The Succession Strategy in Family Businesses Listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange

Strategia sukcesji władzy i własności w spółkach rodzinnych notowanych na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie

Author(s): Aleksandra Majda-Kariozen / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: succession strategy; family business; management

The purpose of this publication was to diagnose the process of managerial and ownership succession in Polish family businesses listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. It is, to the best of the author’s knowledge, the first such study in the field of planning and implementing the intergenerational transfer of management functions and ownership, which applies only to family businesses whose shares are the subject of trade on the capital market in Poland. The subject is all the more important given that the process of first generational change in key management positions has already started in many Polish family businesses listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Additionally, within the context of the existing subject literature, planning and implementing the first succession strategy is particularly important for family entities and as such is bound to be associated with a higher level of risk than the subsequent intergenerational transfers. This publication is theoretical and empirical, and consists of four chapters. In the theoretical part, spanning the first three chapters, secondary sources were used to conduct literature studies on the basis of which conclusions have been formulated. The empirical part, presented in the last, fourth chapter, is a report on the author's own research conducted and completed in July 2018. On the basis of the data collected on the generation number and the number of people holding ownership in the analyzed family businesses, and the number of children holding positions in management and supervisory bodies, it may be observed that seniors in the analyzed entities are much more likely to include the offspring in the company's activities, but do not transfer the ownership to them. The results of the statistical tests carried out have shown the lack of dependence between the concentration of family ownership and the succession of management functions. This means that including offspring into the company's bodies is not dependent on the scope of the family ownership. At the same time, the analysis of the age of the seniors and the involvement of his their children in the company's activity may lead to a conclusion that the succession of management functions, as measured by the involvement of children in company bodies, is determined by the seniors’ age. Therefore, the older the senior, the more involvement of offspring in the company's bodies has been noted. Also, the relationship between the period of holding the position of chief executive officer (CEO) by the senior and the generational transfer of the management functions has been analyzed. Statistical tests have been performed to determine the correlation between the senior age and the succession of the ownership. The results suggest that in companies where the senior is older, the children are allotted more shares. However, the author’s findings also indicate that there is no relation between the period of holding the position of senior chief executive officer (CEO) and the succession of ownership. The results of the qualitative research made it possible to establish certain common features that occur in the case of family businesses that have started the succession process. These features create a specific canon of behavior of family businesses included in the study on succession.

Ethical Standards in the Assessment of Present and Future Bank Advisors

Standardy etyczne obsługi klientów w ocenie obecnych i przyszłych doradców bankowych

Author(s): Krzysztof Świeszczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: bank;ethics;bank advisors;ethical standards

The publication focuses on the determinants of ethical attitudes and differences in the way they are perceived by both present and future banking advisors. Based on the analysis of the conditions of ethical attitudes of banking advisors, factors determining the respect for ethical standards have been identified, and as a consequence the differences in the perception of the analyzed conditions have been examined. The analysis included the following variables: fear of worsening of professional situation on the labor market, fear of marginalization of a position in the team, a belief in non-compliance with ethical standards by bank advisors, a tendency to unconditionally comply with ethical standards in customer relations, as well as a trend to transfer responsibility for financial decisions to the customer. The conclusions that readers can possibly draw from the analysis of ethical attitudes of banking advisors from the perspective of both present and future banking advisors may largely contribute not only to the improvement of universities’ curricula, but also of training programs for employees of banking institutions. This may also help to strengthen respect for ethical standards in the banking sector.

Traditional and Modern Ways to Build the Trust of Commercial Bank Customers

Tradycyjny a nowoczesny sposób budowania zaufania klientów do banku na przykladzie mBanku

Author(s): Marika Świeszczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: advertisement;gamification;mBank;communication marketing;trust;banks

Marketing is an area that particularly affects consumer marketing decisions, especially through the use of instruments such as advertisement and gamification. Advertisements are traditional tools for shaping relationships with consumers, while gamification represents a modern and even innovative trend of marketing communication. In order to obtain knowledge about the impact of advertisement and gamification on consumer confidence in mBank, both a quantitative method (an experiment) and a qualitative method (an analysis of the contents of the selected advertisements and mGra) have been used. The choice of these methods seems to be the most appropriate one from the point of view of the research problem, since the quantitative approach allowed the author to explain the studied phenomenon, while the qualitative approach contributed to its understanding.

