Spatial organization and monastic life in Bizere abbey (Arad County, Romania)

Author(s): Adrian Andrei Rusu / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2015

The results of the archaeological excavations at the former Benedictine abbey of Bizere are represented now by a series of buildings’ remains and approximately ten thousand artifacts. Even so, the archaeological research is far from being exhausted allowing more working hypotheses regarding the spatial organization and monastic life. Therefore, at this stage everyday life at Bizere is recomposed from artifacts intended for intellectual activities, constructions related to water management, various types of crafts (stone and masonry workshops, ceramic production, smithy, glass production), games, and pilgrimage. Isolated artifacts offer clues and generate discussions on shapes and functionality, as well as on their origin and production place.

The spiritual environment and artistic patronage in South Bohemia of the 14th century

Author(s): Zlata Gersdorfova / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2015

The contribution deals with the both spiritually and materially rich environment of the dominion of the Rožmberk Lords, the most powerful noble dynasty in Bohemia. Thanks to their contacts and position in the Czech Kingdom, South Bohemia along with its monasteries (Cistercian monasteries in Vyšší Brod and in Zlatá Koruna, the Augustinian canonical monastery in Třeboň, and the monastery of Conventual Franciscans and Poor Clares in Český Krumlov) are associated with magnificent pieces of medieval Bohemian art that count among the top representatives of Gothic art in Bohemia and in Europe in general (the Madonna of Český Krumlov, works of the Master of Vyšší Brod, works of the Master of the Třeboň altar piece, e.g.). This contribution attempts to outline both the spiritual and the cultural background of these works' origin, mirroring the piety that reflected the respect for relics. In this context, it is important to point out the relics of the Corpus Christi Feast, which was, in the manner of Prague festivities, held annually in the residential town of the Rožmberk dynasty, the city of Český Krumlov, and interconnected both functionally and spiritually the individual monasteries of South Bohemia.

LA PARTECIPAZIONE DEGLI ARCHITETTI, SCULTORI E IMPRESARI ITALIANI ALLA COSTRUZIONE DEI MONUMENTI AI CADUTI DELLA GRANDE GUERRA NELLA ROMANIA INTERBELLICA

LA PARTECIPAZIONE DEGLI ARCHITETTI, SCULTORI E IMPRESARI ITALIANI ALLA COSTRUZIONE DEI MONUMENTI AI CADUTI DELLA GRANDE GUERRA NELLA ROMANIA INTERBELLICA

Author(s): Paolo Tomasella / Language(s): Italian Issue: 1/2021

The Participation of Italian Arhitects, Sculptors and Entrepreneurs in the Construction of the Heroes’ Monuments Fallen in the First World War in Interwar Romania. Seasonal or permanent migration from Italian regions to Romania in the 19th and 20th centuries involved a variable number of unskilled workers but also personalities (artists and sculptors), many Venetians and Friulians, who left clear, tangible evidence, of their stay and the results of their work on the Romanian territory. With the end of the First World War and with the outbreak of Greater Romania, the need to build memorials dedicated to those who fell in the struggles for the unification of the nation was felt throughout the country. Sculptors and entrepreneurs from Veneto and Friuli were among the protagonists of this process of institutionalizing memory. It is worth mentioning, regarding the sculpture, the presence in Romania of the artists Ettore Ferrari and Raffaello Romanelli; the Italian entrepreneurs and stonemasons, Giovanni Battista De Nicolò, Victor and Giovanni Mezzarobba, made a significant contribution to the materialization of the projects to honor the memory of the heroes of the First World War. The artistic and urban involvement of the Italians settled in Romania proved to be important in the construction of public monuments in many cities in Romania. Vincenzo Puschiasis (1874–1941), a sculptor established in Piatra Neamț in 1899, played a special role among the stone carvers of Friulian origin living in Romania. Puschias is established himself in Romania not only locally, but also nationally, through the large number and quality of monuments erected for the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War. His works are characterized by strength, finesse, elegance, combination of styles and aesthetic harmony. After 1919, Vincenzo Puschias is founded the Construction Company in the County of Neamț, specializing in the construction of memorials dedicated to those who fell in the First World War. Among his most remarkable works in this field are: the funeral complex from the “Eternitatea” Cemetery of Piatra Neamț, made in collaboration with Gheorghe Iconaru; monuments of the heroes erected in Bistricioara, Căciulești, Verșești, Roznov, Bahna, Văleni, Zănești; obelisks in Gârcina, Oanțu, Roznov, Piatra Șoimului, Podoleni; the statue of the hero soldier from Viișoara.

