Summary/Abstract: The article explores the connections between Shakespeareʼs Hamlet and Hugo von Hofmannsthalʼs tragedy Electra. The context for the observations is based on the notion of the theatre-poet and the works of art he created as a programmatic category for the literature of modernity. The emphasis is on the scenes where the vengeful heroes talk to their mothers. The gender aspect is highlighted in the interpretations of the two main dramaturgical figures. The analysis of Electra observes the main theatrical mechanisms that turn the free Hofmannsthalian interpretation of Sophocles' tragedy into a symbolic work with the main content of the negative maternal archetype.
