GAMIFICATION AS A STIMULATOR OF A FULL-FLEDGED USE OF ONLINE SERVICES

Author(s): Peter Murár / Language(s): English Issue: 1/1/2015

Gamification is a relatively new way of motivating people towards a desired behaviour through elements well-known from computer games. These elements can have significant impact on the desired behaviour, especially in the field of web design and UX design. They can lead to an increased activity of visitor’s engagement and help them to fully benefit from the website. This paper identifies some websites with perfect implemented gamification. It also presents a gamification concept designed for the Slovak academic portal. We believe the gamification might boost visitors’ activity and increase valuable user ratings.

Skala preferencji tradycyjnej vs. nowoczesnej roli kobiety w społeczeństwie: konstrukcja i walidacja

Skala preferencji tradycyjnej vs. nowoczesnej roli kobiety w społeczeństwie: konstrukcja i walidacja

Author(s): Mirosław Kofta,Wiktor Soral,Zuzanna Kwiatkowska,Sylwia Kapusta,Małgorzata Mikołajczak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 39/2016

A new measure of preference for traditional vs. modern role of a woman in the society was developed with Polish female university students as participants. A 16-item scale was selected in a principal component analysis from the list of 65 normative statements describing desirable features of woman’s character and behavior. Eight items formed the traditional role sub-scale, the remaining items formed the modern role sub-scale. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a better fit of the two-dimensional (with separate sub-scales for the acceptance of the traditional vs. modern role) than the one-dimensional solution (one bi-polar scale). The new scale showed acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0,76 for the traditional role, and 0,74 for the modern role). As predicted, acceptance of the traditional role correlated strongly with traditional and benevolent sexism (the latter including, two additional dimensions: maternity and aesthetics). The modern role subscale appeared to be a reliable predictor (much better than the traditional role, with weak negativeimpact) of the acceptance of pro-choice statements, as well as of support for free access to contraceptives and sexual education. Overall, the new scale shows satisfactory reliability and seems to be a promising instrument for measuring the content of female social identity.

ARE WE DIGITAL MASTERS OR CAPTIVES? A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF PANOPTIC VERSUS SYNOPTIC EFFECT OF SURVEILLANCE IN SOCIAL MEDIA

ARE WE DIGITAL MASTERS OR CAPTIVES? A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF PANOPTIC VERSUS SYNOPTIC EFFECT OF SURVEILLANCE IN SOCIAL MEDIA

Author(s): Erdem Öngün,Aşkın Demirağ / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2014

The era we are living in is the one where we are exposed to a massive attraction of social connectivity based widely on digital forms of media. The most common one of them is social media. Social media exposes us to a kind of virtual Panopticon where ‘the few’ watch ‘the many’ in architecture of surveillance. Another term related to surveillance is Synopticon, a system where ‘the many’ watch ‘the few’ in the “Viewer Society”. In the light of the related literature of theory and practice in the area, the study aims at viewing social media tools and its users from a critical perspective in a descriptive manner. To be able to do this, the study develops a set of hypothetical questions whose answers are instrumented to find out whether there is truly such a thing as “Virtual Panopticon” or “Synopticon” and if so, to what extent and how the Panoptic versus Synoptic effect of social media are felt among its users in various applications in light of media and communication. Facebook, based on the current theoretical knowledge within the field of surveillance can be given as an example. The study concludes with an overview of both assumptions with further reflections and contemplations of the readers of the study, who implicitly or explicitly could also be the actors of social media as masters or captives.

