Evaluation of Environmental Performance of Companies

Author(s): Gergely Tóth / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2003

The paper portrays environmental performance evaluation as a novel, innovative, applicable method or group of methods, which is not free of difficulties, but ultimately leads to the right direction. Apart from the analytical explanation and evaluation of 11 EPE methods, the article systematises them, via classifying into five clusters, based on their complexity. After that a logical sequence of using the methods is sketched, this is most relevant for practical users. With the empirical research I try to go beyond passive observation to a certain extent (statistical analysis of data - GEMS-HU surveying a representative sample of 370 manufacturing enterprises). The main objective of the presented research is to spread environmental performance evaluation, maybe slightly, but actively. It strives to enhance the application of EPE through a guidebook for practitioners, training sessions, exercises and demonstration projects. This active role might be the main methodological innovation of the current research. Only one of the three demonstration projects brought real success, but I learned more from the mistakes, than from the positive results. In the last two sections, five hypotheses are formulated and verified, scrutinising the existence, implementation and usefulness of environmental performance evaluation.

KRIVIČNOPRAVNA ZAŠTITA ŽIVOTNE SREDINE

KRIVIČNOPRAVNA ZAŠTITA ŽIVOTNE SREDINE

Author(s): Mirza Totić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 14/2015

This paper deals with several important issues related to human activity that results in environmental degradation. It emphasizes the offenses against the most valuable goods for humanity, their perpetrators, legal regulations and instruments that impose sanctiones against these criminal activities. The paper elaborates questions as, responsibility for the violation of classical legal principles or responsibility for the offenses and caused damage. Among a number of principles on which the environmental law is founded, this paper particularly favors the principle of sovereignty over natural resources and the commitment to preservation of the nature. Many conferences were held, many declarations were adopted, many conventions were signed and provided a multitude of legally binding statements and laws, in order to wide the understanding of the concept of environmental protection and the need for its salvation. The endangering of nature is the result of human actions whose effects are now noticeable in those places where previously they could not be expected. Man becomes aware that he had committed large crimes that without any doubt require the criminal responsibility only by positioning himself between the science and technology and endangered environment.

Author(s): Juan-José Nájera-Sánchez,Eva-María Mora-Valentín,Marta Ortiz-De-Urbina-Criado,Pablo Moura-Díez / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This paper contributes to a better understanding of the research on environmental management using bibliometric methods to supplement the subjective evaluation of literature reviews. Focusing on the Management and Business fields, our main objective is to analyse the knowledge structure of environmental management literature and the evolution of related topics. We apply the co-word analysis method to identify different topics treated by the field across the studied periods, and to create networks and sub-networks. The results show the main topics and their evolution. We identify and explain six topics: green/environmental, resource-based-view, management, performance, corporate social responsibility and quality management. Development in this line of research shows progress in this discipline that commences with the green or environmental dimension and its effects on results and continues with issues that are more focused on quality management and corporate social responsibility. This study can be used as a reference for future research and help to increase company awareness of the importance of environmental issues in the design and implementation of strategies.

KÜRESEL EKOLOJİK KRİZ VE FELSEFE: PARADİGMADAN KAÇIŞ MÜMKÜN MÜ?

Author(s): Fehmi ÜNSALAN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2019

The aim of this study is to critically examine the nature of philosophical approaches to the burning question of ecological crisis. In this context, study will primarily focus on the specific dilemmas that have caused the current ecological crisis and the questions brought by these dilemmas and secondly to the relationship between ethical approaches dominating the environmental philosophy and current ecological crisis. Philosophy, in fact, is unable to ignore the main problems of its age. And in this sense, it is not possible to say that philosophy is reckless about ecology. However, while philosophy deals with contemporary problems, it has, by its very nature, repositions the focus of interrogation with a conceptual framework and transforms for constituent philosophical discussions.

PUBLIC SAFETY SYSTEM WITH ALARM TRIGGERING BASED ON J48 DECISION TREES CLASSIFICATION

PUBLIC SAFETY SYSTEM WITH ALARM TRIGGERING BASED ON J48 DECISION TREES CLASSIFICATION

Author(s): Valerij Grašič,Biljana Mileva Boshkoska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

There is much research and work around the world on how to raise situation awareness for cases of natural disasters and catastrophes. It is often necessary to evaluate the extent of such events in advance with the intention to minimise the risks and the damage arising from such events. Our challenge comes from the public safety system. The goal is to use open data, and by using a classifier to recognise in advance when the extent of such events will be so large that it will be necessary to trigger an alarm within public safety system for the staff and all supporting services. We are using J48 decision tree as a classifier. Based on TP (True Positive), that is, of instances correctly classified as a given class for triggering alarm we can conclude that we can classify with a high probability when such events happen. We thus confirmed that it is possible to carry out classification based on open data. Such alarm triggering is an additional feature of public safety systems which can help to improve situational awareness further.