“The Imagining Consciousness”. Studies in the Anthropology of Literature

Świadomość rodząca obrazy. Studia z antropologii literatury

Author(s): Marzena Karwowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Gilbert Durand;Gaston Bachelard;Bolesław Leśmian;Stanisław Przybyszewski;Miron Białoszewski;Ksawery Pruszyński;myth;symbol;anthropology of literature;anthropological structures of imagination;20th-century Polish literature

Gilbert Durand, a French anthropologist of imagination and co-founder of the world’s first Centre for Research into the Imaginary (Centre de Recherche sur l’Imaginaire – CRI), established in 1966 at the University of Grenoble, is known primarily as the author of the work Les structures anthropologiques de l’imaginaire, first published in 1960. Academic interest in the theory of anthropological structures of imagination has been evidenced by theeleven reissues of the book in France, its translation into four foreign languages (Spanish, Italian, Romanian and English), and the creation of almost fifty Centres for Research into the Imaginary, which remain in cooperation with the parent centre in Grenoble and serve to creatively develop Durand's methodology. Research in this field has evolved dynamically and is the core focus of the hermeneutic school known as imaginaire, founded by Gaston Bachelard and developed by Gilbert Durand and his successors (the so-called School of Grenoble). This is referred to in the history of the humanities as the Great Change or New Anthropology.Gilbert Durand essays to describe man’s symbolic universe by extracting universal and timeless symbolic forms. He tries, by studying the transformation of images, to uncover the sources of imagination – eternally recurring elements which transcend both time and cultural differences. This study is also an attempt at an anthropological reading of a selection of the 20th-century Polish literary texts, all of which have already been interpreted by researchers on numerous occasions. Gaston Bachelard's theory of the intercultural “unity of imagination” and Gilbert Durand’s theory of the anthropological structures of imagination as well as his concept of cultural pluralism allow the artist to be seen as an imaginary phenomenon, the Dreaming Cogito, the Imagining Consciousness. The study contained in this monograph is intended to show, on the basis of the selected artistic texts, the interpretative potential of Bachelard-Durandian anthropology when applied to the hermeneutics of literary work.

Entrepreneurs, Athletes and Rebels. Social Determinants of Individual Investors’ Actions

Społeczne uwarunkowania działań inwestorów indywidualnych

Author(s): Łukasz Pyfel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: sociology of finance;individual investors;identity;leisure;earmarking;household budgeting;grounded theory methodology

Why do amateur investors wish to be connected to the images of entrepreneurs, athletes and rebels? What strategies do they employ to avoid being associated with the images of gamblers and suckers? Should amateur investing be classified as additional professional work or rather as a hobby (or even a passion)? How do they categorise their invested money? The author, basing on his qualitative research on the topic, tries to find answers to these and many other questions. The book presents individual investors as those who are more than homo economicus, fixated only on optimizing profit and possibly limited by cognitive biases. In place of this, the concept of the an investor as a being strongly embedded into a social world is presented. Such categories as identity, socially constructed expectations and relationship with others influence investors’ actions. This book will be of interest both to social and economic sciences academics, as well as to those who are in some way related to amateur investing.

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: on-line/off-line;experience writing;lifestyle;anthropological perspective;literate existence

In times of rapid technological change, enthusiasts of the new often subscribe to the theory of “supersession,” the idea that newer technologies supersede or vanquish older ones. But as scholar of information Paul Duguid has observed, reality is mare interesting and complicated than that. In the 1950s, for instance, when television was becoming popular, there were widespread predictions of radio’s imminent demise. Yet here it is2015 and radio is not only very much a live but has thrown off vibrant digital doppelgängers of itself, in the form of internet radio stations and podcasts. So it goes for all of human culture: There is really no predicting where it will go next.As the articles in this collection make clear, this is especially true of writing in our time, when old and new, on-line and off-line, are mixing, mashing up and recombining so prolifically, no single theory could ever explain it all, let alone foretell its evolution. So it’s fitting that what we have in this volume is not a collection of definitive, supersession-like answers, but a multiplicity of fascinating questions explored in depth. Are microblogs a new literary genre? What happens when Japanese haiku leap across cultures? Is writing inherently an act of individuality, as we tend to believe, or is that idea just “a fruit of modernity”? Such questions will swirl around us for decades to come, and to make our way forward we will need intellectual roadmaps with the wide-ranging curiosity, et al.

