Summary/Abstract: The novel “The Name of the Rose” is one possible way to travel through the real and imagined semiotic worlds of Umberto Eco. With the screen adaptation of the novel in 1986, Jean-Jacques Annaud urges the viewer to think of the relationships between text and image through the 1980s-fashionable figure of the palimpsest. Umberto Eco sees his novel as a labyrinth, implicitly insisting on the most complex type of labyrinth possible – the rhizome. A few decades later and Giacomo Battiato adapted Eco’s novel, this time as a television series. How the two figures – the palimpsest and the rhizome – participate in interpretation is a question that is the focus of the present article
