Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses lexico-syntactic and discourse features of medical texts published in scientific medical journals with high Impact Factor and, based on these, it presents some implications for translators of medical texts. The features of medical discourse are analysed with the aid of Coh-Metrix, which is a computer program used for language analysis, and Raygor Estimate, which is a readability test. The theoretical framework applied to the study involves the descriptive translation studies (Touri, 1995) and the skopos theory (Vermeer, 1982). The analysis shows that a translator of medical texts should: (1) resort to lexis and syntactic structures of low variety, and (2) adjust the translated text to the readability level and editorial requirements of a specific journal.
