Management Myths. A Critical View

Mity w zarządzaniu. Próba krytycznego spojrzenia

Author(s): Czesław Sikorski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: dark side of business;product brand;image of an organization;charismatic leader;corporate cult;business organizations;self-realization

The book deals with the topic of myths in the relationship between a business organization and its employees and clients. They play the role of a tool with which organizations strive to subordinate stakeholders to suit their goals. The strength of this illusion turns out to be very effective, which is why it is often used in social life. But can the fact that many people succumb to the illusory power of myths be an excuse for those who cynically use it? The publication’s audience is a wide range of readers interested in the problems of contemporary civilization but primarily students and practitioners of management.

The Polish Language General Didactics

Polonistyczna dydaktyka ogólna

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: didactics;methodology;Polish language education;curriculum;lesson theory;teaching aids;homework;textbooks;Tadeusz Czapczyński;upbringing;teaching;learning

The book is a didactic compendium for students preparing for the role of a teacher of Polish. The authors draw on the latest research in various disciplines: linguistics, literature, didactics of the Polish language, pedagogy, psychology, and also associate Polish didactics with general didactics. The publication contains guidelines on the use of general didactic methods in Polish language teaching and the need to use the digital learning environment. The rationale behind any Polish language didactics handbook is to organize and link the goals and methods of cultural and literary as well as cultural and linguistic education, explaining the purposefulness and meaning of the teacher's activities, but also directing the teacher’s methodological ratiocination. The book has therefore been built on solid foundations in accordance with the logic of the argumentation, covering the full spectrum of the subject matter indicated by the title, i.e. student and teacher topics, methods and principles as well as forms of teaching, textbooks, core curriculum, organization of lessons and homework, teaching aids, and finally evaluation of education results. […] The authors of The Polish Language General Didactics are practitioners, so they have an understanding of both the psychophysical capabilities of students and the deficiencies in the students’ and teachers’ didactic perception. They accurately explain the problems that are still insufficiently understood by teacher candidates – for instance, when they elucidate the role of the preamble to the curriculum and emphasize that teachers have the right to introduce innovations to the accepted course [...] or even develop an original program [...]. The examples have been carefully selected to inspire the updating of literary classics and thinking about language in terms of the contemporary cultural linguistics. A City in Polish Linguistic Research

Miasto w polskich badaniach lingwistycznych

Author(s): Danuta Bieńkowska,Elżbieta Umińska-Tytoń / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: urban folklore;graphosphere;sticker art;sociolect;urban dialects;graffiti;regional Polish vernacular

The book has a reporting and systematizing character. Having analyzed the existing – and already abundant – literature on the subject, the authors show a comprehensive outline of over one hundred years’ output of the Polish language linguistics in the field of urban research, and lay out the fundamentals of the most frequently undertaken topics related to the diversified urban space. The publication serves as a guidebook to linguistic research on the language of city dwellers and urban textual content and may be an inspiration for independent studies in the field. The target audience is the general public. The book will resonate well with professionals and laymen with a shared interest in the city, its space and inhabitants.

John Rawls. Justification, Justice and Public Reason

John Rawls. Uzasadnienie, sprawiedliwość i rozum publiczny

Author(s): Krzysztof Kędziora / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: John Rawls;constructivism;theory of justice;political philosophy;contractualism;principles of justice

John Rawls's theory of justice, like his philosophy of politics, is not easy to grasp intellectually. Although he was an American philosopher and he was apparently close to the Anglo-Saxon analytical tradition in philosophy which is characterized by the pursuit of style perspicuity and general intellectual clarity, the reader of his Theory of Justice and, to a lesser extent, other works certainly does not have an easy task. Following the meanders of Rawls's thoughts seems rather difficult and requires a considerable measure of focus and attention. In this sense, an introduction to his theory of justice and political philosophy is certainly necessary, so Krzysztof Kędziora's project should be welcomed with joy. Its implementation also invites respect and commendation. From the review by prof. Andrzej Szahaj

Veliky Novgorod. A Historical and Cultural Guidebook to the Medieval Republic

Nowogród Wielki. Historyczno-kulturowy przewodnik po średniowiecznej republice

Author(s): Zofia A. Brzozowska,Mirosław J. Leszka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Novgorod First Chronicle;Novgorod bishops and archbishops;Novgorod princes;Novgorod Eastern Orthodox churches;Yaroslav’s Court;St. Sophia Cathedral;Novgorod Kremlin;Rurikovo Gorodische;Veliky Novgorod

