Dyskurs medyczny a przekład naukowych tekstów medycznych

The paper discusses lexico-syntactic and discourse features of medical texts published in scientific medical journals with high Impact Factor and, based on these, it presents some implications for translators of medical texts. The features of medical discourse are analysed with the aid of Coh-Metrix, which is a computer program used for language analysis, and Raygor Estimate, which is a readability test. The theoretical framework applied to the study involves the descriptive translation studies (Touri, 1995) and the skopos theory (Vermeer, 1982). The analysis shows that a translator of medical texts should: (1) resort to lexis and syntactic structures of low variety, and (2) adjust the translated text to the readability level and editorial requirements of a specific journal.

The article presents the results of a research conducted among 12 deaf people and 11 Polish sign language interpreters, aimed at depicting the state-of-the-art situation of sign language interpreting in Poland while it simultaneously reflects upon the past as well. The interviewees reported on the changes in this area over the last twenty-five years. According to them, situation in Poland has improved significantly with regard to language, interpreting as such, legal-administrative and social issues. Still, in many respects sign language interpreting needs further improvement in order to attain full accessibility for deaf persons as well as full professionalisation for sign language interpreters

Adapt or Perish: How Forced Transition to Remote Simultaneous Interpreting during the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Interpreters’ Professional Practices

This article discusses the results of a survey carried out among 132 simultaneous interpreters with Polish as their working language, summarising their professional experience during the first 10 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the context of the forced transition to the remote mode of simultaneous interpreting and the related technical and organisational challenges, this survey captured the early experience of working remotely (mostly from home), as well as the adaptations necessitated by the new situation in terms of changes in working modalities and tools, particularly in the home environment. The article also presents the surveyed interpreters’ expectations regarding the role and place of remote simultaneous interpreting in their future professional practices.

The aim of the present article is to describe multilingual interactions at the XIII Jarosław Dąbrowski International Brigade between volunteers of different nationalities, mainly Poles, and the Spanish population as narrated by Boruch Nysembaum, a communist from Warsaw and a participant of the Spanish Civil War. At the same time, it is the first presentation of onthe- spot memoirs written by a volunteer who did not return from this war. On the basis of his narrative, the article tries to answer the questions concerning the way volunteers, who lacked adequate foreign language skills, communicated with the Spanish population and with other volunteers, the forms of their communications, and finally, the specific characteristics of this multilingual communication.

Catholic priests who were practicing artistic creativity, mostly poets, in the Czech lands, formed a group called the Catholic Modern in the nineteenth century. Jakub Deml, a Czech priest, poet, and writer from Moravia, was in close contact with the group. His works were not always positively received by concurrent readers, but today he is considered a precursor of contemporary literary trends, especially surrealism. This article presents a portrait of one of the most original Czech writers of the first half of the twentieth century. The text also takes into account the issue of the Polish translation of his work Zapomenuté svĕtlo (Forgotten Light) by Andrzej Czcibor-Piotrowski and published in Wołow in 2000 by the Czarne Publishing House.

The paper focuses on Ukrainian and Russian translations of Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence, published in 1989 and 1990. The framework for the analysis is provided by Loren Glass’s idea of a significant role of obscene vocabulary in the aesthetics of the twentieth-century Anglo-American literary modernism. The comparison of the two translations shows significant differences in the translators’ approaches to rendering Lawrence’s sexual-based language.

The aim of the paper is to carry out a comparative analysis of the Polish translation of one of the most important Croatian modernist dramas A Trilogy of Dubrovnik. Ivo Vojnović’s text from 1900 was translated into Polish relatively quickly. Its first excerpts were published as early as 1904. The translation of the entire text by Helena d’Abancourt de Franqueville appeared in the periodical “Przegląd Polski” in 1906, and the book version was published in 1910. In the same year, the play was also staged in the theatre. The article focuses primarily on the problem of the performability of the translation, understood as a reflection of theatrical signs encrypted in the source text and visible in the translation, and shows what translation difficulties are associated with it.

General interest in teenage books has been upsurging because of films based on international best-sellers. Therefore, the scripture becomes a source of language, in a sense that youngsters learn new words, phrases, allusions or metaphors and incorporate them in their everyday language. Demand for popular reads requires a quick reaction translating these books as there are plenty of novels for young adults written in foreign languages. However, translation of adolescent fiction is a challenging task due to the use of slang and other colloquial vocabulary or stylistic devices. However, the translation of stylistic devices as such has not been researched since linguists focus on teen slang. The translation of stylistic devices is an interesting issue to deal with as the entire translation “eco-system” is observed not from one sentence or paragraph perspective. The research deals with stylistic devices and their translation and the analysis of translation. It also presents stylistic devices according to their types, each type is illustrated by one or two examples depending on the number found, their translation and explanation of its aim, used strategy and achieved results are provided.