New Media Behind the Iron Curtain. Cultural History of Video Microcomputers and Satellite Television in Communist Poland

Author(s): Piotr Sitarski,Maria B. Garda,Krzysztof Jajko / Language(s): English

Keywords: New Media; Iron Curtain; History of Video; History of Microcomputers; History of Satellite Television; Communist Poland

During the years of the Polish People’s Republic, Poles were cut off from the western world. Travel was restricted, as was access to out- side culture and goods. This unique situation led to a period of great ingenuity in the realm of new media. Not only were media adapted to suit Poles’ needs, but new technology was fashioned to gain access to western television, film and video games. Bringing people together, VCRs, computers and satellite television were thus a window to the outside world and contemporary to the mobilisation of Solidarity and the end of communism. As such, their diffusion is an important but largely overlooked aspect of Poland’s history. Acutely aware of this, the authors of this book recount new media behind the Iron Curtain in a way that will appeal to scholars and non-academic readers alike. Coupling archival research with in depth interviews, they bring to life the talent and determination of the PPR’s new media pioneers, compelling others to dig further.“One of the strengths of this book, which makes it such a delightful read, is the feeling of chaotic technical experimentation with objects and practices whose meaning has not yet been settled, in a context where the authorities tried to be controlling and restrictive but were mostly incapable of understanding what they should do in order to achieve this.”– from the Foreword by Graeme Kirkpatrick

Towards the Modern Theory of Motion. Oxford Calculators and the new interpretation of Aristotle

Author(s): Elżbieta Jung,Robert Podkoński / Language(s): English

Keywords: Oxford Calculators; Natural Philosophy; Aristotle’s philosophy; Richard Kilvington; William Heytesbury; John Dumbleton

The problem of the continuity of science from the medieval to the modern times of the 17th century, when Galileo and Newton developed the correct theory of mechanics, occupied historians of science from the beginning of the 20th century. Some believe that the fourteenth-century English scholars who created the School of Oxford Calculators and their French and Italian followers. with their solutions, laid the foundations for the development of modern physics. Others believe that medieval natural philosophy made no contribution to the development of modern science. The presented book is a voice in this discussion and an attempt to answer the question about the continuity of science. Considering how much has been discovered, edited and written about the Oxford Calculators, the book reviews and compares the results of our research with works of the other historians’ research into the intellectual heritage of these 14th century English thinkers in order to enrich and update the views on the Oxford Calculators’ natural philosophy in perhaps its most fundamental aspect – at least from the point of view of Aristotle’s philosophy – namely the subject of “science of local motion.”The discussion are mostly focused on topics that were important to medieval thinkers and not those that could be most interesting from the modern point of view, and the research are directed on the Oxford Calculators’ tradition in science toward a prospecting of the innovative character of their teaching, and here first of all against the background of Aristotelian theories, and then the subsequent search for possible innovations which could have inspired early modern scientists. As the conclusions of the research on the theories of Oxford calculators are still formulated mainly on the basis of analyzes of incomplete printed texts, the critical editions of Latin texts are offered. These are not only the most famous Calculators’ works, such as William Heytesbury’s De tribus praedicamentis: de motu locali or John Dumbleton’s Part III of the Summa logicae et philosophiae naturalis, but also of a hither to unknown work by Richard Kilvington, i.e., his question on local motion and the question on local motion written by the anonymous author of the treatise De sex inconvenientibus.

Freedom of Expression in Election Campaigns

Wolność wypowiedzi w kampaniach wyborczych

Author(s): Patryk Kowalski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: freedom of speech in election campaigns;freedom of expression;freedom of speech;election campaign;elections, hate speech;lawsuit in election mode

The research hypothesis adopted by the author at the beginning of the research process assumed that freedom of expression in election campaigns is legally restricted to a large extent by the constitution of the Republic of Poland while it should be granted a higher level of protection in comparison to other constitutional freedoms. At various stages of the research process diverse methods such as dogmatic, comparative, empirical and historical were used to validate the hypothesis. The main research hypothesis has largely been proven to be true. Freedom of expression in election campaigns is legally restricted to a large extent by the constitution of the Republic of Poland. The assumption put forward in the first part of the publication that freedom of expression in election campaigns is legally restricted to a large extent by the constitution of the Republic of Poland has been fully confirmed. The second part of the analysis premised on the proposition of a higher level of protection for freedom of expression in comparison to other constitutional freedoms has been substantiated only partially.

Andropause, or the midlife crisis.

