Etnografski muzeji/zbirke i konstrukcija identiteta

Author(s): Ljiljana Gavrilović / Language(s): Serbian Publication Year: 0

This paper discusses museum theory and the local museum practice as factors building in construction/re-construction of an identity at various levels, including an individual, minority groups, and dominant cultural, socio-economic group. Furthermore, the paper assesses the role of museum in preventing/including certain social groups/categories toward access to culture as a means of social stratification, and in addition, possibilities of alteration of that same role toward more active participation of a museum in its social surroundings, in accordance with the new museum paradigm. Especially emphasized is an analysis of the role and meaning of ethnographic museums/collections in the process of shaping national/ethnic identities and further possibilities of inclusion of minorities, absent from the usual practice. This refers to the acquisition of objectsbelonging to a minority group, and on the other hand, to their underpresentation, which indicates a cultural segregation.

Semiotics, image and narration. 12-th Early Fall School in Semiotics

Author(s): / Language(s): English

It is by now a tradition that the intellectual efforts of the participants at the Early Fall School in Semiotics (EFSS), organized annually by the Southeast Center for Semiotic Studies (SEECSS) at the New Bulgarian University, result in a collection of selected papers. The present volume in English and French is an outcome of the XIIth edition of the EFSS on "Semiotics, Image and Narration", held in 2006 in the town of Sozopol. It is formally divided into two parts, containing texts by 'guest lecturers' from our partner Universities in Finland, Italy and USA, as well as by 'local participants' - professors and students at the New Bulgarian University. From parchments to paper and from print to the internet, "the story of humankind has been written, and will be written upon its virtual walls" (Albertson, 1997). In the new millennium we are ever more surrounded by bulletin boards and computer networks, from advertisement banners to cyberspace. Nowadays humankind learns by watching rather than by reading or being lectured to. In order to be considered literate in the information age, the new literate person needs to be media literate as well as being proficient in literature and arithmetic.

Ларп културата: между и отвъд

Author(s): Angelina Ilieva / Language(s): Bulgarian

This text is a monographic study of live action role-playing games (commonly called larp games): a type of games played live, in physical space, and through the immediate, active interaction between players. The study explores two directions, elaborated in its two parts, each with its own specific focus, goals, and scope. The first part focuses on games in culture; the second, on games as culture. The first part presents the various types of role-playing games, their functions in cultures, and the cultural traditions inherited by them. The second part contains a detailed analysis of a local gaming culture—the Bulgarian one—through its constituting aspects of form (the game), processes (playing), and actors (players). The first part places role-playing games within the scope of anthropology and examines them through the comparative perspective typical of cultural anthropology. We deduce and substantiate six functions of larp games from a theoretical and philosophical standpoint. The ritual function breaks the quotidian rhythm of life, changes the commonplace structures and relationships, engenders a markedly “other” (albeit temporary) reality, which imposes uncommon types of behavior. The narrative function is an aspect of players’ subjective perceptions, of their direct involvement in the story, simultaneously creating it and experiencing it in an unmediated manner. The escapist function is portrayed, not only as a possible “escape from reality, ” but also as a romanticist criticism of modern reality. The educational function considers the uses of games for the practical acquisition and accumulation of knowledge and skills, but also for exploring ideologies, suggesting or provoking particular values, and shaping worldviews. The therapeutic function focuses on the notion of ‘catharsis, ’ as a healthy psychological and emotional release for both individual players and the group/community as a whole. The expressive function defines playing as a method for individual and collective expression, a medium with the potential to make art forms. We explore the evolution and varieties of the genre larp game as it has been interpreted and enacted on various regional playing scenes: in North America, Great Britain, France, Germany, Scandinavia. We examine the principles of avant-garde Nordic larp as a specific design ideology insistent on authentic experience, artistic storytelling, and topicality in the games it constructs. We describe the major traits of the Eastern European larp scenes, with an emphasis on the unique Russian larp culture. The second part defines Bulgarian larp culture through five groups off actors: 1) genesis and main trends; 2) basic structures and interactions established on a meta-gaming level; 3) values and norms shared by the players; 4) actual or latent conflicts and crises; 5) impact of other forms of games or other larp cultures. At first, we analyze the game as a jointly generated reality, consisting of various layers and levels: the material environment of objects and the language describing it; the individual perception and performance of a role; social structures and interactions. Next, we examine playing as a communication process: playing with meaning, the cultural “languages” of interaction, and the participants’ subjective interpretations of game events, expressed through stories. Finally, we present the social structuring of the Bulgarian larp scene as a community of clans and analyze the unique social world of larp players. The conclusion highlights certain significant sociocultural trends in the contemporary world, reflected in the culture of role-playing games: modern people’s propensity for ‘playing’ with reality, creating and inhabiting alternative worlds; the ever growing need to engage with the world actively and experience it fully, the increasing importance of direct personal experience; the specific attitude towards artistic content and art as a whole, the everyday need for artistic expression.

