Combating unemployment of older people – in searching for a paradigm

Przeciwdziałanie bezrobociu wśród osób starszych. W poszukiwaniu modelu

Author(s): Magdalena Paluszkiewicz,Tatiana Wrocławska,Mirosław Włodarczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: older people; unemployment; retirement; discrimination; legal measures supporting employment

This publication constitutes the final report of the research carried out in the years 2014-2017 within the framework of a research project financed by the National Science Centre grant “W poszukiwaniu modelu przeciwdziałania bezrobociu wśród osób starszych – analiza prawna”, UMO-2013/09/09/B/HS5/04137. The main goal of the research project was an attempt to present a model set of initiatives and legal measures that should be taken in order to reduce the phenomenon of unemployment among the elderly. These investigations were to be based, and this was the case, on the examination of the legal regulations of selected European countries. The relevant regulations of Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary were finally subjected to the research process. Polish legal solutions were also the subject of the research process. The scope of the study encompassed legal institutions which were used in a given country to reduce or eliminate unemployment among the elderly; where it was justified, general regulations concerning unemployment reduction were presented.

The Bulgarian State in 927–969. The Epoch of Tsar Peter I

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: Bulgarian State; Tsar Peter I; Symeon I the Great; Lekapene Maria; Byzantine-Bulgarian Armed Conflicts; Bulgarian Church

Tsar Peter (927-969), the book’s protagonist, is all too frequently presented in modern scholarship as a weak ruler, devoid of any grander political aspirations, focused on religious matters, indeed – pious, but neglecting the vital interests of his subjects. It was said that during his reign both his court and state became Byzantinised, that the central authority was completely helpless in the face of Hungarian raids, and saw the spread of the Bogomilist heresy. According to the Tsar’s critics, it was as a result of his ineffectual rule that Boris II, his son and successor, was unable to defend Bulgaria’s sovereignty in 971.This book – the first monograph in world literature devoted to Peter - was written by Bulgarian (Miliana Kaymakamova, Georgi N. Nikolov, Angel Nikolov, Nikolay Hrissimov) and Polish medievalists (Miroslaw J. Leszka, Kirił Marinow, Zofia A. Brzozowska Jan M. Wolski). Thanks to a thorough analysis of the sources and an in-depth knowledge of the literature of the subject, they constructed a comprehensive and balanced image of the reign of their protagonist, and of the role he played in the history of mediaeval Bulgaria.

Participatory Social Work: Research, Practice, Education

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: participatory social work; social workers; live in poverty; homelessness; Romanian Roma immigrants; social justice; street workers; social work students; PAR

Participatory social work raises anew the issues of credibility of knowledge, processes of its creation and use, the purpose of social work, and its relationship to politics. It has given the impetus to the emergence of participatory research teams or, in the more radical viewpoints, to the gradual de-academization of both the empirical and theoretical aspects of social work.In this book we focus on raising controversial issues to encourage debate, reflection and discussion concerning participatory social work with a special attention given to participatory research. As a collective monograph prepared by an international team of researchers, it should help social workers, social pedagogues, politicians, sociologists, policy makers, social activists, etc. from different geographic and socio-cultural contexts to develop critical reflection on implications and consequences of doing their research, practice and teaching in participatory ways.“The book is the result of a longer discussion about Participatory Action Research (PAR) in different contexts. This book focuses on methodological and practical experiences of PAR in a more radical perspective. Not only opportunities but also pitfalls and challenges are worked out.”Prof. Dr. Gunther Graßhoff (the book reviewer)

Starość w nurcie życia

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The reflections contained in the volume fall between the two shores of the stream of life: the socio-cultural and the individual experiencing of old age. The book’s target audience are educators, sociologists, psychologists, students and doctoral students dealing with gerontological issues, as well as representatives of institutions supporting seniors.

