Summary/Abstract: The text presents fragments of the Bulgarian comedic culture that is constructed in “Balgaran” newspaper. The talented and the marginalized, but always scandalous and very popular creative manifestations that effectively blend language and image with elan, will be outlined. Disseminated like urban folklore and critically panned, the original humorous poems, witty parodies, mundane caricatures and cartoonish characters showcase characteristics of the amusingly entertaining, acutely satirical or jarringly grotesque depiction of the times. They are created by bright personalities who take the responsibility to bring together the elevated and the lowly in writing style, the elitist and the trivial in aesthetics, to equate the bohemian companies and the intellectual communities. Masterfully playing with language and image, their works reside in the range from dark warnings and merciless disclosures, to the exuberant celebration of carnivalesque and epicurean pleasures. This is precisely what establishes “Balgaran” as an institution that not only provokes literary practices and influences public opinion, but also lays the foundation of the Bulgarian comedic culture in the 20th century.