This is the first guide to Veliky Novgorod written in Polish. It offers a tour of about forty-five historical sites in the city and the surrounding area, arranged in a geographical order. These include the Novgorod Kremlin, St. Sophia Cathedral, the seat of the archbishops of Novgorod, Yaroslav’s Court, the Marketplace, houses of the Hansa League merchants, Rurikovo Gorodische. The reader will find here not only a coherent history of the city and of the political entity associated with it – the medieval merchant republic, but also a systematic presentation of the most significant topics related to Novgorod’s cultural and religious character, the independent development of which was shaped by the influence of the Byzantine civilization.Veliky Novgorod, one of many cities in the European part of contemporary Russia, located – as the iconic Polish singer and poet Jacek Kaczmarski put it – “among fields and marshlands,” is a real enigma. It has fascinated numerous artists and researchers for centuries, so much so that in the popular image of Veliky Novgorod, historical truth has become inseparably intertwined with myth. Even back in the Middle Ages, Veliky Novgorod ignited the imagination with its richness of a thriving trading hub which had been in contact with the Hanseatic League since the late twelfth century, and thus – for many centuries before the founding of St. Petersburg – a kind of Rus’ people’s window on Europe. The unique culture of the city on the Volkhov River, flourishing most fully from the 13th to the 15th century, and then brutally suppressed by Muscovite rulers, belies the stereotypical assumption which would perceive the Eastern Slavs as incapable of living in a democratic system. Styles of Functioning of Young People with Hearing Impairments in Close Interpersonal Relationships

Style funkcjonowania młodych osób z uszkodzeniami słuchu w bliskich relacjach interpersonalnych

Author(s): Diana Müller-Siekierska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: sense of loneliness;hearing disability;hearing impairment;interpersonal relations

The inspiration for taking up the subject was the experience of working in psychological counseling for students with disabilities. The functioning of adolescents with serious hearing impairment in interpersonal relationships deserves the interest of psychologists and educators. Difficulties in mutual understanding are experienced by all people, also those with perfect auditory perception; but the hard of hearing face many more challenges which are also more severe and often difficult to overcome. The value of the research presented in the monograph results from the fact that they provide credible arguments justifying the need for organized support for hearing-impaired students as well as – indirectly – the need for psychological care extended to families bringing up children with hearing impairments and for people tackling the auditory faculty problems, especially during adolescence.

Logistics in E-Commerce. Customer Value

Obsługa logistyczna w handlu elektronicznym. Wartość dla klienta

Author(s): Dagmara Skurpel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: e-commerce;e-customer;e-commerce logistics;e-business;online stores;electronic business transactions

The challenges of recent years such as digitization, virtualization, the increase in the importance of social networking, real-time communication have all brought about distinct changes in the ways of creating customer value by entrepreneurs, visible in new logistic and marketing activities as well as the use of innovative management tools. The author of the monograph focuses on the topic of creating customer value in e-commerce. Her deliberations are centered around the premise that logistic aspects of electronic business transactions create customer values that affect regular purchasing decisions. The purpose of the book is to identify logistical factors that create value for the retail customer in e-commerce. Diagnosing the current state of the e-commerce market required the author to conduct research covering both the demand and supply side of the market, which made it possible to determine the value gap between the expected and delivered service levels.

The Vows. A Dramatic Poem in Three Acts

Śluby. Poemat dramatyczny w trzech aktach

Author(s): Karolina Goławska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: The Vows;Gelübde;Stanisław Przybyszewski;drama;play

In his 1907 review in the Słowo Polskie daily published in Lwów, the Polish writer Kornel Makuszyński ventured a tentatively critical judgment on The Vows, suggesting that appropriate distancing might be prerequisite when evaluating Przybyszewski’s work. That condition seems to have been met today: the passing of over a hundred years since the original publication has created not only a temporal but also a cognitive distance. A re-edition of the play offers an opportunity to read it anew. The word “read” is key here, since The Vows is by all means a literary text.

The Significance of the Bicameral Principle in the Political Practice of Selected Democracies of Southeast Asia. Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor

Znaczenie zasady dwuizbowości w praktyce ustrojowej wybranych demokracji Azji Południowo-Wschodniej. Malezja, Singapur, Tajlandia, Timor Wschodni

Author(s): Anna Michalak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Legislation;normative acts;bicameral parliament;legislature;Southeast Asia

The existing parliamentary classifications indicate that researchers of the Atlantic area do not refer in their inquiries to the countries of Southeast Asia and the political solutions adopted there. Therefore, the region in question requires legal and comparative research, particularly in terms of analyzing the adaptation of institutions, their modifications and unique, characteristic solutions. The present monograph is the result of research conducted in the years 2014–2017, aimed at analyzing the functioning of legislative bodies in selected democracies of Southeast Asia. The author elucidates the significance behind the introduction of a bicameral structure of parliament in the countries of this region, breaking her analysis down into several aspects: legal (incorporation of bicameralism in normative acts), functional (changes in the effectiveness of the legislative process and in exercising other prerogatives by the legislature) and political (stabilization of governments, one-party hegemony).