The Entrepreneurs’ Quality of Life. Between Prosperity and Well-Being

Jakość życia przedsiębiorców. Między dobrobytem a dobrostanem

Author(s): Katarzyna Biegańska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: financial success; life satisfaction; entrepreneurship; quality of life; business activity; well-being; prosperity

The author has extended her research on entrepreneurship to the well-being and health of business people. She proves that determinants of success depend not only on the economy of actions, but also on the psychological aspect of experiencing quality of life. In this context, Biegańska combines economics with psychology, bringing her work in line with the current research trend called behavioral economics. The publication indicates differences between entrepreneurs and other occupational groups in terms of quality of life. It also contains an analysis of the internal structure of quality of life and discusses the intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of entrepreneurs’ prosperity and well-being. So far, no other research on the quality of life of entrepreneurs in Poland has included such a wide range of explanatory variables. An important merit of the monograph by Katarzyna Biegańska is that it shows the psychological mechanism of reaching a particular level of well-being, while pointing out its causative elements. This is important because the research concept applied by the author and the results she obtained provide specific tools for monitoring quality of life and possibly prevent its excessive decline, which is not uncommon for entrepreneurs. Methodological critique in the practice of knowledge creation

Krytyka metodologiczna w praktyce tworzenia wiedzy

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: creation; konwledge

W przypadku dyscyplin wiedzy traktujących o wychowaniu – kształtowaniu ludzkiej praktyki – przeczuwane i dostrzegane wątpliwości miały i nadal mają szczególnie istotne znaczenie.

Łódź and Łódź Residents in the Context of the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920

Łódź i łodzianie wobec wojny polsko-bolszewickiej 1920 roku

Author(s): Tomasz Matuszak,Przemysław Waingertner,Witold Jarno,Maciej Hubka,Jarosław Olbrychowski,Agnieszka Jędrzejewska,Leszek Olejnik,Krzysztof Lesiakowski,Maciej Tadeusz Mańkowski,Konrad A. Czernielewski,Bartosz Górecki / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: The Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921);The History of Poland of the 20th Century; The History of Łódź of the 20th Century

The book contains texts of well-known historians, museologists and archivists of Łódź, who aimed at presenting the impact of the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921) on the functioning of Łódź and its inhabitants as well as the participation of Łódź residents in this armed conflict. The authors present the role of the city as an administrative center and a center of socio-political, cultural and military life. They picture the activities of the Łódź community as well as the local political, intellectual and economic elites, confronted with the war with Bolshevik Russia. The authors draw expressive portraits of the Łódź politicians and social activists. At the same time, they are looking for traces of this dramatic period in the modern image of the city, its museums, archives and at the great necropolises of Łódź. They ask questions about the place of 1920 in the collective memory of generations of Łódź residents.

Prosody as a component of sense

Prozodia jako składnik sensu

Author(s): Anita Grzegorzewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: prosody; compositing the sense; communicativism; auditory analysis

The researching of the mechanisms that rule the sense composing, in process of receiving the communique, is still of interest to researchers – Aleksy Awdiejew and Grażyna Habrajska – the creators of Polish communicativism theory. However, there were no deliberations dedicated to prosody. The purpose of presented publication is to refill this vacancy.Author, referring to the theoretical basics of commucativism, researches the process of communicating the sense, using suprasegmental elements of speech (stress and intonation) and segmental elements (pause). She offers an auditory analysis of material extracted from 16 different audiobooks of literature classics. The proprietary system of prosodic elements’ notation allows to observe and to record the acoustic value of the communiques. Using this system isn’t a purpose itself – it’s used for professional analysis of a prosodic frame. Communicative approach of the prosody contributed to initiate a new field of study: prosody pragmatics. According to this, author describes prosody that: 1) does not interfere with interactive power of communique (prosody read); 2) can sensitize, weaken or modify this power (prosody derived or interpreted). She extracts and classifies all prosody’s characteristics within the groups of interactive operators they create; she recreates the process of supporting the sense’s composing using prosody, by comparing primary (by author of the text) and secondary (by actor reading the text) prosodic interpretation of the text. She also designates the classes of phenomena, within recipients can build some area of meaning in their own imagination.

In Search of Identity in the Country of (Non)Remembrance. Ruth Beckermann’s Documentary Films

Poszukiwanie tożsamości w kraju (nie)pamięci. O dokumentalnej twórczości Ruth Beckermann

Author(s): Olga Wesołowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Austrian cinema; contemporary cinema; Jews; documentary film

Ruth Beckermann is an Austrian-Jewish filmmaker, born in Vienna as a daughter of Holocaust survivors. She can be seen as so-called Nestbeschmutzer (German world for someone who fouls their own nest). This term in Austria refers to artists who are not afraid to criticize their own country, who dare to deconstruct Austrian myths and come up with taboo topics. This is exactly what Beckermann does in many of her works. Not only in her movies but also in books, essays, and artistic installations. Nevertheless, Beckermann should not only be considered as a Nestbeschmutzer, since many of her works actually are a form of self-reflection about Jewish identity in the country which presents itself as a first victim of Hitler. This book focuses on Beckermann as a filmmaker. The analysis of her documentaries shows how she portrays Austria and Austrians. For the film analysis, the cultural, historical, and political context appears significant. The references to different aspects of cultural studies, especially memory studies or postcolonial studies, constitute the methodological background for this book.