Biogospodarka – rozwój gospodarczy i ochrona zasobów naturalnych w kontekście ochrony praw człowieka

Biogospodarka – rozwój gospodarczy i ochrona zasobów naturalnych w kontekście ochrony praw człowieka

Author(s): Piotr Krajewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 39/2018

The term “bioeconomy” – just as “sustainable development” – quickly found enthusiasts among theorists and practitioners due to the fact, that it is a new approach to economic development, not through the prism of inavoidable losses in the environment and a gradual deterioration of raw materials, because, it occurs that there can be effective functioning without negative consequences for people and the environment. This is the continuation of the existing production processes with such a difference, that it happens in a sustainable way and in many instances – using brand new technologies aiming at minimizing the consumption of natural resources and impact on the environment with a view to future generations. It concerns the maximum compliance of developing actions with absorbent abilities of natural and anthropomorphised ecosystems.

Author(s): Anna Stasiak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2019

Currently, over half of the inhabitants of our globe live in urbanised areas. This has led to a significant increase in population density in cities over the last few decades, and thus has changed the lifestyle of their residents. In thousands of cities, it is increasingly difficult to find a pretext and the opportunity to establish closer relationships with the people around us. Artistic activities related to the creation and presentation of art in public spaces are one of the ways to activate the potential of urban residents. The aim of the article is to analyse five small-scale artistic activities defining spatial procedures, thanks to which positive effects can be achieved – socialising and making space more aesthetic.

INTERDEPENDENCE OF ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

INTERDEPENDENCE OF ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Author(s): Andrzej Czyżewski,Jakub Staniszewski / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

The aim of the study was to identify the most important determinants of economic and environmental efficiency of agricultural production in the EU countries in 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2013, with particular emphasis on structural conditions. The paper presents the results of modelling with the use of Eurostat data and methods of data envelopment analysis (DEA) and panel regression. In the case of economic efficiency, the importance of production concentration, understood as economic strength of farms, associated with an even distribution of production, was identified. In the case of eco-efficiency, its limiting factor turned out to be specialisation towards animal production. These results allow us to conclude that it is possible to achieve economic and environmental objectives at the same time, as none of the identified determinants was repeated in both models with the opposite sign. The results of the research are also a premise for the implementation of an active structural policy under the CAP after 2020.

Procedural Human Rights in Environmental Cases – Principles Established in the Practice of the European Court of Human Rights

Author(s): Lejla Zilić / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2019

Although the environmental rights are not explicitly protected by the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Court of Human Rights has, nevertheless, examined a large number of environmental cases and developed rich jurisprudence in that field. Using the method of interpreting the European Convention as a living instrument, which says that European Convention must be interpreted in present day conditions, the European Court has examined environmental cases through an intensive interpretation of the domain of human rights and fundamental freedoms protected by the European Convention. In this context, the European Court has developed rich judicial practice both in terms of substantive and procedural human rights in the environmental matters. This paper aims to analyze the principles established by the European Court in its practice regarding procedural human rights in environmental matters. In this context, the paper analyzes the right to a fair trial, the right to an effective remedy, the right to freedom of expression, through the most important environmental cases before the European Court. The principles established in these cases should be guidelines to all countries of the Council of Europe when it comes to access to court, the execution of final court decisions, the right to an effective remedy and access to information in environmental matters.

IZVORI PROFESIONALNOG STRESA U KAZNENOPOPRAVNOM ZAVODU BIJELJINA

Author(s): Vedrana Rakić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 1/2016

Professional role of prison workers is complex, highly responsible, and dangerous. Working environment, heterogeneity of prison population and their needs, as well as challenges working staff meet on a daily basis are quite unique and demanding. Hence, it is not surprising that the work of prison employees is classified into the most stressful occupations. In 2014, in Detention and Rehabilitation Centre in Bijeljina, the research was carried out in order to identify the sources of professional stress specific for that institution. Ninety-two employees participated in the research out of 114 employees. Participants were of different sex, age, level of education, length of service, etc. The analysis of gained data selected physical determinants of the job, working load, dangers at work, and challenging relationships among colleagues as the main sources of stress among the employees of the Centre. While convicted persons have a range of different programmes to help them deal with their stressful environment, prison workers have limited resources designed to help with facing professional stress that is “blooming“ in specific prison environment. Taking into consideration that benefits of mapping, naming and dealing with the stress of prison employees are numerous, the care of mental health should be the central aspect of good prison management.
