Summary/Abstract: This text discusses the themes of love, suffering, and the longing for happiness through the prism of five novels published between 1856 and 2003 that are representative of the imagery of the modern mentality – Gustave Flaubertʼs Madame Bovary, Leo Tolstoy's The Kreutzer Sonata,John Fowlesʼs The French Lieutenantʼs Woman, Frederic Begbedeʼs Love Lasts Three Years, and Paulo Coelho's Eleven Minutes. The works are analyzed not in terms of their cultural and historical significance, but as signs of narrative conventions, sociopsychological realities, behavioral patterns, and reversible emotions.
