Summary/Abstract: Why do amateur investors wish to be connected to the images of entrepreneurs, athletes and rebels? What strategies do they employ to avoid being associated with the images of gamblers and suckers? Should amateur investing be classified as additional professional work or rather as a hobby (or even a passion)? How do they categorise their invested money? The author, basing on his qualitative research on the topic, tries to find answers to these and many other questions. The book presents individual investors as those who are more than homo economicus, fixated only on optimizing profit and possibly limited by cognitive biases. In place of this, the concept of the an investor as a being strongly embedded into a social world is presented. Such categories as identity, socially constructed expectations and relationship with others influence investors’ actions. This book will be of interest both to social and economic sciences academics, as well as to those who are in some way related to amateur investing.
