Summary/Abstract: Literary representations of the hotel in 19th century Polish literature form a distinctive diegetic sequence, highlighting the evolution of the Polish hotel motif, primarily in the works of Kraszewski, Norwid, Prus, Orzeszkowa, Żeromski, and Nałkowska. By focusing on the shaping and transformation of the identities of hotel managers and staff, the author presents the hotel as a place operating under the special laws of heightened psychocultural alienation, and as a meeting point, a metonymic cross-section, a modern ark of human fates, socially oriented or, oppositely, marginalized by society.
