Swojskość i utrata. Obrazy Górnego Śląska w literaturze polskiej i czeskiej po 1989 roku

Author(s): Karolina Pospiszil - Hofmańska / Language(s): Polish

The aim of the book is to represent and to analyze the most important elements of literary depictions of Upper Silesia in the latest Polish and Czech literature. The author applies the methodology connected with special turn and tries to represent the fullest analysis of the representations of the region in question. She analyses a several dozens of literary texts and texts of culture (in broad understanding of this term) trying to answer, among others, the following questions: how Upper Silesia is represented in literature, why was it so late that somebody got interested in the region and whether there is any Silesian model of writing. The book consists of three parts. The first of them is devoted to spatial turn and the possibilities that it opens for literary studies. The most important trends in contemporary thinking about space are depicted, including those which had anticipated the special turn. The author concentrates mostly on those methodologies that she calls “geo-tools”, that is: geopoetics (in its specifically Polish understanding), literary geography and a few of its variants and on geocriticism. An important trend in this part of reflection upon space and its connections with culture is new regionalism. The author, while discussing this important for literature concerning Silesia phenomenon, attempts to represent the most important definitions of region and regionalism as well as to point toward a few research possibilities opened by new regionalism. The second part of the dissertation concentrates on “imagined space-time continua” of Silesia. The author depicts the borders of Silesia and its parts on the basis of several historical and geographic publications, proceeding toward the 20th-century imaginations of Silesia depicted not only on the basis of literary texts. The third part is devoted mostly to literary texts in Polish and Czech and the representations of Upper Silesia which are given in this literature. According to the author, the literary images of Upper Silesia are fragmentary and incomplete and most of them concentrates on a few central categories: home/familiarity (borderland, multiculturality, multilingualism, roots, the feeling of being at home), death/loss (language, memory, relatives, identity, “the old Silesia”, greenness (greenness in the city, parks, forests, agriculture) and blackness (industry, cities, pollution, poisoning, mourning).

W stronę nieoczywistości. Teksty różne

Author(s): Filip Mazurkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

The volume comprises indeed twelve miscellaneous texts representing various research idioms ranging from hermeneutics through intertextuality all the way to deconstruction and poststructural reading, as well as various themes which include: two texts each, devoted to the works of Teodor Parnicki and Witold Gombrowicz, pop culture-related problems (plastic survery and pornography), cultural and political issues (the problem of Polish socialism), the dialogues of the author with his masters within the framework of literary studies (Ryszard Legutko and Stefan Szymutko), and finally the questions of19-century Polish masculinity and the considerations about the condition of the contemporary university in Poland. According to the author, the most important texts are the ones which refer to Parnicki, who is presented as a writer of existence, as a writer of reality – a reality which is always too complex and unbearable ultra vires. Another important group of texts are the ones which discuss Gombrowicz. The interpretations of one of Gombrowicz’s stories that is presented here (Zdarzenia na brygu Banbury) and the final dramatic work of the writer (Operetka) are original: Gombrowicz is placed in the space of a debate between the work andthe text, where Gombrowicz becomes the supporter of the text, thus preventing the reader from making an interpretative move, as well as a reading of Operetka as a dramatic work about some new masculinity (known as atopical masculinity) which is possible in a somehow different way, presented on the basis of references to A la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust. These two aspects heretofore were never researched. The texts which this publication contains present such modes of reading which emphasise the unobvious and the complexity of the phenomena that are described. There are also texts in which the author attempts to take a quasi oblique look into the existing state of research and the state of reflection concerning the questions which are engaged here.

Poetyckie doświadczanie religii. Tadeusz Kijonka, Stanisław Krawczyk, Jerzy Szymik