Aynalıkavak Kasrı Duvar Yazılarına Yansıyan Osmanlıİran Rekabeti

Aynalıkavak Kasrı Duvar Yazılarına Yansıyan Osmanlıİran Rekabeti

Author(s): Kemal Kahraman / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2022

Aynalıkavak Palace is a small but unique building remaining from the Imperial Dockyard Palace complex by the Golden Horn of Istanbul. Together with its wast garden, today it is affiliated with the National Palaces organization. Ottoman inscriptions adorning the garden gate, entrance door and interiors of the palace are of great importance with its classical architecture. Here classical Ottoman architectural style, living its last days, is meeting with classical Ottoman poetry and art of calligraphy. This work, based on this meeting, focuses on the historical rivalry between Ottoman and Safavid dynasties observed in the poems inscripted on the walls of Aynalıkavak Palace. At the first section we try to make a historical analyses over the time and palace itself. At the second section, the intensive religious, political and cultural rivalry between Ottoman and Iranian dynasties is taken into consideration. At the third section, reflections of this rivalry on the poetry scripted on the entrance and interior walls of Aynalıkavak Palace are studied. At the last section originals of the aforementioned poems and our tranlated versions of those verses into modern Turkish are presented.

18TH CENTURY SERBIAN ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES IN THE FORMER PROVINCES OF THE HABSBURG EMPIRE, A CASE STUDY ON BANAT AND HUNGARY

18TH CENTURY SERBIAN ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES IN THE FORMER PROVINCES OF THE HABSBURG EMPIRE, A CASE STUDY ON BANAT AND HUNGARY

Author(s): Mihaela Vlăsceanu / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2017

The baroque style has been often regarded by specialists as one of the first international movements transcending the limits of time and space, manifesting in areas found far from the centre that set the trend. The ideological discourse promoted by the Habsburgs had as a model the scenery of the great cities in the empire, with urban principles that stated the importance of the parochial church, or the main square adorned with monumental sculptures as visual rhetoric. It was quite a fashion to assert allegory and symbols as forms of power manifestation, having didactic and decorative values at the same time. The image instructs, the form sets boundaries to what is seen, and becomes a model to be followed in a manner that sets the prototype. The architectural prototypes of the churches raised in Hungary and Banat in the 18th century were configured by Lipót Kollonich. During Leopold I the Serbs were allowed to build churches made of stone replacing the wooden ones from the previous century. The study aims to present a comparison between the Serb architectural topography and style in two of the provinces found in the boundaries of the Habsburg Empire. How the central European models were received and set as trends in religious architecture is the main target of this research.

„EXAMENUL DE STAT” ȘI PROIECTUL DE DIPLOMĂ ÎN ȘCOALA ROMÂNEASCĂ DE ARHITECTURĂ A ANILOR 50

Author(s): Ana-Maria Vesa-Dobre / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 8/2016

