Summary/Abstract: The article makes a comparison between Dimitar Talevʼs novel The Iron Candlestick (1952) and its film adaptation The Iconostasis (1969) by Todor Dinev and Hristo Hristov. It traces the strategies of de-epicisation through which the film, in line with the new aesthetic attitudes of the 1960s,transformed the epic novel about the formation of national consciousness into a film focused on the drama of the individualist artist Rafe Klinche. The paper analyses the ways in which the film's ʻmodernʼ representational strategies (stylization, metaphoricity) found themselves bound up with a rapidly clichéd imaginative repertoire of the ʻnativeʼ and the ʻautochthonicʼ.
