Summary/Abstract: The text is devoted to Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski’s 'Mateusz Bigda' trilogy, first published in 1933, which revolves around the events of the Lanckorona Pact. In the first part of this interpretation, the author analyzes the encounter between the titular peasant protagonist (modeled on Wincenty Witos) and the institutions and milieu identified with the emerging democracy of the early interwar period. He attempts to uncover its hidden codes. He also considers the mechanisms and phenomena characteristic of interwar capitalism. The second part of the text compares Kaden’s novel with Władysław Reymont’s 'The Peasants'. The comparison of both works serves as a starting point for an attempt to outline the foundations of a broader social order derived from the peasant worldview and sense of order. This is achieved, among other things, by analyzing the metaphors of the 'other modernities'.