Reinhardt, Schlemmer & others. Studies and sketches on German-language drama and theatre

Reinhardt, Schlemmer i inni. Studia i szkice o dramacie i teatrze niemieckojęzycznym

Author(s): Małgorzata Leyko / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: German Theatre; Max Reinhardt; Oskar Schlemmer; Friedrich Wolf; Erwin Piscator; Bertolt Brecht; Austrian drama; Gert Jonke; Peter Turrini; Johann Nestroy

The book consists of fifteen studies and sketches written over the past two decades and devoted to the twentieth century German theatre and Austrian drama. The publication consists of three parts. The first includes sketches on Max Reinhardt's theatre – his mass theatre against the backdrop of the spectacle festive culture in Germany in the 19th-20th centuries, the organization of the theatre companies he owned, and the director's strategies used in Shakespearean productions. In addition, there is a sketch on the Polish reception of Reinhardt's theatre and an article on Pola Negri's roles in the pantomime and the film “Sumurun”. The second block consists of texts on the work of Oskar Schlemmer – his stage explorations, the idea of the new man present in his works and thought, and on contemporary reconstructions of his works. The third block consists of articles on the medium of film in the theatre of Erwin Piscator, two dissertations on the dramaturgy of Friedrich Wolf, a sketch tracking the emigration history of Reinhardt, Piscator and Brecht, and an analysis of the post-war reception of Brecht's plays in Poland. The next texts discuss more recent works – Pina Bausch's dance theatre performance and the dramas by Gert Jonke and Peter Turrini. With reference to one of Turrini's plays discussed, the book closes with an analysis of Johann Nestroy's local farce “On the Ground and First Floors”. All of the studies and sketches included here have previously been published in journals or collective volumes, but when put together they show one important aspect of the author's research interests.

Developing Sustainable, Smart and Resilient Urban Transportation Systems - Residents' Perspective

Rozwój zrównoważonych, inteligentnych i odpornych miejskich systemów transportowych – perspektywa mieszkańców

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: sustainable transportation system; urban logistics; public transportation; city; sustainability challenges

Contemporary urban transport policy aims to shape sustainable, intelligent, and resilient transportation systems. Simultaneously, the ubiquitous dominance of personal vehicles as a means of mobility leads to numerous negative consequences such as traffic congestion and air pollution. Municipal authorities must confront these consequences while satisfying the needs of city users in terms of accessibility, reliability, and transportation safety. The main goal of the book is to diagnose the challenges facing modern urban transport policy, identify how transport users perceive these challenges, and explore the corresponding solutions implemented within urban transportation systems. The book consists of 7 chapters, each analyzing the following issues sequentially: traffic congestion; the quality of local public transportation services; determinants of using commuter rail; integration of rail and bicycle transportation in urban areas; implementation of intelligent transportation systems in cities; shared mobility in urban transportation systems; and the development of electromobility. All chapters present the results of research conducted among users of urban transportation systems. This has enabled interesting conclusions to be drawn, ultimately making the book an engaging source of knowledge for local government practitioners, students, and researchers interested in the issues of sustainable urban logistics.

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: ludicity; glottodidactic; didactic; Polish as a foreign language; activating teaching methods

South Korean nationalism – the category of the Other in creation of national film narratives

Południowokoreański nacjonalizm – kategoria Innego w budowaniu filmowych narracji narodowych

Author(s): Joanna Beczkowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: South Korea; Japan; North Korea; nationalism; national identity; film

This study focuses on the role of the "Other" in shaping nationalism and national identity through a case study of South Korea and its relations with North Korea and Japan. The main goal is to identify, characterise and analyse the different roles assigned to neighbouring countries in the process of constructing South Korean national identity. The research focused on film narratives, which have a significant impact on shaping collective memory and national identity and constitute an important political and ideological tool. In South Korea, policy is shaped not only by rational factors but also in relation to two "Significant Others" - Japan and North Korea. In such a situation, emotional factors play a role in decision-making. Moreover, having two “Significant Others” and two identities – Korean and South Korean – complicates international relations. With Korean identity, South Korea should strive for unification with the DPRK while at the same time feeling the need to come to terms with the colonial period, which generates conflict with Japan. However, for the South Korean identity, the greatest threat is North Korea - also in the sense of symbolic legitimisation of Korean power and representation. This identity requires striving for domination over the DPRK and encourages cooperation with Japan based on shared values. Having two identities defined in relation to two different "enemies" means that the ROK's policy towards Japan and North Korea changes frequently. Identifying and characterising the roles that these states play as Significant Others in South Korean national narratives becomes a useful tool in analysing South Korea's behaviour in the international arena.

