- Summary/Abstract:The novel “The Name of the Rose” is one possible way to travel through the real and imagined semiotic worlds of Umberto Eco. With the screen adaptation of the novel in 1986, Jean-Jacques Annaud urges the viewer to think of the relationships between text and image through the 1980s-fashionable figure of the palimpsest. Umberto Eco sees his novel as a labyrinth, implicitly insisting on the most complex type of labyrinth possible – the rhizome. A few decades later and Giacomo Battiato adapted Eco’s novel, this time as a television series. How the two figures – the palimpsest and the rhizome – participate in interpretation is a question that is the focus of the present article

- Keywords:word; visual image; literary culture; provincial avant-garde; visual poetry
- Summary/Abstract:The report presents a number of cases in the history of Bulgarian literature in which it becomes possible for the literary text itself, in its material objective form, to acquire the elements of an image. Case studies of the creative practice of the greatest Bulgarian writers are given in chronological order – from Peyo Yavorov and Pencho Slaveykov to Trifon Kunev and Geo Milev. As a form of convergence between word and visual image, are gestures from the Bulgarian literary culture, situations from the more marginal phenomena of the provincial avant-garde, and examples from the so-called visual poetry

- Summary/Abstract:I begin by examining the circumstances under which Sergei Eisenstein’s “Dickens, Griffith and Us” was written and published. Next, I highlight the varied reception of his hypothesis on the relationship between Griffith’s cinematic narrative and Dickens’s literary narration in film adaptation studies. I also point out the ideological bias and manipulations in his criticism of Griffith and the American film school. Finally, I underscore the tragic irony in Eisenstein’s quest to combine the principles of avant-garde montage cinema with the idols of socialist realism in his writing and in his film “Ivan the Terrible”.

- Author(s):Elka Traykova
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language studies, Theory of Literature
- Page Range:70-88
- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:sociocultural context; comedic culture; political satire; literary parodies; caricatures
- Summary/Abstract:The text presents fragments of the Bulgarian comedic culture that is constructed in “Balgaran” newspaper. The talented and the marginalized, but always scandalous and very popular creative manifestations that effectively blend language and image with elan, will be outlined. Disseminated like urban folklore and critically panned, the original humorous poems, witty parodies, mundane caricatures and cartoonish characters showcase characteristics of the amusingly entertaining, acutely satirical or jarringly grotesque depiction of the times. They are created by bright personalities who take the responsibility to bring together the elevated and the lowly in writing style, the elitist and the trivial in aesthetics, to equate the bohemian companies and the intellectual communities. Masterfully playing with language and image, their works reside in the range from dark warnings and merciless disclosures, to the exuberant celebration of carnivalesque and epicurean pleasures. This is precisely what establishes “Balgaran” as an institution that not only provokes literary practices and influences public opinion, but also lays the foundation of the Bulgarian comedic culture in the 20th century.

- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Fine Arts / Performing Arts, Film / Cinema / Cinematography
- Page Range:120-125

- Keywords:Keślowski; film metaphor; abstract cinema
- Summary/Abstract:The text examines Polish director Krzysztof Keślowski’s attempts to visually express the impossible and the abstract in several of his projects. The first is “Blind Chance”, which will define the variations of human behaviour reduced to their mysterious conditioning. The second is the TV series “Dekalog”, in which Keślowski conveys the meaning of the Ten Commandments of God across ten episodes. The third is the “Three Colours” trilogy, consisting of “Blue”, “White” and “Red”, where he uniquely interprets the concepts of liberty, equality, and fraternity embedded in the colours of the French flag. Keślowski “demeans” these concepts to very concrete contemporary stories with clear moral cases, but also “exalts” their philosophical meaning in vivid metaphors

- Keywords:comic; animation; moving image; deformation; transformation
- Summary/Abstract:In its wholeness, the comic does not rely solely on optical illusion to realize its effect on the reader. The consecutively arranged squares on the paper strip reflect certain phases of movement, almost always frozen in the most important, sublime moment. In this way, regardless of the lack of sequence of all the main, even all the key phases, the reader manages to reproduce in his mind the overall illusion of action. And even for the development of this action in time and space. It is supplemented with plans of different sizes, with the accumulation of specific sounds, with the created three-dimensional illusion for a more real perception of the action, etc. Most often it also contains a textual, explanatory version, in which the steps of the individual movements are traced to reach the final and complete action of the character in the frame. As well as lines of characters that reveal additional elements of narrative, emotions, aesthetic evaluations. Sometimes the text is complemented by imitative sounds that enhance the dynamics or emotion of the physical activity