Opera in Poland in the Years 1635–1795

Opera w Polsce w latach 1635–1795

Author(s): Grzegorz Markiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Stanisław August Poniatowski;opera art;theatre in Poland;opera in Poland;National Theatre;Enlightenment

The publication tells a story about opera in Poland in the years 1635–1795. The author analyzes various stage and music forms created within that period which were commonly referred to as opera. Referring to the native as well as European historical context, he focuses exclusively on opera works staged by foreign troupes at the royal court and on the public national stage established under king Stanisław August Poniatowski’s auspices. A synthesis devoted to the opera in Poland has been conspicuous by its absence in the subject literature. This book covers the period from the appearance of the first opera works in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth during the House of Vasa rule to the beginnings of the Polish opera works at the time of king Stanisław August Poniatowski. The present work – written from the perspective of a historian of ideas and social awareness – constitutes the first part of a larger original project devoted to the history of the Polish opera from its beginnings until 1918. It is hoped that the book will attract wide readership, particularly historians, culture experts, theatre specialists and musicologists.*“The author has constructed a cognitively valuable and reliably documented monograph covering the first one hundred and sixty years of the opera's presence in Poland. Undoubtedly, there is a shortage of such studies on the Polish publishing market.” From the review by dr hab. Krzysztof Kurek, prof. UAM

Author(s): Joanna Jabłkowska,Dorota Bartnik,Tomasz Piestrzyński,Piotr Lewkowicz,Cora Dietl,Jakub Gortat,Vanessa de Senarclens,Tomasz Ososiński,Heinrich Hofmann,Małgorzata Kubisiak / Language(s): Polish,German

Keywords: Plathe Castle Library;polyglot Bible;Vogel Halcyon;biblical philology;epitaphs;Carmina Funebria;Prussian State Library;German-language prints;the University of Łódź Library

Founded just after World War II, the University of Łódź Library has a significant collection of old prints which were once the core of the book collection. These ancient volumes come from the private libraries of the noble families of Prussia, Silesia and Pomerania, as well as from school repositories and private collections evacuated from war zones to the areas granted to Poland after WWII. As part of a project implemented in cooperation between the University of Łódź and the University of Gießen, it was possible to draw up the first systematic record of early 16th-century German-language prints in the antique books collection of the University of Łódź Library. The publication not only presents the history but also discusses some of the unique items in the set. Examples of research possibilities which arise from providing access to this valuable collection have also been presented: from the reconstruction of lost libraries and reconstruction of the network of scientific connections of the era of humanism, to the history of reception of the most important texts of the Reformation period.

Post-Koiné. Studies in Non-anthropocentric (Poetic) Languages

Post-koiné. Studia o nieantropocentrycznych językach (poetyckich)

Author(s): Anita Jarzyna / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: poetic languages;animals in poetry;crimes in literature;extermination in Polish poetry

The monograph proposes an original formula of community and communication transcending that of the human species. The concept presented in the book explores non-symbolic ways of representing animals, forms of weakening human subjectivity as well as the mechanism of producing anthropological difference. In the author’s opinion, a critical reflection on a language that serves to consolidate a community must lead to redefining the attitude of humans towards animals. Anita Jarzyna reveals the emancipatory potential of poems, designs the possibility of experimental reading, showing that male and female poets of the second half of the twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries, by describing interspecific relations, expose forms of oppression and discourses of violence (including anti-Semitic, theological, patriarchal, hunting, butchering, medical, zoological variants). Simultaneously, those same authors present their search for a non anthropocentric language, creating alternative visions of interspecies alliances, affirmative ties, creating polemical, inclusive languages, striving for the equality of attitude towards animals to be manifested in everything they say, not only when they refer to them directly. Finding various approaches to a non anthroponormative perspective in the poems, the author of the book treats poetry as a statement equal with discursive views demanding the abolition of human domination; she also points out that the conceptualizations of literary studies on animals can be derived from the poetic metareflection that is formed in the language used by people and which henceforth is not intended to serve them exclusively.“Anita Jarzyna's publication is by all means necessary; in Poland it is an innovative approach to animal studies and Polish poetry; intellectually courageous and deeply reflective. It can serve as a guide for passionate and ethically indifferent thinking, being a revision of the reading of poems by Polish authors and a proposal of a new perspective for the study of language and texts (not only poetic ones).