Andropauza czy kryzys wieku średniego

Author(s): Karolina Jarecka,Eleonora Bielawska-Batorowicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Andropause;andropause symptoms;midlife crisis;man's quality of life;health;mental well-being

The monography concerns the psychological and social effects of hormonal changes experienced in middle adulthood - andropause, which is the subject of social science research much less frequently than menopause. The main emphasis in the monography was placed on the biological aspects of andropause and the social and psychological conditioning of experiences in this period, considering menopause only as a context for comparisons. While characterizing andropause, attention was drawn to the controversy around the terminology and around the criteria for its diagnosis, as well as to various psychosocial consequences and changes in male functioning, including the quality of life in middle and late adulthood. The authors' own research, conducted with the participation of men aged 45-68, showed an increase in the intensity of andropausal symptoms with age - mainly sexual and vasomotor ones, and a relationship between the intensity of symptoms and the general health condition and lifestyle. The engagement in various activities, professional and non-professional, good relationships in a partner relationship and a positive attitude towards andropause and aging were characteristic of men with definitely less intense andropausal symptoms.

Expected credit loss model in financial reporting - concept and application

Model oczekiwanych strat kredytowych w sprawozdawczości finansowej. Koncepcja i zastosowanie

Author(s): Maciej Frendzel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: accounting;financial reporting;credit losses;credit risk

International Financial Reporting Standard 9 "Financial Instruments" introduced a new model for determination of write-downs for financial assets and for recognition of provisions for financial guarantees and loan commitments, known as the expected credit loss model (ECL model). The new solution takes into account not only the occurrence of default and identified credit losses, but also the entity's expectations regarding future credit losses, along with changes in the financial situation of contractors and macroeconomic factors. The book addresses those issues, mainly discussing conceptual premises of expected credit loss model, its consistence with concept of credit risk, and its application to different items and transactions. In the book there presented also the results of research referring to the impact of ECL model on companies listed on Warsaw Stock Exchange in 2018.

Dependence of the Ukrainian economy on the state of energy relations with the Russian Federation

Zależność gospodarki Ukrainy od stanu relacji energetycznych z Federacją Rosyjską

Author(s): Tomasz Motowidlak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: the economy of Ukraine; energy of Ukraine; relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation in the energy sector

The state of energy relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation is of great importance for the economy of Ukraine. This significance results not only from the clear asymmetry of these relations in favor of the Russian Federation (RF), but also from its treatment of RF as an instrument of pressure to pursue its economic and political interests in Ukraine. The book presents the sensitivity of the key parameters of the Ukrainian economy, i.e. gross domestic product, balance of payments, trade balance, state of the budget and the amount of debt, to energy factors. The place of the energy sector in the Ukrainian economy was determined and its main internal problems were indicated. The main instruments of the energy pressure of the RF on the Ukrainian economy were identified, including causing crises in the energy and economy of Ukraine, strengthening Ukraine's dependence on supplies of energy resources and fuels from the RF, limiting the role of Ukraine as a gas transit country and promoting destabilization of the energy and economy of Ukraine. The content of the book includes a presentation of the main activities undertaken by Ukraine in order to limit the scope and effects of the use of energy pressure instruments by the RF. These activities include activities of a national nature (e.g. efforts to increase domestic gas production), national-international activities (e.g. efforts to integrate the electricity system with the European system), and international activities (e.g. using the jurisprudence of international arbitration bodies). In conclusion, an assessment of the changes in the period 2010-2020 of the effectiveness of the instruments of energy influence of the RF and of Ukraine's activities aimed at reducing the scope and effects of their application.

Science communication in Poland. Vaccines, alternative medicine, climate change, GMOs – under the magnifying glass

Komunikacja naukowa w Polsce. Szczepionki, medycyna alternatywna, zmiany klimatyczne, GMO pod lupą

Author(s): Aneta Krzewińska,Małgorzata Dzimińska,Izabela Warwas,Justyna Wiktorowicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: science communication; vaccines; climate change; alternative medicine; GMOs

This monograph presents the results of a qualitative study conducted in the H2020 CONCISE project – Communication role on perception and beliefs of EU citizens about science, which aimed to investigate the role of science communication in shaping the knowledge, opinions and beliefs of EU citizens about science. One-day public consultations were carried out in Poland, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia and Italy, in which 100 selected citizens of the given country participated. This publication presents the results of the consultation carried out in Poland – in September 2019 in Lodz. During a moderated discussion, the participants of the consultation shared their opinions on science communication, including opportunities and barriers to the dissemination of scientific information. The publication consists of four chapters corresponding to the four consultation topics – climate change, vaccines, GMOs, alternative medicine – and a summary. Based on the opinions of the participants of the consultations conducted within the CONCISE project, it was possible to draw conclusions about science communication for the discussed topics, however, it was not possible to find a standard for science communication in Poland, which could constitute a universal signpost for scientists, popularisers of science or journalists. Each science topic requires an appropriate communication strategy. For each topic, the recipients formulated different preferences as to where and in what form they would like to receive information. Therefore, it seems reasonable to recommend that communicators of scientific content on a given topic diagnose well the preferences of their audiences in this area before communicating science.