The article examines the way in which this sensibility ‒ with a focus on visual imagery ‒ is conveyed in the Bulgarian translation of her novel “Die Unschärfe der Welt”. - Summary/Abstract:The role of the Grand Narrative in the 21st century is to tear itself apart into its component parts, the nomad narratives, through which it manifests itself to new generations of viewers, using the rhizomatic transmedia as its main tool to seduce, unravel, and peel off the digital repackage it presents itself with. As media turned digital, the momentary ideal picture of self-presentation by the Grand Narrative began to unfold. Transmedia is the postmodern device the Grand Narrative uses to its advantage to do it, while mimicking its own self-imposed crisis

The author purposefully manipulates historical facts to create a physical image of the poet-voivode, which will prove to be ideologically effective and necessary for the pantheon. Among the available photographs of Botev, he selects one that, contrary to the trivial fact, presents a different, higher “truth” about the hero

- Keywords:Robert Capa’s maxim; Magnum Photos Agency; photographic composition; decisive moment; war photographer
- Summary/Abstract:One of the most famous phrases in the history of photography states: “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you weren’t close enough”. The words come from the war photographer Robert Capa (1913 – 1954) and they are a big challenge for the next generations of photographers. Despite the fact that the maxim is associated with Capa’s inspiring and emotional photographs, the attitude towards his words is not unambiguous. The reason for this is that many military photographers take it as advice and risk too much in their work. The research analyses the context of the popular expression and looks for its projections and possible interpretations in the field of photographic expressiveness

Composed in two parts, I and II, written in different years (1928 and 1939), the text is inspired by a private photo of pretty female legs, known within the context of the critique, dedicated to Montale, as ‘the legs of Dora Markus’. Deliberately creating Hollywood myths or trying to destroy them, filmmakers are not only subject to subconscious impulses, but also deliberately replicate patterns such as that of justified and malicious aggression in all its forms. Their personification in the images of the Enemy brings out the contents of the collective unconscious and the “rationalized” interaction between verbal and non-verbal expression of the aestheticization of screen violence and aspects of fear

- Summary/Abstract:The article, dedicated to the broad topic of Saint George’s cult in European tradition, focuses on a fresco that has so far received little attention from art historians: “Saint George Slaying the Dragon” (1453), located on the southern outer wall of the sanctuary of Maria di Novezio, a small neighbourhood in the municipality of Cerete, in the province of Bergamo. The relationship between text and image is at the heart of the analysis: Saint George is the central element of the link within the complex web of intertextual references between the two artistic expressions. The fresco of Bergamo is interpreted not only in the light of its cultural context of origin, but also as a meeting point of different spiritual and cultural traditions: a new approach that could pave the way for unprecedented discoveries and perspectives in scientific and cultural research

- Keywords:representation; power; performativity; figurativity; soul; self
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the relationship between two categories in the texts of the Bulgarian poet Peyo Yavorov: representation and force. The representation is the ability of language to represent, i.e., to build images and to symbolize extratextual reality. It is expressed by the figurativity. The figure is a structure with two levels: one (literal) represents the other (figurative). The force in language, its performativity, lies in the energy of signification. It is non-representational. In Yavorov’s works, the representation and force are concretized by the self and the soul. The self is the pure force of the subject’s presence in the poet’s poems, while the soul reveals the perspective of the figurativity. Self and soul, power and representation are in a strange interplay. The self is the performative power of language to signify, but, in order to be recognized as presence, it needs the representation, the soul. At the end of the article, a new interpretation of the split of Yavorov’s works is presented

- Summary/Abstract:The text considers some intertextual and intermedial practices in which other (pictorial) pieces of art interfere in the history of a (literary) work – in absentia or in praesentia – and together participate in the “cycle” of the arts. It is also an attempt to illustrate the poetic theory of correspondences, as well as a reflection on the encounter with the other – the opposition between alter and ego – in the solitude of the creative act

- Author(s):Bogdana Paskaleva
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Fine Arts / Performing Arts, Visual Arts, History of Art
- Page Range:360-373
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:ekphrasis; style; movement; affect; pictorial dynamic
- Summary/Abstract:The study explores the role of ekphrasis in Ancient and Renaissance contexts. The central claim is based on the methodology of the German art critic and cultural scholar Aby Warburg (1886 – 1929), a forerunner of the tradition of iconology in visual studies. Thus, the study highlights those moments in the history of Western European painting that represent an intersection between the verbal and the visual. The practice of ekphrasis turns out to be that intermediary between the two, as well as between Antiquity and Renaissance, which determines not only the Renaissance’s interest in Antiquity on the level of pictorial subjects, but also explains some stylistic features of Renaissance images