Pojam identiteta i njegov odnos prema društvenom poretku u knjigama za samopomoć

Pojam identiteta i njegov odnos prema društvenom poretku u knjigama za samopomoć

Author(s): Iva Žurić Jakovina,Trpimir Jakovina / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 3/2016

This paper focuses on an underresearched topic of the notion of identity and its relation to social order in self-help books. First, the theoretical backgrounds assumed to have influenced the notion of identity in self-help books were analysed. Identity as represented in self-help books can be changed, improved, discovered, strengthened and achieved. It is deficient, and self-help books attempt to compensate for that lack through the processes of self-realisation referred to as “tools for achieving happiness”. Along with the relationship between self-help books and identity at the individual level, another specific topic of the paper is the relation of identity in self-help book to society and social order. Sociological and cultural-critical approach was used to analyse possible contribution that self-help books might make to social change. More specifically, it was analysed whether identity advocated in self-help books can empower individuals for active social participation. Two dominant perspectives in cultural, critical and sociological analyses of self-help books were used to that aim. One claims that striving for individual happiness promoted in self-help books is only maintaining the status quo, while the other one suggests that self-help books can act as catalysts of social change. That is explained by the notion that change at the individual level leads to change in the broader social space. The authors concluded that identities are constantly in the process of transformation, which allows a simultaneous existence of subordination to social order and resistance to it.

Inefficiency indicators in educational organization

Inefficiency indicators in educational organization

Author(s): Süleyman Göksoy / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 33/2017

Determining the inefficiency criteria is regarded as an important problem in the efficiency of the institutions. Therefore, defining the deficiencies and mistakes of the organization as efficiency indicators is considered easier than defining the strengths as efficiency indicators. This model handles the organization in negative aspects and the institution that does not possess any inefficiency indicator is regarded as effective. The primary indicators of inefficiency are organizational conflicts, problems, difficulties, mistakes and low performance (Sisman, 2011). The current research aims to reveal the educational problems that have been experienced in educational organizations throughout history in the framework of organizational inefficiency model and to present suggestions to reduce them. Case study from qualitative research methods was conducted. Interview method was carried out in the collection of data. The data were analyzed with content analysis techniques. Criterion sampling from purposeful sampling methods was used in determining the study group of the research. The study group consists of 9 educators (principals (4), deputy principals (3), and teachers (2)) who participated voluntarily. The following results were obtained in the research. The main problems in educational system were expressed as teachers’ professional development and in-service training, problems in appointment, problems in the career stages, problems in teachers’ being employed, redundant number of teacher candidates, teacher incompetence, conflicts between school management and teachers and incompetence of school counselors.

Bieżące dyskusje na temat różnorodnych barier biologicznych, kulturowych i psychospołecznych wobec karmienia piersią w społeczeństwie współczesnym

Author(s): Elizabeth Ping / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2014

Breastfeeding provides good-quality nutrition for babies and can be very beneficial for both mom and baby. However, modern women face many challenges in breastfeeding their babies that can be attributed to today’s ever-evolving cultural and psycho-social underpinnings. These multiple barriers to breastfeeding in today’s society hinder women from developing a good breastfeeding relationship with their babies. The various factors that prohibit initiation and prolonged breastfeeding however can be counteracted by examining the barriers to breastfeeding and finding reasonable methods for resolving the challenges. Twenty-first century women who desire to breastfeed can be successful at achieving their breastfeeding goals with greater support by society and by having more confidence in themselves.

Infantylizm semantyczny w dyskursach publicznych

Infantylizm semantyczny w dyskursach publicznych

Author(s): Aleksander Kiklewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4 (224)/2015

The author considers the processes of public communication, in particular of media communication, in the light of categories of semiotics and social psychology. The center of attention is the phenomenon of pragmatics without semantics, i.e. dependence of the communication activities on the purpose of the persuasive influence and devaluation of the semantic information. Semantic infantilism is treated as a marginalization (both by the sender and the recipient) of the semantic information under the influence of the pragmatic factors, especially under the influence of the persuasive purpose. Among symptoms of semantic infantilism are: greater or lesser undecidability of the meaning of expression, lack of proper control over the semantic information, deconstruction of the expression, i.e. distortion of its forms and structure. The author focuses in this article on the different types of semantic infantilism in the public discourses, namely, such as: 1) the semantic undecidability; 2) tunnel vision (particularly naive realism); 3) ontological/epistemic unrepresentativeness; 4) lack of semantic consistency; 5) redundancy and semantic satiation.

