Summary/Abstract: The article examines Bernard Shaw's play Arms and the Man, the plot of which is connected with the Serbo-Bulgarian conflict in 1885. The play is juxtaposed to separate texts by Ivan Vazov, who also explores the war. The collision between the two conceptions of war raises arguments about heroism and hygiene, about heroism and cowardice, about strength of character and human frailty in wartime. The article ends with Vazov's ironic look at the heroic Serbo-Bulgarian war, presented in the story A War upon a Sofa, which compares the specific reactions of “sofa patriots” to important historical and military events.
