Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on a topic seldom discussed even if the limited reception of Stanisław Witkiewicz’s written output is taken into account. This painter, art critic, columnist (of 'Wędrowiec' ['The Wanderer'], among others), writer and creator of the Zakopane architectural style proved to be a particularly uncompromising critic of the Catholic Church’s social doctrine. It was no accident that Witkiewicz experienced difficulties with bringing his pamphlet out in print (and the publication in 'Reforma Szkolna' ['School Reform'] turned out to be a hard compromise with the demands of censorship). In it, he demonstrated how far the letter of the catechism is removed from the spirit of the Gospel. The author of 'Życie, etyka i rewolucja' ['Life, ethics and revolution'] challenged the tendency to instrumentalize religion. His object was not only to engage with a given school catechism, but to offer an extensive polemic with the Church’s teaching, which kept Poles in a state of civic immaturity.
