Cahier pratique de syntaxe française

Cahier pratique de syntaxe française

Author(s): Christophe Cusimano / Language(s): French

This handbook introduces some knotty notions and syntactic structures in the immediate constituents theory from a didactic point of view. With the help of 40 exercises, each of them with solution, the author increases the reader awareness of one or two problems before submitting a sentence for analysis. The technical tip of turning around the table of commutation tests in order to change it into syntactical tree is also a significant didactic breakthrough: it enables demonstration which is the base of the debate on the accuracy of analysis. Then the author produces all the critical thinking elements. So here is a small handbook without theoretical advance purpose, but it should be of use for all the students in linguistics.

Ideologiczne i polityczne uwarunkowania komunikacji językowej

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The eleven texts included in the Ideological and Political Conditions of Language Communication address communication in its ideological and political aspect. The relations between politics and ideology, which arouse strong emotions in public discourse, are not the keynote of the presented publication. The authors choose one of the two notions and focus their research on the phenomena defined as political behaviour, language policy, politolinguistics, major political ideologies, political discourse. Aside from the defined visions of the world as well as political doctrines and programmes, which reflect beliefs, the book focuses on values and valuation, i.e. moral values and language value. The linguists base their research on Polish, German, English, French and Italian language material, drawing from the present and history. Due to interdisciplinary character of the presented reflections, the volume has been divided into five parts, devoted to historical, terminological, pragmatic, translational and didactic matters.

Na drodze do wolności. Białoruska partyzantka kulturowa w przestrzeni publicznej i Internecie

Author(s): Joanna Getka,Jolanta Darczewska / Language(s): Polish

Mass protests in Belarus after the presidential election in 2020 showed all weaknesses of the official propaganda. The monograph characterises the tools of the cultural protest (banners, music, street art, digital forms of resistance), which exposed a deficit of truth in the relations between the government and society. They undermine and ridicule the actions undertaken by the presidential centre as well as the long-term strategy of the official propaganda. Regardless of the political outcome, the 2020 crisis will have long-lasting political, social and cultural consequences. It is an important factor in building the contemporary Belarusian identity.

Eliot’s Christianity in a Contemporary Perspective

Author(s): Małgorzata Grzegorzewska / Language(s): English

The book offers an analysis of Christian threads in T.S. Eliot’s poetry from the perspectives of World War II, the Holocaust and today’s crisis of Christianity in Western culture. The two most important motifs in the poet’s work are discussed: the issue of the Word made Flesh and the divine love – agape. This book looks into the conversation between literature and religion in the work of T.S. Eliot. It focuses on the figures of John the Baptist and the (Holy) Fool in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, the Wise Men in Journey of the Magi and the ʻwounded surgeon’ in East Coker, all of whom point to Eliot’s ongoing concern, both before and after his conversion, with the ‘hint half guessed, the gift half understood’ of poetic incarnation: words made living and suffering flesh. This concern anchors Eliot’s poems in the idea of the Logos as Second Person, which has shaped Western cultures of reading over more than two millennia. It also reverberates in the works of the British and Polish poets invoked here alongside Eliot: W.H. Auden, E. Jennings, R.S. Thomas, G. Hill, K.K. Baczyński and Z. Herbert.

Stałe motywy metafizyczne w twórczości Mariny Cwietajewej

Author(s): Elena Janczuk / Language(s): Polish

The analysis of metaphysical motifs in Marina Tsvetaeva’s lyric poetry, their occurrence and tendency to continuous metamorphosis. Tsvetaeva made a profound change in understanding the essence of the 20th century poetry and her reflections on the world and man’s place in it brought her closer to philosophy. The motifs she used had been present in philosophical discourse as they referred to such notions as space and time, body and soul, life and death, light and darkness, silence and sound, god. To a scholar and a reader Tsvetaeva’s poetry means constant discovering and decoding senses and emotions hidden in sophisticated words.

Author(s): Bilyana Mihaylova,Boris Vounchev,Hristina G. Markou,Ekaterina Tarpomanova,Krasimira Aleksova,Marina Dzhonova,Nikola Krastev,Petya Asenova,Zlatka Guentchéva / Language(s): English

The present volume is a collection of papers which originated from the research project The Balkan languages as an emanation of the ethnocultural community of the Balkans (Verb typology) funded in the years 2017–2020 by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science. It can be seen as an attempt to present the state of the art in research into the grammatical categories of Balkan languages. Our main goal has been to represent a full picture of the verb system of the languages belonging to the Balkan Sprachbund, pointing out not only the similarities between them but the differences as well. That is why we have aimed at presenting a more exhaustive description of the verb categories: aspectuality, temporality, modality and the systematic connections among them; the expression of evidentiality; the problems of diathesis. This inevitably includes the processes of grammaticalization of the forms of the verb, the paths of morphologization of syntactic constructions, the transitions between modality and temporality and other phenomena in the development of the Balkan system of the verb.

