Summary/Abstract: The article overviews the history of the concept of ekphrasis from the Antiquity to the present day, analysing the implications of the meanings attributed to it. While Leo Spitzer has played a key role in the popularization of the radical metamorphosis it has undergone since the late 19th century, interpretations of other scholars, notably Jean Hagstrum, Wendy Steiner, Murray Krieger, W. J. T. Mitchell and J. A. Heffernan, are not less interesting. The article defends Mitchell’s definition ‘verbal representation of visual representation’ and, based on it, proposes a presentation of the field of contemporary ekphrasis