Dance in Performative Research

Taniec w badaniach performatywnych

Author(s): Tomasz Ciesielski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: taniec; badania performatywne; przestrzeń wymiany; fenomenologia; improwizacja solowa; badania w działaniu; zmiany społeczno-ekonomiczne

The monograph Dance in Performative Research by Tomasz Ciesielski explores dance as a central area of performative research, serving both as a subject and a research tool. This publication systematizes contemporary methodologies and research approaches within performative arts, addressing the need for structured development of this discipline in Polish academic discourse. The author emphasizes that dance, as a somatic form of expression, provides unique research opportunities for examining embodiment, spatial relationships, and social dynamics, making it a key element of performative analysis. The monograph reviews and categorizes various research strategies, such as practice-as-research and action research, which emphasize active, participatory methods and direct engagement of both creators and audiences. Through critical analysis, Ciesielski demonstrates how performative research creates innovative frameworks for generating new insights into existing branches of knowledge. These processes are considered within phenomenological and cognitive approaches, which deepen understanding of knowledge transfer from experiential to declarative levels. The structure of the book combines theoretical discussion with empirical case studies, such as a multi-year project examining attention dynamics in contemporary dance theater. These examples illustrate how performative research can offer new perspectives on creative processes while addressing broader socio-cultural challenges. Dance in Performative Research contributes to the advancement of interdisciplinary research and serves as a valuable resource for further exploration of embodied knowledge within performative and artistic practices.

In Search of a Legal Model of Self-Employment in Poland. A Comparative Legal Analysis Part II

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: self-employment; legal model; employment law; social insurance; comparative analysis; legal systems; Poland

This monograph is the result of the work of scholars from various European countries who joined the research project funded by the National Science Centre and led by Tomasz Duraj, titled “In Search of a Legal Model of Self-Employment in Poland. A Comparative Legal Analysis”.The chief research objective tackled by the project participants consisted in a complex legal ana lysis of self-employment – not only from the perspective of Polish regulations and case law, but also with regard to solutions existing in international law, European Union law, and selected European countries. The area of study covered the legal systems of the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, ltaly, Hungary, as well as Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Research design was rather innovative. To date, no large-scale research had been conducted into the legal environment as it pertains to self-employment, encompassing not only the Polish regulations and case law, but also the solutions adopted in international law, European Union law, and the laws of selected European countries. The inclusion of the regulations on self-employment in other countries, processed to fit within in the framework of a structured study, provides added value for Polish legal scholarship. This monograph contains an analysis of self-employment under the law of the Baltic States and under Polish law. The concluding chapter presents the final results of the research carried out as part of the research project. On their basis, an attempt was made to create an optimal legal model of self-employment in Poland. The comments as to the potential future regulatory approaches are designed to help the Polish legislator draft a new law on the legal status of self-employed workers, in order to systematically and comprehensively regulate the key aspects of self-employed work, with particular emphasis on the social protection of the workers. Its implementation will contribute to resolving a number of disputes and clarifying a number of doubts that currently exist in legal scholarship and in case law.The proposed optimal legal model of self-employment in Poland outlined in this monograph has a universal dimension, going much beyond self-employment as such. The research results suggest certain conclusions that offer a springboard for a broader discussion about the future of labour law. They encourage reflection on the need and legitimacy of expanding the applicability of protective regulations of labour law, with a view to bringing under their umbrella various new groups of workers who provide work, independently, outside the employment relationship (in particular under conditions of dependence on the client). The scope of this protection and manner of its differentiation require further critical reflection and development. The monograph is primarily addressed to legal academics, students, legislators, judges and representatives of other legal professions, social partners, practitioners and other circles interested in the issue of atypical forms of employment.