While Leo Spitzer has played a key role in the popularization of the radical metamorphosis it has undergone since the late 19th century, interpretations of other scholars, notably Jean Hagstrum, Wendy Steiner, Murray Krieger, W. J. T. Mitchell and J. A. Heffernan, are not less interesting. The article defends Mitchell’s definition ‘verbal representation of visual representation’ and, based on it, proposes a presentation of the field of contemporary ekphrasis

- Summary/Abstract:Asian cinema skilfully deals with the screenplay of various textual samples from its own cultural field. The act of translation from the language of literature to the language of cinema/theatre on Western models is particularly provocative. It allows for original, daring, even surprising transformations of the original source. However, the tendency to preserve the cultural code remains. The present text focuses its attention on several examples, emphasizing through them the theoretical and cultural understanding of the problem of interpretation

The most popular and pragmatic application of the projection of the written text is in the form of theatre surtitles for translation, but often artists make use of its artistic potentiality as an active metacommentary on the scenic action

- Subject(s):Fine Arts / Performing Arts, Music
- Page Range:423-436
- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:New music; postmodernity; irony; multi-textuality; quasi-quotation; musical text; totalitarianism
- Summary/Abstract:“The Spotted Bird” [“Pastrata Ptitsa”] is the most vivid political protest in Bulgarian opera art at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. In this form of theatrе, Simeon Pironkov manages to intertwine satirical intent with an absurdist perspective on the communist system. Quotation and quasi-quotation hold a central place in the dramaturgy of the pluralistic and collage-style opera. The collage technique, quasi-quotations, allusions, and the interplay of meaning/ meaninglessness in the layering of text and music form the core of the composer’s language in “The Spotted Bird”. This connects Pironkov’s satirical opera to the tradition of music-theatrical works based on the idea of multi-textuality, such as Reiner Bredemeyer’s “Candide” (1982) in East Germany, György Ligeti’s “Le Grand Macabre” (1977), and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s “Die Soldaten” (1965), whose pluralistic language offers a novel, specific interpretation of opera. The language of “The Spotted Bird” is saturated with various types of quasiquotation. This enriches its dramaturgical layers with different kinds of metaphors and polytextuality, expressing Pironkov’s political protest. In “The Spotted Bird”, the composer employs quasi-quotations and allusions, with particular emphasis on parodying and quoting the language of officialdom. These elements also form the foundation of his vision for a music-theatre project infused with aspects of the “theatre of the absurd”. Pironkov’s project refers to his original concept of quasi-quotations, quasi-collages and allusions that with continuous disharmony/ irony parody and overlay the idioms of official opera and the musical vocabulary of socialist realism. The dramaturgical action in “The Spotted Bird” is constructed as a labyrinth of reflected/ideological meaning-games. In this opera, the composer brings to life a fantasy picture of political allegory: it is a parable about “The First” (the Sultan); the guards (the Politburo), the soldiers (State Security); the maidens, and a collective “image of the people”. The entire dramaturgical structure embodies “duality”. Thus, the labyrinthine construction of the opera’s action corresponds to the message of “duality”, the consubstantiality of the ideologeme. It is a kind of projection, an image/reflection of a futile dilemma, of the hopelessness of the ideological world. Consequently, both in structure and parody – on a linguistic level and in the parody of the genre itself – Pironkov creates an anti-utopian opera aimed against the totalitarian system. “The Spotted Bird” premiered on stage in 1980 in Ruse, followed by a performance in Sofia in 1981. It has not been staged since. Both the composer and thе conductor, as well as the director (Margarita Mladenova), were unequivocal and clear in their social and political message. The work stands as a significant phenomenon among dissident opuses and operas ridiculing communism and the totalitarian system in Eastern Europe

The possibility of image-text interactions is analysed in view of its dependence on artistic media interrelations. Referring to post-modern art forms such as happenings and readymades, Higgins tried to distinguish between intermedia and mixed media. Consequently, key aspects of his theory are commented upon. Particular emphasis is placed on visual poetry as an instance of image-text interaction. In the article, the term “media” is used to designate the expressive means of a given art
