Summary/Abstract: The title 'figures of change' are images that appear widely in literature and culture of Modernism in its broad sense and are closely related to the experience of Central and Eastern Europe. They are also a kind of insight into the space and structure of the cultural imaginarium developing dynamically under the influence of changes brought by modernity. The authors direct their attention particularly on literary ideas characterized by clarity and some durability that are strongly connected to the space of Central and Eastern Europe during the period of modernization changes in 1864–1939. It is an attempt to reconstruct the repertoire of common and important ideas for this area (about characters, narratives, events, etc., fictional and factual) and the meanings associated with these manifestations.

- Summary/Abstract:The article analyzes the depiction of prisoners in the literature of the second half of the 19th century, based on selected works by Maria Konopnicka and Eliza Orzeszkowa. The prisoner is presented as a figure of modernity, through which the authors reflect on the condition of the individual confronted with social institutions and mechanisms of exclusion. In literary representations, prison not only physically degrades a person but also proves ineffective as a space of rehabilitation. The narratives expose the superficiality of moralizing measures and reveal barriers such as illiteracy and stigmatization. Particular attention is paid to the contrast between recidivists, who manage to adapt to prison conditions, and individuals with potential for reintegration, who struggle both during imprisonment and after release. Positivist literature reveals these tensions and contradictions related to the functioning of prisons and society’s attitudes toward former prisoners.

- Summary/Abstract:Literary representations of the hotel in 19th century Polish literature form a distinctive diegetic sequence, highlighting the evolution of the Polish hotel motif, primarily in the works of Kraszewski, Norwid, Prus, Orzeszkowa, Żeromski, and Nałkowska. By focusing on the shaping and transformation of the identities of hotel managers and staff, the author presents the hotel as a place operating under the special laws of heightened psychocultural alienation, and as a meeting point, a metonymic cross-section, a modern ark of human fates, socially oriented or, oppositely, marginalized by society.

- Summary/Abstract:This article offers an analysis of Marcelina Kulikowska’s novel 'W promieniach' ('In the Rays'), with particular focus on the representation of female subjectivity and activism within the context of the 1905 revolution. The study aims to elucidate the novel’s philosophical underpinnings and to examine the literary construction of revolutionary women participating in the socialist movement, emphasizing the pivotal role of somatics in character development. The article situates the work within its historical and social milieu, supplementing the analysis by incorporating manuscript excerpts from the author’s diary, which provide additional insights into her perspectives on class-based feminism. In contrast to prevailing interpretations of the revolution, Kulikowska articulates a positive model of female agency that subverts the ethos of self-sacrifice and foregrounds heroines who are consciously engaged in processes of social and historical transformation.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the postulates of the Lithuanian poetic avant-garde of the 1920s, centered around the magazine 'Keturi vėjai' ('Four Winds'), through the analysis of the work of its most prominent representative, Kazys Binkis (1893–1942). The text focuses on selections from his collection '100 pavasarių' ('One Hundred Springs', 1923), which is regarded as a pivotal moment in Lithuanian poetry of the first half of the 20th century, signifying the advent of the post-Romantic era in Lithuanian literary history. The necessity to question and reevaluate the dominant canon of Romantic patriotic poetry is most explicitly reflected in the attitude of the lyrical subject, who, in Binkis’s poetry, assumes the form of a light-hearted character (vėjavaikis) – spontaneous, unrestrained, and celebrating the concept of freedom.

- Summary/Abstract:The article examines the figure of the 'great initiate' as a symbol of change in Tadeusz Miciński’s novel 'Nietota. The Secret Book of the Tatras'. The analysis focuses on Mag Litwor, whose spiritual journey embodies the process of initiation that integrates Christ-like and Luciferian elements while drawing upon Western, Far Eastern, and Slavic traditions of Polish culture. At the root of this inner transformation lies the recognition of what is repressed in the collective unconscious. Mag’s purpose is not limited to individual enlightenment but extends to supporting the Polish community on its path toward renewal and national freedom. The figure of the 'great initiate' is thus presented as a model of modernist transformation of both the individual and the nation.