The article considers certain features in the learning of cognate Languages exemplified by a translation of a Serbian text into Croatian. Deviations from a precise and successful translations into Croatian are analysed taking into consideration the monolingual and bilingual speakers. One group consists of bilingual speakers to whom Croatian is L2 from the communication point of view although it is their mother tongue, Serbian being their environmental, school and communicative L 1. The other group consists of the speakers to whom Croatian is the mother tongue and the main communication language, and have not learned Serbian. The same and the different features of their translations are considered. Although the groups of subjects are small, this research nevertheless shows that the translations differ depending on L 1.

STUDENT AGENCY IN TRANSLATOR TRAINING: SETTING A FRAMEWORK FOR GOOD PRACTICES

Both teacher and student agency have been discussed and researched for quite some time in different learning contexts. Here, I will present a general framework for pedagogical practices that enhance translator education by promoting student agency defined as the process through which learners become capable of strategic actions which form the basis for autonomy and confidence in their own proficiency and effectiveness. I will suggest how student agency and collaborative and situated learning can interact to provide students with professional and relational skills that set the basis for the development of autonomous strategic learning. This combined approach involves the acceptance and use of planned and spontaneous learning opportunities embedded in contextualised activities, tasks, and projects. Some practical examples will illustrate the main points.

This article presents a proposal for a unidirectional bilingual glossary (Spanish-Bulgarian) of the most frequently used notary terms and collocations in testate succession field. The author will begin with a brief contextualization on the similarities and differences between the Notary institution and the concept of testate succession, based on the legislations of the States concerned. Next, the particularities of notarial language as one of the sublanguages of the Spanish and Bulgarian legal languages will be described. The glossary building process will be explained later, emphasis is placed on the main difficulties encountered and the solutions provided in this paper. Finally, a global reflection applicable to development of other support materials in legal terminology will be offered.

The article describes the possibilities offered by the parallel corpus InterCorp in the process of translating Polish metaoperators into Russian and searches in the texts the analogous Russian word constructions. The author raises the problem of the interpretation of such concepts as reproduct, multiword unit and phrase in the publications of Polish linguists who more often emphasize the need to define the above-mentioned units by mono and multilingual dictionaries. The article refers to the metaoperators proposed by Wojciech Chlebda, which are used as an auxiliary tool in the search process from reproducible texts of multiword units. The possibilities and resources of Polish and Russian collections included in the InterCorp corpus were described, and then selected meta-operators of various categories were analyzed. The article examines the reasons for the emergence of interest in ancient Indian religious and philosophical texts in the Russian cultural sphere, as well as the ways in which Indian texts entered Russian literature. The aim of this article is to show how the first Russian translations of the most influential ancient Indian works, such as Bhagavadgita or Shakuntala, caused the appearance of a large number of works in Russian literature that in one way or another refer to ancient Indian texts. The article also shows how Russian writers referred to ancient Indian texts in their works, using examples of particular writings.

Broadcast Stand-up Comedy and Its Translation

With the rise of new platforms of media consumptions, aided by new digital technologies, wider audiences and a growing demand for translated materials, new audiovisual transfer modes have surfaced and with them the field of AVT “has grown exponentially, parallel to the production, consumption, interaction with and general interest in audiovisual products” [Chaume 2018: 41]. Stand-up comedy usually thrives as a live form of art. However, digital consumption has allowed comedians to reach a global audience via recording and broadcasting of their performances, and by doing so, it warranted the translation of the genre. In this study, after investigating how the audiovisual format affects comedians’ performances and their subtitling into Italian, I propose new, potentially useful concepts for a translational analysis of broadcast stand-up. Included is a discussion of the presence of audiovisual elements in the streamed specials and an inquiry of the fictionality of the scripted dialogue.

DIDACTICS OF TRANSLATION IN THE CONTEXT OF E-LEARNING COURSES: APPROACHES AND PERSPECTIVES

The objective of the article is to discuss pedagogical approaches to translator training performed within the electronic educational space that connects instructors and students in pandemic times by means of E-learning courses. Having been removed from the classrooms, translation didactics has become more challenging because its traditional methodology includes shared experiences as a basis of instruction, best practices exchange, reciprocal learning and professional networking during the contact hours. Communication of obtained experience in translation is an essential part of translator training, and it involves all the stages of translation process: strategies of comprehending source texts, comparative discourse analysis, reflection on how translation decisions are made, and motivation in translation matches selection. Under these circumstances, the design of E-learning translation courses should be in compliance with the needs of students and instructors that go far beyond the traditional functions of learning management systems such as providing training materials and upload assignments. This work is a case study based on E-learning MOODLE courses developed for students of Irkutsk National Research Technical University pursuing undergraduate studies of translation for specific purposes. Initially, they were developed as additional implements to bolster students' classroom activities aimed mainly at assessing students' knowledge with tests, collecting and storing individual student or group assignments, and maintaining students' performance logs. After pandemic rethinking, it became necessary for them to meet a greater spectrum of pedagogical demands, so they were restructured. Based on this experience, the work outlines didactic models of translator training and their applicability to online mode of instruction, elaborates on the principles of translation E-Learning course design, describes the use of MOODLE instruments to perform the tasks of translation instruction, estimates their effectiveness, and suggest perspectives for further research.