Fuera de lugar: cuerpos (in)tangibles en las culturas minorizadas de la península Ibérica

Author(s): / Language(s): Spanish

This volume aims to research how Catalan, Galician, Basque and Mirandese literature, cinema and art conceptualize alterity with a focus on the corporeal. The articles explore how the Other is constructed from the perspective of minority culture and how their own identities are created in reference to this Other. Furthermore, the authors reflect on how the dominant cultures (Spanish and Portuguese, respectively) inscribe otherness in minority cultures. They also examine the values attributed to the Other and how they manifested themselves through the body from both perspectives, they look at areas of alterity framed in the Catalan, Galician, Basque and Mirandese identities, their possible variants and their multidimensional character.

ĄĘ – [Wirtualny] Festiwal Języka Polskiego w Gruzji

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The publication sums up the first four editions of "ĄĘ". [Virtual] Festival of the Polish Language in Georgia, organized in 2020–2022 by the Polish Institute in Georgia, the Polish Embassy in Georgia and the Polonicum Centre of the University of Warsaw. The authors discuss the idea of the Festival and the character of subsequent editions, each of which had a watchword, a notion key to getting to know a sphere of the Polish culture. In the autumn of 2020 that word was hope, the spring of 2021 was a time of futurological considerations centred around the works of Stanisław Lem, in the autumn of 2021 the participants looked into the notion of home in the Polish language and culture, and the spring of 2022 was devoted to tastes and aesthetics and to the works of that year’s patron, Bruno Schulz. The authors have shown how the experiences of a cultural institution familiar with local realities and an educational institution which in its daily activities deals with research and didactics can go hand in hand. The publication also features interactive links to all the video footage of the Festival’s lectures and workshops. Bringing this material together not only serves to document the Festival but also renders it available to teachers, students, and everyone interested in learning Polish as a foreign language.

„Thyestes” Lucjusza Anneusza Seneki. Opracowanie monograficzne

Author(s): Iwona Słomak / Language(s): Polish

"Thyestes", to which this monograph is devoted, exhibits all the characteristics of the Senecan plays that facilitate the centuries-long interest in them on the part of scholars and lovers of literature. They are also responsible for the distinctiveness of the author’s work against the background of Greek tragedy — due to the philosophical-critical nature of the work, they disengage from a directly didactic tone in favor of provocation and irony, the potential to engage less with the emotions and more with the intellect of the audience. It is possible to also find here examples of Seneca’s characteristic semantic and formal solutions, which confirm the dynamic development of the genre in Antiquity and at the same time may seem fairly modern today.

Poetyka kulturowa a praktyka Joanny Bator

Author(s): Angelika Siniarska-Tuszyńska / Language(s): Polish

The book is devoted to the cultural practices of Joanna Bator – a cultural expert and researcher dealing with artistic writing. Her texts, which are part of the trend of engaged literature, have been subjected to analytical procedures in the area of cultural poetics. Cultural poetics, also called new historicism, was initiated by Stephen Greenblatt in the 1980s and is still a leading method of reading cultural works, taking into account the historical background. As a bundle of interdisciplinary discourses, it gives researchers endless interpretative possibilities in the fields of art and science. Artists, in turn, draw on Greenblatt's concept when they creating works. In Joanna Bator's texts, cultural poetics serves as a building block for expression, becoming a consistently repeated practice. The confrontation of theory with the artist's practical ways of approaching problems sheds new light on the coexistence and interpenetration of the terms: poetics and practice. Moreover, it allows you to take a look at contemporary writing trends. Cultural poetics and practice of Joanna Bator supplements the research issues within cultural studies and also expands the issue of creative writing. This is the first monograph devoted entirely to the Joanna Bator’s works, taking up cultural studies tropes such as: feminism, Others and Strangers, micro-narratives, place and non-place, generational and social conflicts, transgenerative traumas, cultural determinism, relationships with parents, psychoanalysis, somatopoetics, language constructing reality, travel as therapy, constructing identity, writing - a way of survival, therapeutic role of sadness, anthropology, autoethnography, postmodernism, wound, scar, lack, loss, consumerism, lifestyle trends (vegetarianism, minimalism, wabi-sabi).
