Въвеждането на геометрична вероятност в ХI клас

Author(s): Borislav Lazarov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

The paper presents some ideas for linking the model of classical probability with the geometrical probability, which are potentially helpful in operationalizing the correspondent topics from the Bulgarian math curriculum for the 11th grade. The point is to partition a continuum sample space into large numbers of disjoint events. Such partitioning allows interpreting a particular geometrical figure as a finite set of disjoint equal parts. In such manner, the corresponding stochastic phenomenon is considered as a finite composition of equiprobable outcomes. The benefits of this approach consist of the better didactical motivation when introducing the new concept of geometrical probability. Some comments on the philosophical correspondence between continuum and discrete structure are discussed. The examples are taken from the competition papers of Chernorizec Hrabar Math Tournament.

Студентски нагласи относно планирането на персонално електронно портфолио

Author(s): Galina Georgieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

Creating personal electronic portfolio requires that the author knows very well its significant personal characteristics and acquisitions as well as the requirements of the electronic portfolio’s online audiences. This paper attempts to present data analysis about important aspects of the personal electronic portfolio planning. The students’ attitudes towards these different aspects may reveal some important perspectives for improving the process of planning. In the paper is presented the opinion of 46 students from the Faculty of Education of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The majority of the participants admit the advantages of having electronic portfolio samples in support of the process of creating their own electronic portfolio. According to the students’ opinion it is very usefully if the tutor provides appropriate examples of electronic portfolio’s goals. Shown are some difficulties for creating an electronic portfolio, based on its online audiences’ requirements. In the process of electronic portfolio planning the tutor and the future employers’ requirements are seen as most significant requirements.

The Free School of Robin Goodfellow is a pedagogical initiative launched in 2014, the aim of which is to present an alternative – theoretical as well as practical – to the existing system of education. Since its foundation, the free school has been seeking to be a pioneer in the area of education, trying to put into practice the principles of an anti-authoritarian and communitarian education on the basis of a radical critique of society, supporting a revolutionary transformation of social relations. The authors of this essay have been among the founders of the free school, who summarize the key thoughts of their lectures and papers presented and published during the last several years. They also describe the programs organized by the free school, which range from shadow-plays to the modelling of processes that form the surface of the Earth. They also reflect on the difficulties – both objective and subjective – which have hindered the development of their pedagogical attempt, and hope to provide help for all those who are dissatisfied with the present educational system, while being open to a radical critique of capitalism and ready to act for a change.

Generation of NO2 by Lead Nitrate Pyrolysis: Never do Modifications a Prima Vista

Author(s): Vlsdimir M. Petrusevski / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

Generation of nitrogen dioxide is a well-known demonstration/experiment, usually performed by pyrolysis of Pb(NO3)2. In order to prevent obstructing the glass tubes or the test-tube where NO2 is generated, one may safely use a homogenized mixture of lead(II) nitrate and dry sand. Aesthetically it is not quite appealing, so during the same lesson a colleague experimenter decided to change the standard approach and to use table salt (sodium chloride) instead of sand. However, the result of the experiment turned to be a flaw! This appears to be one more proof for the correctness of the general experimenter’s philosophy: never improvise if you do not know the outcome.

Computational analysis of the messenger RNA variants encoding two isoforms of the high-mobility group box 1 protein

Author(s): Luchezar Karagyozov,Jordana Todorova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) is a multifunctional nonhistone chromosomal protein. This widespread nuclear protein has a dual function-in the nucleus - it binds DNA and participates in practically all DNA-dependent processes. On the other hand, the protein plays an important role in the extracellular matrix as an “alarmin”, which interacts with certain receptors and stimulates biochemical pathways, associated with carcinogenesis and metastasis. HMGB1 is a critical damage-associated molecular pattern molecule, has been implicated in several inflammatory diseases and cancer types. This universality makes it an attractive target for innovative therapeutic strategies in the treatment of various diseases. The updated database for the HMGB1 gene, encoding the high-mobility group box 1 protein, was used for computational analysis of the annotated mRNA splice variants. Results showed that five of the splice variants encode an HMGB1 protein, containing 215 amino acid residues. However, two of the splice variants encode a shorter HMGB1 protein with 158 residues. Presently, the existence of a shorter HMGB1 protein is not registered in the protein databanks. This inconsistency is not yet resolved.

Professional Dispositions of Graduate Pre-service Mathematics Teachers among Three College of Teacher Education in Ethiopia

Author(s): Anteneh Tefera,Mulugeta Atnafu,Michael Kassa / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

The general objective of this study was to examine the professional disposition (attitude and self-efficacy) of pre-service teachers hold at the end of teacher education programs in terms of gender and modality. To do this, we used a quantitative research approach. The source of data was 3rd-year mathematics pre-service teachers who have graduated in the 2018/19 academic year. The study used self-reported questionnaires. Thus, 536 (309 male and 227 female) third-year pre-service mathematics teachers from the three sampled institutions (Kotebe metropolitan university, Hawassa college of teacher education, and Arba Minch college of teacher education) and trained under three modalities (generalist, specialist, or linear) have participated. The result showed that the ongoing teacher education program helps them to have a strong attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and mathematics teaching without gender difference. However, variations were observed in attitudes and self-efficacy across modalities. In general, it can be concluded that the teacher education program helps pre-service mathematics teachers to develop a strong attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and teaching mathematics. Therefore, it is recommended that further qualitative and detailed analysis should be conducted in order to find which part of the education system or educational inputs help pre-service mathematics teachers in colleges of teacher education to develop positive attitude and self-efficacy towards mathematics and teaching mathematics and should be shared to other universities and colleges.

This is the problem of the 8th International Experimental Physics Olympiad (EPO8). The task of the EPO8 is to determine Planck constant ħ=h/2pi using the given set-up with LED. If you have an idea how to do it, do it and send us the result; skip the reading of the detailed step by step instructions with increasing difficulties. We expect the participants to follow the suggested items – they are instructive for physics education in general. Only the reading of historical remarks given in the first section can be omitted during the Olympiad without loss of generality. Participants should try solving as much tasks as they can without paying attention to the age categories: give your best.