- Summary/Abstract:The article explores the figure of Hanna Krzemieniecka (Janina Furs-Żyrkiewicz) in the context of her involvement with the Theosophical Society and the influence of esoteric ideas on her literary works. It examines three of her novels ('Fatum, A gdy odejdzie…, Lecą wichry!') to show how cosmology shaped the spiritual evolution of the protagonists. The paper highlights Krzemieniecka’s role in the Warsaw theosophical milieu of the early 20th century and emphasizes the emancipatory dimension of esoteric movements, especially for women. - Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on a topic seldom discussed even if the limited reception of Stanisław Witkiewicz’s written output is taken into account. This painter, art critic, columnist (of 'Wędrowiec' ['The Wanderer'], among others), writer and creator of the Zakopane architectural style proved to be a particularly uncompromising critic of the Catholic Church’s social doctrine. It was no accident that Witkiewicz experienced difficulties with bringing his pamphlet out in print (and the publication in 'Reforma Szkolna' ['School Reform'] turned out to be a hard compromise with the demands of censorship). In it, he demonstrated how far the letter of the catechism is removed from the spirit of the Gospel. The author of 'Życie, etyka i rewolucja' ['Life, ethics and revolution'] challenged the tendency to instrumentalize religion. His object was not only to engage with a given school catechism, but to offer an extensive polemic with the Church’s teaching, which kept Poles in a state of civic immaturity.

- Summary/Abstract:This article reconstructs the biography of Maria Franciszka Kozłowska, the founder of the Mariavite Order. She was declared 'accursed' by the bishops of the Catholic Church in Poland, as well as by the Holy See. The hierarchy objected to the revolutionary concept of the new congregation and the fact that it was to be led by a woman. Kozłowska’s case has become a subject of interest for writers. Today, her person and work can be placed within the realm of feminist theology.

- Summary/Abstract:The subject matter of the article is the story told by Maryla Wolska (1873–1930) about the dawn and inception of the Great War. The literary testimony of this experience and the source of my study is Wolska’s unpublished war diary and its first four entries from the second half of August 1914. In the article, I look into the textual ways of articulating the ongoing process of change from the world of peace into the world at war. I intend to demonstrate how the gradual identification of the new order as a renewed ceremony of sacrifice begins to permeate Wolska’s language and determine her diary narrative.

- Summary/Abstract:The text is devoted to Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski’s 'Mateusz Bigda' trilogy, first published in 1933, which revolves around the events of the Lanckorona Pact. In the first part of this interpretation, the author analyzes the encounter between the titular peasant protagonist (modeled on Wincenty Witos) and the institutions and milieu identified with the emerging democracy of the early interwar period. He attempts to uncover its hidden codes. He also considers the mechanisms and phenomena characteristic of interwar capitalism. The second part of the text compares Kaden’s novel with Władysław Reymont’s 'The Peasants'. The comparison of both works serves as a starting point for an attempt to outline the foundations of a broader social order derived from the peasant worldview and sense of order. This is achieved, among other things, by analyzing the metaphors of the 'other modernities'.

- Summary/Abstract:Alcohol abuse had constituted a serious social problem in the Czech lands since the Middle Ages, when the first initiatives aimed at publicly condemning and restricting drunkenness were undertaken. These efforts intensified in the 19th century, as alcoholism became a widespread affliction in Czech society. After 1918, the social anti-alcohol campaign gained additional momentum from the newly established independence of Czechoslovakia. It was at that time that the first Czech feature films devoted to alcoholism appeared: 'Battalion' ('Batalion', 1927) by Přemysl Pražský and 'Such Is Life' ('Takový je život', 1929) by Carl Junghans. These works resonated with the campaign insofar as they expanded social engagement with the problem of alcohol abuse into the sphere of a new medium – film – although the didactic zeal characteristic of the campaign did not play a central role in them. Pražský and Junghans presented alcoholism as a psychological, social, and medical problem, without overt moralizing about the harmfulness of alcohol.
