The article gives a brief update of the biographical data and the works of the great writers again, but also presents the importance of the literary circles of that era in the development of his work. Very important is the journalistic activity of the writer in exile, and his effort to create a connection and an understanding between France and Germany through the cultural ways. Heine was one of the greatest figures of German culture, which was enthusiastically received by the Romanian literature, where he has even created a fashion. The influence of the German writer among the Romanian personalities proves itself not only in the large number of translations of the poetry of the German poet, but also in the numerous articles about the writer who was published in the press of that time and even in the imitation of his lyrics by the Romanian poets.

This article is dedicated to the Belarusian poetry published in translations into Polish at the beginning of the 21st century. Special attention is paid to the anthology of the young Belarusian poetry “The navel of the heaven”, and to the anthology of the 15th–20th century Belarusian poetry “I didn’t tilt of my head under the power”. The author refers to similar publications, which have appeared in Poland in recent years, and compares them to the latest volumes of translations. She tracks changes in the list of authors representing Belarusian poetry, and draws attention to the emergence of new translations, not only the texts of young poets, but also the subsequent Polish adaptations of the works by classics of Belarusian literature. The author also mentions some gaps in the overall panorama of the twentieth century Belarusian poetry, which was presented on the pages of the anthology “I didn’t tilt of my head under the power”. Minor weaknesses and deficiencies in these publications have been discussed.

This paper presents an analysis of the similarities in some phraseological units containing numerals and is based on selected phraseological material from two Balkan languages – Bulgarian and Romanian, as well as on phraseological equivalents from other languages, including Albanian, Greek, Russian and English. Based on the theory of the existence of a dominant component among the phraseological unit’s elements, which may be considered the semantic core of the idioms, the purpose of the proposed analysis is to illustrate that numerals play a significant role in constructing the phraseological semantics, despite the rule that phraseological units are stable word-groups with partially or fully transferred meanings.

Translation is a double act of communication. Every translation must diffuse a contextual situation in a specific language and must produce a text that has a similar effect on the readers from different cultures. It thus appears that to be francophone in Romania implies an active participation in institutional and associative life of the Francophone Word. You must participate to the economic, technical and cultural development of the Romanian society by virtue of the French language. Except their purpose to represent our country abroad, each Romanian travel guide shows the contribution made by our culture to the evolution of the term Francophonie. Thus, the purpose of the present article is to point out the essential role that Romanian guide books play in the progress of Francophonie.

The article introduces the concept of the phraseological trace – a tool for the study of modified and non-modified idioms (phraseologisms) in the poetic text and its translated version. It analyses Wisława Szymborska’s poems Census, Conversation with a stone and A speech at the lost-and- found, along with their translations into Spanish. The aim of the juxtaposition of the original text and its translations is to pinpoint the differences in conceptualization and determine their sources.

The purpose of the article is to research the literary translation activities of Paisius Velichkovsky in the context of spiritual culture of Ukraine in XVIII century. Methodology. The research methodology includes historical, epistemological, and learning sources methods. Scientific Novelty. The author has found that Paisius Velichkovsky was the founder of the Ukrainian ascetic literature, bringing the source of monastic education to the Ukrainians. Due to it, the first translations of the Church Fathers appeared on the Ukrainian territories, which positively influenced on the spiritual practice of the monks and spiritual life of Ukraine. Conclusions. Paisius Velichkovsky returned the monastic life to its ancient foundations. He was the upgrader the Ukrainian religious life and the first Ukrainian monk mentor and leader in the ascetic reading. Paisius Velichkovsky’s translations enriched the spiritual wealth and monastic life of that period.

Technological war transposed in real-life situations is at the core of Andy Briggs’s contemporary series for teenagers HERO.COM and VILLAIN.NET originally published between 2008 and 2010 and already translated into Romanian. This paper revolves around the idea that in a century dominated by mass-media and globalization, translators should be able to promptly respond to the publishers’ requirements and make sure that they have chosen the best option for their future target readers. In Andy Briggs’s novels, the never-ending clash between good and evil acquires almost graphic representations embedded in a rather detailed vocabulary related to war and modern technology. Translating such novels becomes a challenge for those who have to bear in mind that nowadays teenagers all over the world have the possibility to communicate on the internet and are thus accustomed to the kind of language the characters in these novels use.

