Явление калькирования в польском говоре жителей деревни Веpшина в Сибири

Author(s): Emilia Doroszko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

Vershina is a Polish village in Siberia inhabited by Polish settlers who moved there of their own volition. The migration was a result of attempt of improving the economic standards of their living. As they reach the territory of the Russian nation, Polish settlers started the process of gradual language assimilation. As a result, they create a unique Polish dialect that is used up to nowadays. Polish dialect contains linguistic calques, borrowings, hybrids and more examples of linguistic interference. The article presents the topic of linguistic calques, grouping them into five groups (structural, semantic, phraseological, morphological and syntactical) and gives examples of each of the group. It shows how big is the influence of the Russian language on the Polish dialect.

Коннектор раз… то и модели его перевода на французский язык: между условием, причиной и следствием

Author(s): Vitaliy Nuriev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2017

The paper takes a closer look at the semantics of the Russian two-place connective raz… to [if; once; since]. This connective is commonly thought to be a mere variant of the conjunction raz, with the same meanings assigned to it. We attempt to show that the main difference between the two connectives lies in the semantic charge of the element to as it serves to emphasize the implicative relation conveyed by raz. To that end, we employ a contrastive approach and use data from Russian and French. For this pair of languages, raz… to is found to be language-specific.

Family Beyond Borders

Family Beyond Borders

Author(s): Aleksandra S. Aleksandrova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The paper studies the way Lakoff’s STATE IS A PERSON metaphor and Mussolf’s family scenario are exploited in British and Bulgarian media texts. The models that are studied include marriage partners/ divorce, children-parents relations, misbehaving children, good children, poor relatives and stepmothers. The type of family relation used for presenting certain situation can change with a change in the political environment – for instance, a country can be presented as a marriage partner in one text, as a divorcee in another and as a (disobedient) child in a third text.

Crossing Borders On The Balkan Route: Representation Of Migration In Online News

Crossing Borders On The Balkan Route: Representation Of Migration In Online News

Author(s): Svetlana Nedelcheva / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

This research studies the headlines representing migrants along the Balkan route in Bulgarian online news during the “migrant crisis” of 2015/2016, as well as the pictorial images that immediately follow the headlines. It compares the verbal and the visual representation of migrants and applies both critical discourse analysis and multimodal analysis. The study uses the term ‘text’ in a wider sense including both the verbal text and the pictorial display of migrants’ social activities. The headlines develop two contradicting images of the migrants which are also reflected in the pictures. One of them is the image of poor and distressed people running away from the war in their home country. Europe for them is the Promised Land and they are presented with sympathy and compassion. The other image of the migrants is that of a natural disaster which cannot be stopped by country borders and threatens the stability on the continent.

Author(s): Cvetanka Yanakieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 13/2013

The article discusses the choice between genitive forms without prepositions and prepositional genitives with „отъ” denoting the object in the verbs “be afraid/ scared of” with ablative relations between the object and the subject found in the Old-Bulgarian Psalter of Sinai, and the Middle-Bulgarian Psalter of Bologna and Tomic Psalter. An attempt is made to define some normative prerequisites as well as some formal semantic factors for their use in the Slavonic tradition of Psalter as compared to the Greek Protograph. The author suggests a new interpretation of a group of prepositional phrases with „отъ” in the verbs of the Old-Bulgarian Codek Suprasliensis and the Manasi Chronicle, which are traditionally viewed as exceptions.

IMPORTANCE OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES (AN EXAMPLE OF ROMANCE VARIETIES)

IMPORTANCE OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES (AN EXAMPLE OF ROMANCE VARIETIES)

Author(s): Aleksandra Banjević / Language(s): English Issue: 25/2018

Language contacts can be studied in three directions: language acquisition; b) language borrowing; c) translation. In this project allthe three directions are investigated. The process of language borrowing is analysed on four levels: phonological, morphological, semantic, and syntactic. The adaptation of a model (a foreign word) shows two kinds of changes, primary and secondary changes, which take place on all four levels. The adaptation on the quoted levels is carried out according to the three types of transphonemization (zero, compromise and free) and according to the degree of the change of meaning on the semantic level.

Idioms with the Lexemes MOUTH in English and USTA in Serbian: A Cognitive Approach

Idioms with the Lexemes MOUTH in English and USTA in Serbian: A Cognitive Approach

Author(s): Jelena Lj. Biljetina / Language(s): English Issue: 18/2018

This paper explores the idioms in the English and Serbian language, which contain the lexemes mouth and usta. The idioms are analysed from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, with the main aim of finding the cognitive mechanisms that underlie these idioms and make it possible to understand them. The idioms are grouped according to the concepts they express and are compared and contrasted in order to find similarities and differences among the idioms in the two languages. The analysis results show that there are not many similarities in the way the idioms are lexicalised in English and Serbian, but that there is significant overlapping in their conceptualisation, which leads to the conclusion that these two languages share universality in conceptualising the world around us.

Osobliwości idiolektu przedstawiciela średniego pokolenia staroobrzędowców regionu suwalsko-augustowskiego

Author(s): Magdalena Grupa / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2017

The Old Believers appeared on the territory of contemporary Poland in the second half of the 18th century. Back then they lived in isolation, therefore in the 20th century the intensification of contacts with Polish linguistic-cultural surroundings occurred. Assimilative processes sped up after the World War II. A little bit later differences in the speech of individual generations started to develop, which became very clear in the 21st century. Competence of the younger generations in the Russian dialect is more and more limited, the youngest community representatives are displaying tendencies of the linguistic change. The informer M-1977, whose idiolect has been the subject of analysis, is the representative of the youngest members of middle-age generation. The informer uses the Russian local dialect and Polish language on the level of the elaborated code and because of the preserved dialectal features, stylistic richness and the productivity in borrowing the lexis and the phraseology, he may be considered as an outstanding personality in his community.

THE IMPACT OF ENGLISH ON CUBAN SPANISH: A GLOSSARY-BASED ANALYSIS OF

THE IMPACT OF ENGLISH ON CUBAN SPANISH: A GLOSSARY-BASED ANALYSIS OF MORPHOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS (PART 1)

Author(s): José Antonio Sánchez Fajardo / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This article is intended to explore the linguistic means of anglicization in Cuban Spanish. Thus, a corpus-driven database or glossary of this variant of Spanish has been elaborated to examine these English-induced units quantitatively and qualitatively, entailing a morpho-syntactic and semantic analysis of the anglicization process. This research study is based on two major stages: data collection and data processing of the lemmas compiled. The resulting glossary is used in this part of the study to unravel the morphological and syntactic features of the English-induced units, in particular those of gender and number. A compilation of these Cuban-Spanish units allows for a better understanding of morphological changes and lexical creativity, in keeping with the historical socioeconomic conditions of the island.