On the origin of species by means of civilization or the preservation of favoured races in the cooperation for life

Author(s): Konstantinos Maritsas / Language(s): English

Charles Darwin: The founder of the theory of natural selection declared that he was a believer till 1859, when his well-known book The Origin of Species was published. After his death, in 1882, he was honoured by a burial in the Westminster Abbey. However, as his notes prove, he had never thought of betraying science for the sake of religious reasons. He had already written in 1838 that: “The great break in the organic chain between man and his nearest allies, which cannot be bridged over by any extinct or living species, has often been advanced as a grave objection to the belief that man is descended from some lower form; but this objection will not appear of much weight to those who, from general reasons, believe in the general principle of evolution”. This “great break” between men and animals, between Civilization and Natural Selection: this is what we shall make an effort to bridge over in this book.

Neizliječena trauma: rad na ozdravljenju i izgradnji mira

Author(s): / Language(s): Bosnian

On computer creativity. Machine learning and the arts of artificial intelligences

On computer creativity. Machine learning and the arts of artificial intelligences

Author(s): Andreas Sudmann / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In the debates on artificial intelligence (AI), one objection against attributing creativity to computers has been raised regularly for decades. It is based on the claim that they can only execute what has been designed and programmed by humans. However, already the General Problem Solver, developed by Allen Newell, John C. Shaw, and Herbert A. Simon, in the second half of the 1950s did not define every state of its system a priori, but linked the occurrence of rules to the conditions of their applicability (Newell et al., 1959). So-called machine learning methods, however, go a considerable step further in this respect. Their central characteristic is that they enable computers to master different tasks (automatically) without in principle being explicitly programmed to do so (Samuel, 1959). Among the existing approaches to machine learning, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have given the research field of AI a new upswing after many years of stagnation. Whenever innovations in AI have been discussed in the last ten years or so, whether with reference to self-driving cars, to the prediction of stock market prices or to the field of medical diagnostics, ANNs were always involved (Sudmann, 2018).

The Artist and the Subway

The Artist and the Subway

Author(s): Heejae Kim,Daniel Kurz / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

For both visitors and natives, the geography of New York City can be challenging to navigate. Literally divided into dozens of islands, with its only mainland connection via The Bronx, the Five Boroughs present different kinds of landmasses that millions experience daily—living in, visiting, escaping from, transiting, and utilizing them. Not only has the Subway System become a key aspect and symbol of New York’s culture, but it has also become infamous on a national scale. Uniting all since the early 1900s has been the Subway System, which continues to inspire, frustrate, challenge, alienate and envelop modern artists of every kind to his day. Through various sources and the thoughts/words of postwar artists Yoko Ono, Ellie Kayu Ng, Keith Haring, and James Yang, we have explored the New York Subway and its openness for interpretation. Out of countless post-war artists who have included the Subway in their artwork, we have chosen to compare and contrast a few artists who have utilized the subway in differing ways in their art. The Subway System has been depicted and interpreted in countless ways to communicate its promise, aesthetic, democratic spirit, kinetics and, of course, connectivity. Ultimately, we have come to the conclusion that Subway can be interpreted in endless ways, allowing artists to form differing views, feelings, and meanings from the same subject, in this case, the Subway.

A Value Theory of Art

A Value Theory of Art

Author(s): Julia M. Puaschunder / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Price is the hallmark in economics. Discounting under growing uncertain risk over time dominates finance. While finance structures objective measures to perceive price patterns and market trends, it is striking to have no theory of what art becomes more valuable over time. As there is no value theory of arts, we have no structured knowledge about what and how arts become more valuable over time. As for the growing importance of arts as an economic multiplier and systemically-widespread collateral, the need for discounting arts’ future value has gained unprecedented momentum [1]. Solving the question of why some arts survive, and particular art pieces become more valuable over time could help integrate discounting elements in classic public goods theory in welfare economics that focuses on creating lasting common value over time.
