the works of art he created as a programmatic category for the literature of modernity. The emphasis is on the scenes where the vengeful heroes talk to their mothers. The gender aspect is highlighted in the interpretations of the two main dramaturgical figures. The analysis of Electra observes the main theatrical mechanisms that turn the free Hofmannsthalian interpretation of Sophocles' tragedy into a symbolic work with the main content of the negative maternal archetype.

- Summary/Abstract:The article puts together two impromptu and intentionally accessible reflections on Alek Popov’s legacy provoked by his untimely death. Its purpose is mainly to enlist and delineate the literary achievements and innovations that Alek Popov introduced in the field of Bulgarian literature,as well as to indicate potential topics for future and hopefully upcoming research. The article briefly addresses four of his novels – “Mission London”, “Black Box”, the first of “Palaveevi Sisters”, and “Mission Turan”. It also pays attention to the role of language, genre, discursive registers, and fictional narrative in his trademark satiric novels. The article addresses the importance of the Bulgarian satiric tradition – and Aleko Konstantiov in particular – as well as the worldly manner of importing and creatively reapplying Anglo-Saxon canonical strategies and techniques in quest of universally approachable satiric critique and comic effect. The text concludes with an observation about the aesthetic solitude of Alek Popov in contemporary Bulgarian literature.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the results of a study focused on the novels,published after 1989, related to Sofia’s recent past – the time of communism in Bulgaria and recent transformations in the city’s life. The main problem in the analysis is how the authors see the spaces of the city juxtaposing the specifics of public and private places in the capital city of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. Among the main topics of the novels are mapping of different places in order to reveal the life in the centre and features of people’s standard of living in the peripheral residential districts, descriptions of the parade grounds with ideological monuments and hidden places behind the facade of the socialist publicity. The mechanisms of narrative constructions presenting the architectonic of the communist town are shown through analytical cross reading of the novels Wunderkind by Nikolay Grozni, Party Headquarters by Georgy Tenev, The Sex and the City by Milena Fuchedzhieva and Matey Stoyanov’s Niki Franseto and Ales Gut. The changes in the city and thinking about the city of Sofia as a living entity are presented through the novel Teodora Dimova’s novel I do not know you.

- Summary/Abstract:The object of attention in this text is the book Ivan Teofilov, About Joy and Language. A conversation in Letters with Georgi Gospodinov (Sofia, 2023), defined by its authors as an epistolary novel – a novel in letters,created between 2021 – 2022. The article trails and comments on Ivan Teofilov's memoir about his own life, highlighting individual and essentially important events in each part of the book. The book is the result of the authors’ desire for this epistolary novel to be perceived as a magnificent critical work on Bulgarian prose, poetry and theater of the 20th century in the Bulgarian socio-political context for almost a whole century. About Joy and Language is a biography of a major intellectual person, but also a biography of the complex Bulgarian times in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.

- Summary/Abstract:The first poetry book by the Bulgarian poet Yordan Palezhev – Sunny Slit – had been presented to a publishing house in 1972, but it was published 15 years later, in 1987 – in a very different cultural-historical and literary context, which prevented its timely and in-depth reception, and this resulted in the subsequent exclusion of the book from the Bulgarian literary-historical narratives. The marginalization of the poet’s work is studied from three perspectives – the ideological “sins” of the author that lead to a belated debut, the critical reception of his poetry, and the poetic contexts of the poetry book.

- Summary/Abstract:The current paper is an attempt to reconstruct the Peter Manolov case from the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The hunger strike of the poet and public figure from Plovdiv, which put his life at serious risk, was announced as a result of the forced seizure of his personal archive by State Security officers. Manolov's action was accompanied by local and international support. The event became one of the most vivid and emblematic manifestations of dissent against the totalitarian power in Bulgaria on the eve of the fall of the communist regime.

- Summary/Abstract:The intention of the present text is to compare two emblematic poems by the Bulgarian poets Ivan Tsanev and Boris Hristov, between which there are much more differences than similarities. In fact, the only obvious common element between these poems is the image of the tree – central in Tsanevʼs poem and appearing only in the last stanza of Boris Hristovʼs one. The aim of the article is to reveal the profound difference between the ways in which each of these poems interprets the motif of the relationship between the human and the symbol of the tree, offering a brief overview of some crucial interpretations of the image of the tree in philosophy and literature.