Lombard-Byzantine Political Relations from the Beginning of the 6th Century to the Fall of the Exarchate of Ravenna; Byzantina Lodziensia, No. XLVI

Longobardzko-bizantyńskie relacje polityczne od początków VI wieku do upadku egzarchatu Rawenny; Byzantina Lodziensia, No. XLVI

Author(s): Maciej Dawczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Lombards; Byzantium; Middle Ages; 6th century; 7th century; 8th century

The subject of this study is the political relations between the Byzantine Empire and the Lombards within the period from the beginning of the 6th century to the fall of the Exarchate of Ravenna. Depiction of their image for whole this period is a difficult task. After the Lombard invasion of Italy, the Empire treated the peninsula as peripheral territory prioritizing a fight against the Avars, the Sasanians, and the Arabs. For this reason, intensity of the relations rapidly diminished from the beginning of the 7th century what makes the coherent reconstruction of their image challenging. The reflection of the general Byzantine attitude towards Italy is a scarcity of information about the Lombards in the Greek language sources. Although the western Latin sources are numerous and various (at least to the beginning of the 7th century), they usually show internal Italian perspective. For the later period, the materials are much more scarce, full of gaps, and biased. In the first half of the 6th century, the Lombards settled in Pannonia and became an ally of the Empire. At that time Byzantium used them as the factor necessary to maintain balance of power in the region and to limit the significance of the Gepids. The situation changed after the Lombard invasion of Italy. The Lombards quickly conquered a large part of the peninsula apart from the centre and some coastal areas. Due to its limited opportunities, Constantinople did not used substantial military means to strike back against the aggression. Instead, the Empire resorted to intrigues, paying tributes to warlords, and seeking Frankish military support. At that time, the Exarchate of Ravenna was created as the structure governing Byzantine part of Italy. Relatively peaceful status quo was shaped in the beginning of the 7th century, the evidence of which was subsequent truces and the exchange of embassies at central authorities level in 609. It seems that the Lombard monarchy in Italy was not interested in a compromise in the form of even formal recognition of its dependence to Byzantium in exchange for imperial recognition of its right to rule the larger part of the peninsula, and a treaty concluded in 609 was the acknowledgement of the Lombard political independence. However, in the 7th century, the relations became less intense and tense, there were a few significant episodes. One of them was the conquest of Byzantine Liguria by the Lombards in the 40s. Another was the Italian expedition of Emperor Constans II, which was projected to, above all, strengthen the position of the Empire in the Mediterranean and prevent it from Muslim aggression. Implementing this concept the Emperor probably wanted to conquer the Duchy of Benevento as well, but he failed. It is possible that around 680 another treaty stabilizing the situation in Italy was concluded, but the source evidence concerning it is very ambiguous and due this fact its significance should not be overestimated, especially considering that the existence of this agreement is hard to prove. In the 8th century, the Lombard aggression towards the Exarchate was resumed. King Liuptrand efficiently strived to achieve unquestionable hegemony in Italy. At that time, the significance of the papacy increased and it took over, in the face of growing passivity of Constantinople towards the peninsula and weakness of the Exarch, the burden of negotiations with the Lombards. Aggressive attitude of the Lombard monarchy finally led it to the conquest of Ravenna and liquidation of the Exarchate around 751.

Behind the ward door. Ethnographic research in the hospital

Za drzwiami oddziału. Badania etnograficzne w szpitalu

Author(s): Dominika Byczkowska-Owczarek,Anna Kubczak,Beata Pawłowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: ethnography; qualitative methods; hospital; medicine; communication; emotions; management; uncertainty

The book Behind the ward door. Ethnographic research in the hospital is the result of several months of ethnographic research conducted in three hospital wards. It discusses the realities of work, showing the difficulties faced by hospital employees, which are often imperceptible to patients and their families. It shows the backstage of a medical institution, in which during the process of interaction meanings and contexts of work are negotiated. It introduces the organizational everyday life, seen through the eyes of medical staff. From the organizational ethnography perspective, by giving voice to their respondents, the authors analyzed the specifics of the ward as an organization, socially constructed space, management styles, the process of communication between representatives of medical staff, as well as the uncertainty and emotions experienced by medical professionals. The book is one of the few ethnographic Polish studies of conditions and contexts of work in hospital wards. The reading is recommended in particular to managers of health care institutions, but also to practitioners of communication in medicine, supporting and training health care workers in particular in the field of working with emotions and managing a medical team.