Being at home: Global citizenship in Norwegian schools. A study of children’s poems

Being at home: Global citizenship in Norwegian schools. A study of children’s poems

Author(s): Susan Erdmann / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

The paper addresses the question of self-perceived identity in children attending international schools in Norway. In this population, the distinction between “home culture” and “host culture” is no longer relevant, since most of the children represent “hyphenated” (e.g. Asian-British or American-Scandinavian) or merged nationalities and cultures. The goal of the study is to investigate how these pupils define themselves and the notion of “home”. To achieve at least a preliminary picture of the children’s self-perception, the authors have analysed poems on two topics: Me and Home, written by pupils of an international school and a Norwegian school, both informant groups aged 11-13. A semantic analysis of the poems indicates that the international school children present strong assertions of individual identity as defined against societal roles, while the Norwegian school pupils do not conceptualize identity formation as a struggle and their poems reflect a high degree of social, familial and national integration.

Samoocena i jej komponenty a satysfakcja z życia seksualnego

Author(s): Szymon Kucharski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2017

The aim of this research was to study the relationship between the self-esteem level and the satisfaction with sexual life. The study was conducted on 60 participants (30 women and 30 men) aged from 22 to 53. Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory Questionnaire (MSEI), Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire and an original questionnaire were used. In case of women, a moderately strong and negative correlation between the vitality component of the scale and sexual life satisfaction was indicated – the bigger the vitality, the lower the sexual life satisfaction was. Among men, a moderately strong and positive correlations were observed between five components of the self-esteem scale (competence, sense of being loved, popularity, physical attractiveness, vitality) and sense of satisfaction with sexual life. The higher the component level, the higher the sense of satisfaction was. A difference in sexual satisfaction between sexes was noted: men had higher levels of the sexual life satisfaction. A correlation between the relationship duration and satisfaction with sexual life was confirmed in women – the longer the relationship was, the bigger the satisfaction. This dependence was not confirmed in male participants.

Author(s): Onur Alp Kayabaşı / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 86/2016

Myths which are sacred or admitted as sacred for humans arise from the needs of people. The end of the universe, World and humans is as important part of the myths as the creation of these. “Beşik-Eşik-Keşik” Ya Da Sivas Sözel Kültüründe Ölüm

Author(s): Nesrin T. Karaca,Müjgân Üçer / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 85/2016

A manifold of studies in various disciplines have been carried out upon the concept of death, which is the inevitable and mutual fate of all living beings. It can be said that the historical trajectory of studies that seek to understand and explain the psychological reality of death is quite new, even though the phenomenon frequently concerned different fields such as religion, philosophy, art, literature, medicine, biology and law. It is observed that psychological studies concerning death started to attract Western psychologists with the beginning of 20th century, and these studies (thanatology researches) gained momentum since then, getting even more intense by mid-1950s Regardless of the level of development and together with the verbal culture, all societies bear a certain oral culture that is inevitably significant for socio-cultural integration, in the sense that “in the oral culture, the ground of knowledge is human memory”, offering an undeniable prosperity. The concept of death prevails quite commonly in the traditional oral culture of Anatolia as well, with its temporal aspects such as the before, the after and the moment of death. Having a connection with religion and faith, this commonality should also be thought of in relation to further cultural aspects such as respect for the dead, the attitude towards the event of death and the rich cultural history behind. This study will be concerned with unraveling the concept of death within the context of Sivas and through the elements of oral culture and tradition, together with its resonation in faith, social life and societal behavior.

ATTITUDES TO FUNCTIONAL MARKS

ATTITUDES TO FUNCTIONAL MARKS

Author(s): Jaroslav Ďaďo,Nina Slezáková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/1/2016

Except marks whose English synonym is brand names, which are placed on product packages, there are also marks whose meaning is different. These are functional marks that identify package or product attribute or indicate other information relating to the product and should be useful for the consumer. Producer has to place some functional marks on the product mandatorily, others are optional. The aim of the research was to identify the frequency of functional marks on a sample of confectionery products by content analysis. Then we identified the importance of general factors influencing the choice of products by a group of respondents. On this basis, we made a test of knowledge of functional marks’ meaning. This test was the basis for analysis of functional marks’ impact on product selection and the degree of consumer confidence in selected functional marks. The research results showed that the number of functional marks on packages is growing. Their placement on the package represents a way of differentiating the product from competitors, giving product an added value and gaining a competitive advantage for producer and retailer. On the market we can also find a lot of different functional marks which are unknown to people and they do not understand their importance.