In Defense of Tradition. The Meaning of Tradition in the Philosophy of Erasmus of Rotterdam and Its Defense against Reformational Criticism

W obronie tradycji. Znaczenie tradycji w filozofii Erazma z Rotterdamu i jej obrona przed krytyką Reformacji

Author(s): Dawid Nowakowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: humanistic tradition; humanism; scholasticism; Robert Gaguin; Erasmus of Rotterdam; hermeneutics

According to Erasmus, philosophizing begins with listening to the flowing message of tradition, with meditative reading of soul-stirring content or with gazing at the ideal of a master and allowing ourselves to internalize what we have received. This was the aim of Erasmus’s “new reading,” through which he wanted to transform the individual; this was the goal of the bonae litterae, for which he had so passionately sought; this was also the purpose of the Christian Gospel. This stage, built by teaching alone, can be called “internalization of tradition” – a change of mind that is necessary for anyone who wants to change their lives. The publication is primarily devoted to Erasmus – an underestimated thinker unjustly pushed by reflection to an area outside of philosophy. Meanwhile, his vision turns out not only to be a coherent philosophy, but also one that is more aware of itself and its limitations than the philosophical concepts of scholasticism and modern rationalism. Tradition is the key concept that permeates and conditions the thinking and attitude of Erasmus. Whether his vision of tradition can still be seen as fully valid is debatable, and certainly requires further analysis. However, there is no doubt that it remains attractive and inspiring. It is the author’s wish that the present book could be a kind of “user guide to tradition”, but also to ourselves and to cultivating humanity. “This is not a colourless, erudite dissertation on a chosen topic. This is an interesting, even fascinating read, which in my opinion – thanks to its scope, poetics and style – has a chance to become the subject of interest for a great many readers.” From the review by prof. Juliusz Domański

Experience of Spirituality. Philosophical and Literary Contexts

Doświadczenie duchowości. Konteksty filozoficzno-literackie

Author(s): Anna Walczak,Artur Jocz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Zygmunt Krasiński;death and suffering;Jerzy Hulewicz;Bruno Schulz;Adam Wiśniewski Snerg;spirituality;carnality;pleasure

We have made philosophy and literature the subject of our intellectual research, because they, apart from religion, also claim the right to an intellectual and artistic exploration of the experience of spirituality. Therefore, we discuss the experience of spirituality in a philosophical and literary context. We did not want to reconstruct any theory that would free the object under study from the unknowability and ambiguity attributed to it by the interpretative tradition. Our intention is much more modest: we want to talk about the experience of spirituality in two languages: the philosophical and the literary. The first part of the book is therefore characterized by a greater degree of generality of the formulated considerations, whereas the second part focuses on the analysis of the literary experience of spirituality, i.e on its artistic visualizations. First of all, we write about a certain significant potential of literature, which manifests itself in transcending its narrowly understood poetic function. Keywords: infographics;internet;visual communication;journalism;new media;data journalism

New media, processes of convergence or the ongoing changes in internet communication form the inspiration behind the observation of new forms of message combined with internet adaptations of genres. The dynamic development of visual communication in the media raises questions about the role of text in multimedia and graphic communication, of whether images are usurping words, and also whether visual messages appeal exclusively to the aesthetics of the experience or of they also supplement the effectiveness of the message. These and other questions led to research the new journalistic genre – infographics. Demonstrating the trends and phenomena that pass unnoticed on a surface reading of such materials made it possible to present and analyse a variety of graphic types, also considering the phenomenon of image manipulation. The study of specific examples helps here. The multifaceted nature of infographics concludes with a description and definition of infographics as a journalistic genre. This is illustrated by an analysis of examples from selected media – both press and Internet. To this end, three varieties of print media were chosen – tabloid, national Polish daily and monthly periodical. In the analysis of internet websites, a comparison of the two, largest Polish horizontal portals – WP.pl and Onet.pl as well as a specialist vortal which deals with data journalism – BIQdata.pl. Both analyses lead to the conclusion that infographics in journalism is an important element of multi-modal narration, a genre which is a consistent element in media design, increasing the attractiveness of newspapers and internet sites.