The fifteen post-war years of the Romanian School of Architecture are a time of deep quest, as well as of confusion and loss. They are the sad paradox of both the innovations and education reforms that will eventually warp the School on its whole, shaping it in tune with the newly set up political ideology. The short history of the School, cast during the early 20th century and the inter-war period, becomes more and more scattered in the 50’s; its curriculum is gradually shaped after the Soviet paradigm, discharging important traditional lectures, such as Art History, History of World Architecture, Byzantine Architecture etc., while focusing instead on the industrial, agrarian and massive urban planning programmes. In the same time, the academic curriculum is shaped into 6 years of study (12 semesters) and finals get a new structure, that include the Final Exam (or State Exam) and the Diploma project – the latter being developed during the whole last year of study. Every detailed aspect, of economic and social context, is directly applied into any diploma project, thus having a strong effect on the students’ mindset as well as the profession’s, in general, while the ideological restraints place them in a convergent perspective. The general compulsory rule of the Socialist Realist, official architecture is adopted, yet absurd and all the more so imperative in deployment. The individuality, original ity or innovation – as essential qualities as they are in the evolution of this artistic field are strictly cancelled and any means of their further occurrence will be taken as a straight injury towards the system. The experiment, the idealistic-utopia or innovation within the projects is progressively diluted into the “realism” of the socialism building. Until 1947, the Romanian architect could still enjoy a liberal practice, either as a freelancer or as a principal of an architectural bureau. In the post-Stalinist era (1953) though, his professional private practice is forbidden. In the meanwhile, the building regulations become strict and compulsory applied into the architectural design and urban planning, while indirectly they also infuse the architectural education system. Consequently, the study of the 50’s tries to discover the various aspects of both the Romanian architectural practice and the School of that time – by analysing its Diploma Project, as well as its Final Exam, developed as significant and meaningful pieces of this very process.

REABILITAREA ŞI CONVERSIA CLĂDIRILOR INDUSTRIALE ÎN LOCUINŢE SOCIALE PENTRU TINERET SUB AUSPICIILE DEZVOLTĂRII DURABILE

Author(s): Anca Gabriela Stăncioiu / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 6/2014

The great economical, social and political problems result in an increasing necessity of residences for families with low income. The resident populations has impoverished greatly worldwide. However, considering the market economical situations which are increasingly harder, these residences are not profitable, the old ones must be renovated in order to meet the new living demands and all these require massive funding, and profitability is out of the question. The strong tradition and the success of occidental countries in the field of social politics are tributary to their extremely judiciary means of application in the economical, political and administrative realities of each. However, the particular financial possibilities that these developed countries dispose of, does not infer the dissipation of public or private money. Rehabilitation and reconversion of industrial buildings represent other resolution possibilities for the residence crisis. The nest scenario is to build or rehabilitate other types of buildings or real estate destined for residence but in which there may coexist social apartments (for young people, unemployed and seniors) and private-property apartments. According to various psycho-sociological studies, this is one of the best solutions against the social segregation phenomenon, which is so frequent in today’s world. Final results are expected to conserve the specificity, cultural and spiritual heritage of the respective community as well as the traditional way of living.

What Will You Be Like, Prague of the Year 2000? The Prague – Central Bohemian Agglomeration Plan in the Context of Political Changes at the Turn of the 1960s and the 1970s

What Will You Be Like, Prague of the Year 2000? The Prague – Central Bohemian Agglomeration Plan in the Context of Political Changes at the Turn of the 1960s and the 1970s

Author(s): Dita Dvořáková / Language(s): English Issue: 1-2/2022

A new spatial plan for Prague was adopted in 1964. During the approval process, the government took into account the recommendations of experts in urbanism, and, in the interest of the areas’ economic revival, took the first administrative steps towards a planned interconnection of the city’s economy with that of the neighbouring Central Bohemian Region. A working group consisting of employees of the Office of the Chief Architect of the City of Prague, the Terplan state planning institute and other institutions was commissioned to carry out a preliminary study for the Prague-Central Bohemian agglomeration spatial plan. The group was led by Jiří Hrůza, an urban planner and prominent Czechoslovak town planning theorist. The planners considered the scientific-technical revolution to be an important force in the future dynamics of housing and social life in the agglomeration. Research into the social context of the scientific-technical revolution was carried out by a group of experts led by Marxist philosopher Radovan Richta, whose conclusions were part of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia’s ideological equipment from the mid-1960s. Contemporary sociological research provided another ideological basis for the project. Sociologists’ findings on the stratification of Czechoslovak society found their way into the concept of the spatial plan through a programme of targeted support for social mobility.