THE BRAND VALUE IN THE PROCESS OF SHOPPING PLACE SELECTION

THE BRAND VALUE IN THE PROCESS OF SHOPPING PLACE SELECTION

Author(s): Tomáš Fašiang / Language(s): English Issue: 1/1/2016

The contemporary marketing trend is increasingly pointing to the matter how the brand value is perceived through the customer´s eyes. There is a search for mutual dependability measuring the scale of customer´s satisfaction in relation to his loyalty and desired effect of repetitive purchase. We can interpret this relationship on dependency principle – if the scale of satisfaction is increasing, the perceived brand value and income is growing as well. In connection with retail we can consider as the key element in stated dependency the shopping place selection. This article is describing the consumer shopping decision in phase of shopping place selection. In this process the key role is retailaction radius and perceiving of its attributes. The other point brought by this article is to outline the probability of shopping place selection in connection with brand value perceiving and action radius impacting of competitor´s retails.

Author(s): Alena Hrušková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/1/2016

With the expanding media offer caused mainly by technical development, the structure of our experience with the media is also changing. The medial experience often prevail over the own experience. The media can show standards, values and acceptable patterns of behaviour that help young people to socialize and to participate in the specific society. We will examine this power of media considering the impact of mass media advertising on the purchase behaviour of young people who are increasing their education at one of the universities in Slovakia. Using the questionnaire survey we bring the opinions, interests and lifestyle of generation Y. This generation represents the interesting target group for many companies.

Zaman ve anlati ekseninde bellek ve mübadele

Author(s): Şebnem Pala Güzel / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 60/2009

The main impetus of this paper is to tackle the problem of how scapes of the compulsory population exchange fall within the topology of individual cultural memory. A repository of material, memories of the individuals belonging to different generations, was compiled during a field work in (...) Kayseri, in August 2007. With respect to its inherent potential for models of individual representation and signification and their reflections in the memory, Riclur's trajectory of tripartite explanation of nimesis is adopted here for construing the narrative of Habibe Yilmaz, one of the first generation of exchangees, mubadils. In population exchange and memory matrix, Yilmaz's narrative and its peculiar narrative structure represents a crystallization of „a realm of memory“ of a traumatic past experience.

Forster'in Kadinlari: Howards End, A Room with a View ve Where Angels Fear to Tread

Author(s): Özlem Görümlü / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 60/2009

In 1901, during his fourth and final year at Cambridge University, the Cambridge Conversazione Society, in formally known as „The Apostles“, elected into the membership. The Apostoles under the direction of G. E. Moore, where is specially renowned for their lively discussions about humanism. First, Moore emphasizes close personal relationships between individuals, regardless of their respective economic or social classes. Second Moore argues that love should be "the aim of life". He asserts that awareness of struggle bonds connecting individuals with lead to future reconciliation between members of different genders and social classes. These ideas of the Apostols were later adopted by the Bloomsbury Group. Bloomsbury held personal relations to be the highest good relations between people who were equal yet unique, regardless of gender. Bloomsbury believed in the value of individual attempts to lead a good moral life. Yet Forster main things that personal relations were often concealed by hierarchic social system, such as the one established in Edwardian England. Thus, Forster's novels are essentially concerned with personal conflicts, arriving from the challenging or questioning of a set of established social values, usually values associated with the English middle class in its attitude towards it's supposed social inferiors. Women of the upper middle class for instance where to act submissively the word man and devoted themselves to their families, while men of the same economic class were to idealize women. So the objective of this article is to examine the struggle of the women characters in his novels. In a room with a view, Lucy's mature ration into a person who comes to rely upon her own instincts rather than what society dictates as morally correct can particularly be observed. In Where Angels Fear to Trad, Lilia and Caroline have been suppressed to represent the features of the ideal women who do conform to social expectations rather than express the desire or aspirations of their own in ceder to be recognized as real identities.