Author(s): Dominik Chwolik / Language(s): Polish

In his work, the author discusses the issues of the religious sphere associated with every human being and their everyday existence, regardless of the different doctrines or points of view. Furthermore, these issues find their way into literature which aims at reflecting human life. Such poetic experience of religion can be seen in the works of Tadeusz Kijonka, Stanisław Krawczyk and pr. Jerzy Szymik on which the author based his research. The author reviews the classic religious study works, such as the theories of Rudolf Otto, William James or Mircea Eliade who view the contact with the sacrum through the prism of the feelings associated with it. Given, however, the distant time of the theories’ development, the author does not abstain from mentioning other deliberations resulting from the poets’ inveteracy in the Catholic thought circles. The poems by Kijonka contain references to JohnPaul II, whereas the theology of Benedict XVI is significant when attempting to interpret the works of Szymik. The three aforementioned poets, although associated with Silesia (with its’ traces visible in their works) do not represent, in the authors’ view, the ‘Silesian religiousness’ stream. It does, however, serve the purpose of evoking that which is universal or it may become a pretext to reflect upon experiencing the sacrum and profanum. While analyzing the work of Kijonka, the author points out, above all, the contrast between the faith of a trusting child and that of a doubtful adult (which is to be understood as a reflection of the struggle with reality). The poet often returns in his memories to his childhood, irreversibly lost (as the past Christmas) once the border (of the forest or city) is crossed. In his works, an adult is depicted as someone who feels abandoned and looks at the sky expecting a miracle. They yearn to return to the distant past or even to the heavenly state. God, in Kijonkas’ writings, is both close and distant. The author of Time, places and words (org. Czas, miejsca i słowa) deals with the matters of one’s body, sickness (even his own one) and death, as well as with the image of the mother (both earthly and heavenly — Mary). In the chapter devoted to Krawczyk, the author discusses the issue of a man standing in the centre of a world undergoing destruction, where the surface resembles a volcanic landscapeand the protagonist wanders in search of faith. In his poems, the poet dwells upon the matters of the mystery of the interrelation of both man and God (the incarnation of Christ, co‑experience of suffering), the human fate and ‑ what is significant ‑ the mysteryof his own (the creators’) ‘self’. He performs a self‑evaluation. In Vowels and colours (org. Samogłoski i kolory), Krawczyk focuses also on the intriguing, incorporated in the religious codes of his poetry, thread of the woman (through the comparison of his wife and Eve from the paradise). The last section of this thesis is associated with the wor of Jerzy Szymik. The author especially focuses on the prospect of the man continuously getting nearer to God through everyday life, as portrayed by the priest‑poet.Included in the work of Szymik are the categories of suffering (Incarnation and its mystery, similar to Krawczyk), sickness (similar to Kijonka — his own state), death, but also priesthood, the Resurrection and even common, everyday events. The description of the image of Mary or the references to journeys, both local ones to Pszów or Lublin and more distant ones to Italy or the United States, are not different. The author of Gods’patience (org. Cierpliwość Boga) notes a remarkable relation between the sacrum and profanum (the example of the temple and the city). When it comes to the Creator himself, Szymik refers to him as Love, after Ratzinger.Religious experiences, in the view of the author of the thesis, permeate the poetry of Tadeusz Kijonka, Stanisław Krawczyk and Jerzy Szymik regardless of their own beliefs or the similarities and differences one can find between them. This is due to the fact thatthey are associated with something greater ‑ the personal struggle undertook by the poets which we can find reflected in their works. The doctoral thesis was created under the supervision of Professor Marian Kisiel.

„Swój urząd czynić”. Profil obywatelski twórczości Jana Kochanowskiego

Author(s): Krystyna Płachcińska / Language(s): Polish

Throughout his whole writing career, Jan Kochanowski continuously addressed the issue of citizenship, applying various literary genres and expressing his beliefs in both Polish and Latin. The issue was rooted in the ideological foundation constituting the constans within his views: on the value of virtue, moderation and serving one’s country, and thus, it was deeply embedded in axiology and ethics. Paradoxically, however, it was conducted simultaneously to his intense economic operations, which turned the indigent heir to half of Czarnolas into a wealthy man, at the end of his days. Kochanowski’s civic-oriented works stretch between the tools of lyrics and rhetoric, and yet any action taken for the benefit of public welfare requires concrete solutions and a properly channelled driving force. In such cases, the main role of literature is not to express the author’s feelings, but to inculcate beliefs and emotions in his audience. And the quality of any given civic-oriented literary work is measured by its effectiveness. This also begs the question about the subjectively and objectively comprehended validity of the propagated opinions. Firstly, did the poet perceive as congruent with actual public interest (which was always explicitly declared) the resulting actions which any given work provoked? Secondly, was this perception sound? Thus, we inquire about effectiveness (here, tantamount to beauty), about persuasive integrity, and finally, about the author’s wisdom. This is the specific look at Jan of Czarnolas that the book offers.

W cieniu ojca. Awangarda prozatorska lat 30. XX wieku. Rudnicki, Napierski, Schulz, Tarn

Author(s): Magdalena Wasąg / Language(s): Polish

Adolf Rudnicki, Stefan Napierski, Bruno Schulz, and Adam Tarn debuted as authors of prose in the 1930s. In their works they all took the complex subject of the father’s image. Interwar literary critique included these debuts in avant-garde literature, which was strongly influenced by Sigmund Freud’s concept of psychoanalysis and Ulysses by James Joyce. The psychologism that was noticed in Rudnicki’s Rats, in Napierski’s Conversation with the Shadow in Schulz’s stories, and in Tarn’s The image of the father in four frames was criticized at that time. Today, the interpretation of these avant-garde prose projects allows us to see their more general, intention. This monograph significantly reinterprets avant-garde projects which were distinguished by their innovative language and narrative forms. In historical and literary terms, it aims to show a more faithful, multifaceted image of the interwar period, in which in addition to “traditional literature” there will be space for a novel experiment. Until now, the relationship between the works of Rudnicki, Napierski, Schulz and Tarn has not been noticed and it is in the works of these writers of Jewish origin that the ideas about the father, refer to tradition. The prose debuts of Rudnicki, Napierski, Schulz and Tarn have become a kind of timeless question: Will avant-garde literary projects create a new man, a son not burdened by the “father’s shadow”, by a “blemish” of his origins. In the interwar period, for Jewish writers, this was a particularly important question, and it affects every text interpreted in this monograph to varying degrees.

The Experience of Faith in Slavic Cultures and Literatures in the Context of Postsecular Thought

Author(s): / Language(s): English

The book contains reflections on the diversified religious experience expressed in the culture and literature of the Slavic region. We can say that Slavic religious experience is “messy”, but maybe it is better to say this is Slavic experience of modernity that is “messy”. Bearing in mind that ‘Slavic experience’ is only a metaphor – a mental shortcut – we should remember that it is torn between the specificity of the local context and the Western-centric unification. Reflection on specific features of local religious experiences and examining this phenomenon in the context of global processes enriches knowledge of modernity and its relation to secularization and desecularization. If modernity is defined broadly and universally, then studies on ‘small cultures’ can go beyond the traditional interpretative ‘pattern – copy’ or ‘center – periphery’ models.