Maternal-fetal attachment in high-risk pregnancy

Więź matki z dzieckiem w okresie prenatalnym w ciąży wysokiego ryzyka

Author(s): Marta Kucharska-Hauk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: high-risk pregnancy; maternal-fetal attachment; prenatal attachment; pregnancy with congenital malformations; pregnancy experience

The purpose of this study was to compare the Maternal-Fetal Attachment in healthy pregnancies and pregnancies with congenital disorders and other complications. In addition, identify predictors of MFA in physiological and high-risk pregnancies. The study group included women in pregnancies with congenital disorder (n = 65) or with other pregnancy complications (n = 65). A third group included women in healthy pregnancies (n = 65). Data were collected by: Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale, Questionnaire of Attachment Styles, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Social Support Scale, standardized interview, Dependency on Intimate Partner Scale, Pregnancy Experiences Scale. No significant differences in MFA were found between the groups. No predictors of MFA were observed for the women with a pregnancy with congenital disorder. In the group of pregnancies with other complications, the only predictor of attachment intensity was pregnancy experience: a more negative attitude toward pregnancy was associated with lower MFA. In physiological pregnancies, MFA was found to be determined by pregnancy experience, gestational age, maternal age and dependency on one’s intimate partner. MFA increased as pregnancy progressed. Younger mothers in physiological pregnancies, who have more positive pregnancy experiences and are less dependent on partner, achieve higher levels of MFA. The presence of high-risk pregnancy, or its absence, does not differentiate the intensity of the emotional bond between mother and fetus. However, women with healthy pregnancies demonstrate different predictors of MFA than those with high-risk pregnancies. The purpose of this study was to compare the Maternal-Fetal Attachment in healthy pregnancies and pregnancies with congenital disorders and other complications. Determinants of operational budgeting success in manufacturing enterprises

Determinants of operational budgeting success in manufacturing enterprises

Author(s): Żaneta Pietrzak / Language(s): English

Keywords: operational budgeting; manufacturing enterprises

The book aims to measure and evaluate the use/success of operational budgeting in Polish companies and to identify and measure the determinants of success, based on the suggested model. It focuses mainly on: (a) the role of operational budgeting in the process of managing a company, (b) the variables that influence how the use/success of operational budgeting is assessed, to present factors that determine individual variables, and to identify the relationships and links between them, and (c) a model that helps to measure and evaluate the use/success of operational budgeting. This book tries to fill the knowledge gap on the quality and benefits that arise from well-designed Operational Budgeting Systems. To get benefits, it is necessary to assess the current budget system. With that, the author reduces ambiguity about assessing the use of operational budgeting. The author limits her approach to the production sector and Poland. Still, I believe this approach can be expanded across the sectors and countries. Therefore, I see a relevant contribution in practice. Also, it opens the way and shows directions to diagnosing and improving firms’ Operational Budgeting Systems. This publication is commendable; it puts traditional budgeting – which has been highly criticized into context and presents its value, role, and its contribution in a Control System. In response to those criticisms, the author points to the quality aspect of operational budgeting, showing its usefulness to users and organizations. The Role of Franchising in Creating Franchisor Enterprise Value, as Seen in the Case of the Catering Industry

Franczyza w procesie tworzenia wartości przedsiębiorstwa franczyzodawcy na przykładzie branży gastronomicznej

Author(s): Żaklina Jabłońska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Franchising; franchise enterprises; lower bankruptcy risk; franchisor enterprise value; franchisor; franchisee;

The book is an important contribution to the scientific discussion on the development of franchising in Poland. It highlights the significance of franchising in building the value of an enterprise. Polish companies generally seek the benefits of franchising as franchisees, adopting a tried business model that guarantees an easier entry into the market as well as a lower bankruptcy risk. Franchise enterprises are able to create their value in a definitely shorter period of time (gaining market share, a recognizable brand, loyal customers, more favorable purchasing terms). However, a gap exists in the Polish scientific literature when it comes to the influence of franchising on the value of the franchisor’s enterprise. Relevant research in this area has been in short supply. Therefore, there is an obvious need to address this omission by studying the phenomenon, conducting necessary analyses and presenting the existing mechanisms. The results of this research constitute a valuable source of information both for scientists and professionals interested in the implementation of franchising in business.