INDIVID – SPAŢIU VERDE: REACŢII PSIHOLOGICE ŞI COMPORTAMENTALE

Author(s): Lavinia-Elena Luparu / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 5/2013

We live in an experimental society, a high-tech environment in which human existence becomes an experiment. The easiest, but at the same time the most complex one of all these experiments is based on the psychological interaction of the individual with space. Focusing the discourse will give a better view of the biunivocal relationship between the individual and the public and private green space from an interdisciplinary perspective. When designing green spaces, we meditate on the individual’s perception as a response to the stimulus generated by the newly created landscape. The desire to protect, improve or recreate a landscape does not only alter the visual image or the relief, but it also acquires new forms, shapes and psychological relationships. From a psychological perspective, landscape designing is a generator of spaces or at the same time, it can be defined as psychological involvement in design. The psycho-landscaping relationship is necessary in terms of creating a unique landscape as an answer to some of the society’s needs.

BUCUREȘTIUL ÎN CĂUTAREA EUROPEI

BUCUREȘTIUL ÎN CĂUTAREA EUROPEI

Author(s): Bogdan-Andrei Fezi / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 4/2012

Bucharest is often described as a city between East and West, as being considered in the 19th century a capital of contrasts and as being called “The Little Paris”. Those constantly repeated ideas omit one of the most successful Romanian achievements as a result of sustained effort for several generations, which is reforming the city by constantly following a Western European model. This long series of transformations are the basis for almost any street wider than 12 m, for every straight avenue, for every bank of the river Dâmbovița and for most of the parks. Motivated by the need for reform and by the consciousness of belonging to the Western Europe, at the beginning of from the nineteenth century, Bucharest started a long process of restructuring after the European model. The capital city fundamentally changed the laws, the administration, the education system. The city accomplished achievements that, in the 20th century, overtook important world metropolises. This search for the European model is due both to political and to architectural reasons. Over the centuries, the Romanian countries tried to escape the political influence of the Orient seen as oppressive. The Ottoman suzerainty, between 1716- 1821, and later then the Soviet troops which occupied the country and imposed the communist regime created a constant counter-reaction of seeking for support to the West. One of the clearest examples of this point of view came from the famous Romanian architect George Matei Cantacuzino, on the eve of World War II: “We go to war to the East, following our historical destiny line. But we fight this war to free ourselves from harmful influences. Thus, we shall look more deeply and with more serenity to the Western civilization, which is in the spirit of our past. Being Romanian means not only being born Romania, but it requires a continuous indication of a consensual attitude, appreciated sincerely and felt vigorously. We want the West with all its spiritual discipline, with all its conceptual clarity”.

IDENTITATEA MODELELOR DIN LUXEMBURG - VALEA MOSELLEI ÎN PEISAJUL CULTURAL BĂNĂŢEAN.

Author(s): Maria Icoana Săbăilă Pavlovici / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2011

Author(s): Iulia Delcea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2011

Author(s): Natalia Procop / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

The study includes the analysis of works of art executed in various techniques of painting and graphics that have as subject the Red Mill, or as it is also called the Levenzon Mill. The building is one of the first steam mills, a monument of industrial architecture of local value, included in the Register of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Chișinău and which today is in a damaged state. The architecture of the industrial building could be analyzed not only by the plans of architects and engineers, but also by the works of visual artists. The theme was addressed in the paintings and graphics of Mihai Grecu, Valentina Brâncoveanu, Vasile Moșanu, Inesa Țâpina, Ludmila Țonceva, Ion Serbinov, Grigore Plămădeală, Maia Serbinov-Cheptănaru, Maria Serbinov, Iraida Ciobanu et al., the works differ both in terms of execution technique as well as by composition, chromatic range, etc. As some of the works are in public and private collections abroad, the building becomes better known and can be exploited as a tourist attraction. The importance of this building was indisputable in the period of the 19th – the 20th century. Currently, the edifice is at risk of being destroyed, but thanks to the achievements of plastic artists, it will certainly remain in the memory of the Chișinău residents.