Within the framework of EXTEND project Erasmus+ KA2 Capacity Building in Higher Education Project EXTEND 586060-EPP-1-2017-1-RO-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP "Excellence in Engineering Education through Teacher Training and New Pedagogic Approaches in Russia and Tajikistan" it is planned to elaborate innovative courses to enhance the quality of engineering education in Russia and Tajikistan. Inasmuch as foreign languages are included in transversal competences for engineering education, special attention was given to the elaboration of the "Foreign Languages for Engineering. Academic Writing" course. A foreign language is considered as a means of professional competence forming and is included in the main competences of engineers of XXI century. The course consists of five modules having the similar structure: "Reading and Speaking", "Writing", "Listening", "Translation Basics", Academic Writing", "Assessment" and "Bank of Prompts". The content of the modules is universal for any branch of engineering, as it touches upon such topics as affiliation and self-presentation, safety at working place, dimensions, working with drawings, career strategy, team building, engineering branches, etc. Special attention is given to academic writing, as it is obligatory for contemporary PhD students and university teachers to publish their scientific papers and disseminate the results of their researches at the international level. Learners are taught to write their research papers according to the IMRaD model. Moreover, academic writing is correlated with a listening part, supplementing it with practical tips. "Bank of Prompts" is aimed at equipping learners with linguistic cultural background information, which is necessary for communication and translation. The paper describes the piloting experiment, thus complex methodology is applied.

Konotacije leksičkog sloja motiva stida u engleskim prijevodima bošnjačke balade “Hasanaginica”

Translating a work of literary art, especially poetry, also means translating its style. At the lexico-stylistic level, style manifests itself in both denotative and connotative meanings of the lexical units of a text. By analyzing the connotations of the lexical layer of shame motif in English translations of Bosniak ballad “Hasanaginica”, we can identify and problematize the interpretation of this motif in the target texts in relation to the source text. Applying the method of lexico-stylistic analysis to the key verses of the shame motif, both in the source text and in the target texts in English, we examine the ways in which different translators build the mystical motif as the only abstract concept that never develops into a poetic image, leaving space for multi-layered connotations that are imposed on the reader. The results of the analysis point to the translations that are closest to the source text in terms of containing minimal differences in the degree of their interpretive limitation or intrusiveness. The most vividly evoked key verse of the shame motif is found in Francis Jones’ translation. However, the final vocabulary choice made by a discerning translator possessing a high degree of stylistic awareness should also be influenced by other aspects of the original text, such as its established rhythmic pattern or meter that requires preservation and other formal characteristics of this ballad, which are not to be found in Jones’ translation. Therefore, our conclusion is that the results of lexico-stylistic analysis of the original should be weighed against the results of analysis on other linguo-stylistic levels of expression (phonostylistic and syntaxostylistic) in order to synthesize them as successfully as possible, which could help recreate a new, more effective and reliable translation of this masterpiece of our oral literature.

The problem of power is to be found at the core at the social imaginary, being a necessity for all societies, generating the invention and the imagination of legitimacy that need to be given to power. Every power is a force, but it has to become legitimate. Circumstances and events that legitimate a power are equal as importance with the imaginary that created them and with the representations around the power. The social institutions, together with the politic, economic, cultural or any other type of institutions, participate to the symbolic universe around them and form their own functioning frame. Due to its representations and symbols, the social imaginary is a real and efficacious part from the mass control mechanism. The social representations express a state of the social group; translate its actual structure, the thinking of its members and their reactions to various events, exterior danger or violent burst. The problem of establishing The Centre is highlighted inside the relation between two identities, when, starting from the Own Centre and the Other Centre, the real Reference centre is designated, as the Centre of the most powerful one, to which the Weak centre will conform and accept as source of universal organisation. Once recognised, the power protects its legitimacy against the Other and establishes its own decor of social life, represented by emblems, ornaments, accessories etc. The social produces, crossing a network of denotations, numerous marks to help the individual communicating and designates its relations with the institutions, The social life produces values, norms and representation systems that adapt and fix the representations. Thus, there are collective codes depending for expressing needs and expectations, hopes and fears. The importance of the symbols and of the representations differs from one type of power to another.
