Summary/Abstract: The subject matter of the article is the story told by Maryla Wolska (1873–1930) about the dawn and inception of the Great War. The literary testimony of this experience and the source of my study is Wolska’s unpublished war diary and its first four entries from the second half of August 1914. In the article, I look into the textual ways of articulating the ongoing process of change from the world of peace into the world at war. I intend to demonstrate how the gradual identification of the new order as a renewed ceremony of sacrifice begins to permeate Wolska’s language and determine her diary narrative.