- Summary/Abstract:The article makes a comparison between Dimitar Talevʼs novel The Iron Candlestick (1952) and its film adaptation The Iconostasis (1969) by Todor Dinev and Hristo Hristov. It traces the strategies of de-epicisation through which the film, in line with the new aesthetic attitudes of the 1960s,transformed the epic novel about the formation of national consciousness into a film focused on the drama of the individualist artist Rafe Klinche. The paper analyses the ways in which the film's ʻmodernʼ representational strategies (stylization, metaphoricity) found themselves bound up with a rapidly clichéd imaginative repertoire of the ʻnativeʼ and the ʻautochthonicʼ.

- Summary/Abstract:Chudomir (penname of Dimitar Chorbadzhiyski, 1890 – 1967) started working for the Zora newspaper in 1932 and left it in 1940. Furthermore,the beginning and the end of his collaboration are recorded primarily in memoirs, which generally adopt the negative viewpoint towards this “reactionary” newspaper that was prevalent in the decades following the Second World War. The article collects all known testimonies, reveals some differences in them, and tries to explore the biography and psychology of this very popular writer and artist. Following the trend of his time, Chudomir underestimates his contribution to Zora, even though a great part of his famous short stories appeared in this newspaper.

- Summary/Abstract:This text tries to answer the question whether the figure of the old bachelor manages to provoke the interest of Bulgarian literature. The focus of our attention will be different texts during their creation and genre specifics, and in the course of observations the literary history will be neglected at the expense of the formation of common problem cores that would help us (re)construct some of the literary biographies of the old bachelor. The first of them is laid on the motive for parting with the bachelor life. The stories The Windmill and The Woman with the Golden Hair by Elin Pelin, as well as the novel The Adventures of Gorolomov by Yovkov draw attention to those unusual events and/or circumstances that drastically overturn the usual bachelor existence. In the second biography, which we can distinguish (the novel Uncles by Ivan Vazov), the old bachelor arouses curiosity and interest in himself, on the one hand, because of his extravagant appearance, and on the other, because of his immersion on the role of a philosopher. Despite the specific differences of the literary-historical and socio-cultural contexts, the product of which are characters such as Boyanov and Kostov, it is not difficult to see that in both works the problem of the inferiority of the old bachelor's life is brought to the fore.

- Summary/Abstract:The capital of the Ottoman Empire is the city that Ivan Vazov visits the most. In the span of 36 years, the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature travelled to the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn 12 times. The present text is focused on his last visit from August to September 1908, which was a continuation and addition to the excursion from the previous spring. The people’s poet, who travelled for the specific purpose of a medical examination and consultation, found the ancient city in exaltation because of the Young Turk revolution, which had broken out a month and a half prior. Thus, he became an immediate witness to the street demonstrations. During his free time, he visited places and monuments that he couldn’t see during his previous trips. Among them was Eski saray (today better known as Topkapi) - the palace that served as the residence of he Ottoman padishahs for four centuries. In connection with this Ivan Vazov published a short text A Glimpse into the Eski Saray in a magazine. The present paper studies it for the first time.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines Bernard Shaw's play Arms and the Man, the plot of which is connected with the Serbo-Bulgarian conflict in 1885. The play is juxtaposed to separate texts by Ivan Vazov, who also explores the war. The collision between the two conceptions of war raises arguments about heroism and hygiene, about heroism and cowardice, about strength of character and human frailty in wartime. The article ends with Vazov's ironic look at the heroic Serbo-Bulgarian war, presented in the story A War upon a Sofa, which compares the specific reactions of “sofa patriots” to important historical and military events.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the authenticity of the poems by Rada Kazaliyska(1821 – 1907), a teacher, published in the Rodopski Ustrem newspaper in the 1960s. They have been preserved in transcripts of relatives, and have dates and exact locations – To my Father (the village of Gorno Raykovo, August 10, 1852) and To my Mother and her Speech (the village of Raykovo, 1853,May 11th). These texts contain echoes of conceptions and invocations that are familiar from the poetry of Dobri Chintulov, Stefan Stambolov and Ivan Vazov. Thanks to the poems attributed to Kazaliyska one can observe a specific type of media – authenticity construction, based on specific sociocultural and political situations from the past and the present century.