The article deals with the Lithuanian equivalents of the English term greening in translated documents of European Union institutions. Term greening is more and more frequently used in EU documents and it reflects the objectives of the green policy trend of the EU – making various fields of activities, industries, technologies and other things more environmentally friendly. In Lithuanian documents there are nearly eighty different language units corresponding to greening and nearly a half of them are terms – nouns or word combinations with nouns. More than three quarters of the terms are made from the noun ekologija or have elements made from this word. The majority of such equivalents of greening are complex terms naming actions; one equivalent is also used as a name of the field of science and a few name characteristics. Ekologiškumo didinimas and ekologizavimas are most frequently and consistently used terms. In other cases greening is translated as aplinkosauga, aplinkos tausojimas, žalinimas or other terms and their combinations.

The age of globalization is also affecting the field of translation. Stereotypical expressions are increasingly used, especially when dealing with legal discourse. Thus, the task of the translator is merely to convey the message in the most comprehensible way for the reader. This paper attempts to present the difficulties in achieving the same legal effect when translating EU legislation from English to Romanian. The first part discusses some theoretical perspectives on legal translation trying to determine the best way of translating a legal text. The second part of my paper will be based on a comparative analysis of two translated EU directives, in terms of structure, vocabulary and syntax. The corpus of my study is based on translations of official EU documents from English to Romanian.

The subject of the study is a linguistic image of plants, taken from the poems of Father Twardowski, compared to his translation into Russian. One of the main features of Twardowski’s poetry, regardless of the themes of the works, is the attitude to the sacred. The proposed analysis is based on a research model of cultural linguistics, referring to the cognitive paradigm, while taking into account the applied translation strategies and techniques. The lingual image of the plant is considered in two dimensions. As part of the monolingual analysis mentioned individual plants appearing in the texts examined, their symbolism and role in human life were presented. Conversely, the bilingual analysis showed what happens to the linguistic image of the world when it is transferred to another language, in this case Russian.

In analyzing contemporary New Testament translations, the author looks for answers to the following questions: 1) how does daily life appear on the pages of the Bible, 2) how far the elements of everyday language penetrate into the translations of the Holy Writing? It is found that the common style in the sacred text manifests itself especially in the use of neutral, unmarked forms that work in the spoken language. In the analyzed translations the elements of the pathetic style are denounced as well as the expressive registers of the current style are not used.

The paper aims at a comparative analysis of four Polish retranslations of Heart of Darkness, not to show the differences but to reveal the procedures and techniques by means of which translators, editors, and publishers refract (manipulate) the translated text. It is my contention that particular versions of Heart of Darkness function in diverse ways in Polish culture and each rendition is targeted at a different audience. The retranslations will be analysed using the methodology of the Manipulation School and its development by André Lefevere.

Repair is one of the fundamental mechanisms for the organization of spoken discourse, specially of natural, spontaneous conversation which is characterized by the linearity of discourse and a scarce possibility of planning. The presentation deals with the study of discourse markers (DMs) as signals of self-repair in spontaneous Italian language. The work presents the analysis of the metatextual function of DMs, as they facilitate the organisation of the conversation by enabling the speakers to intervene on their prior speech: by self-repair (providing examples, appropriate definitions and additional information or paraphrasing) or by self-correction (correcting morphological, syntactical or phonological mistakes, finding more suitable collocations of words or attenuating the meaning of their words). The analysis on seventeen native speakers has shown that the speakers are very creative in using (sometimes even inventing ad hoc forms) more than fifty different types of DMs to signal the above mentioned pragmatic functions for speech management. This multitude of forms demonstrates the dynamism and flexibility of spoken language, but it also proves that it is far more important and useful to deal with their pragmatic functions since bare classifications cannot capture all their (pragmatic) potential. On the other hand, it has been proven that self-repair i) is potentially pertinent to the structure of any utterance; ii) represents an effective alternative to other mechanisms of spoken discourse; iii) can predominate over the production of the following element(s) by reorganizing the syntactical organization of previously uttered discourse

The present paper outlines the application of contrastive analysis to some specific types of wordplay excerpted from British children’s books and their translations into Bulgarian. The aim is to show that it can be successfully used as a tool for exploring the issue of wordplay translatability. A contrastive analysis model for wordplays and their respective translations is proposed. It is based on Attardo’s General Theory of Verbal Humour (GTVH) (1994) and uses six parameters which serve as the basis for comparison. The paper concludes that the contrastive analysis model can help determine the translation strategy employed and the type of equivalence between the source text wordplay and its translation.

This paper is a discussion of the West Ukrainian slang used by the Ukrainian community inhabiting the Warmia and Mazury Region. Particular attention was paid to the interference and integration of the slang with the Polish national language and the literary language. It should be stressed that the economic and social transformation thft the inhabitants of Warmia and Mazury have experienced have resulted in the disappearance of the slang in their natural, rural environment. The study material was gathered from the respondents for whom the slang is a primary language. This paper presents the priceless and disappearing linguistic material of the Ukrainian community subjected to assimilation processes.
