Особливості становлення та розвитку законодавства про біосферні заповідники

Особливості становлення та розвитку законодавства про біосферні заповідники

Author(s): R. Holonko / Language(s): English,Russian,Ukrainian Issue: 134/2016

The purpose of the article is to study the formation and development of the legal framework for the conservation of nature, in particular features of formation of the legislation on biosphere reserves and their importance in the field of protection and conservation of biodiversity in Ukraine, starting from the IX century up to present time. The study is important to improve the practical relevance of biosphere serves and to develop ways to implement its functions and objectives.A long historical process of formation and development of legislation on biosphere reserves should be divided into two chronological periods. The first one includes the development of legislation on the protection of valuable natural objects and territories and the scientific work performed in the period of feudal, early capitalist development and the beginning of the soviet period (from the ninth century till the 50-ies of the XX century); the second period refers to the end of the soviet period and modern stage of development of the legislation concerning biosphere reserves (from 50-ies of the XX century till the modern times). This periodization is due to the fact that the biosphere reserve as a separate special category of protected areas appears only in the second half of the twentieth century. The concept of biosphere reserve was introduced in 1971 by the intergovernmental scientific program of UNESCO «Man and biosphere» (MAB), whose mission from the very beginning of the transaction was to create a scientific basis to improve the interaction between man and environment. The program was perceived by the Ukrainian SSR and was further developed in Ukraine.Only with the adoption on June 16 1992 of law of Ukraine «On nature reserve fund of Ukraine»,which defined the biosphere reserve as an environmental research institution of international significance with its own task, the biosphere status was enshrined at the legislative level for the biosphere reserves which are already functioning in Ukraine. Therefore, biosphere reserves than other categories of natural reserve fund is a new separate form of protection of unique landscapes, considering that it is necessary the further study of the peculiarities of their functioning, the study of foreign experience of legal regulation of biosphere reserves and the development of ways of development of national legislation in relation to the objects of natural reserve fund.

NaProTechnology – nadzieją dla niepłodnych małżonków

NaProTechnology – nadzieją dla niepłodnych małżonków

Author(s): Bożena Bassa / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2012

Parenthood is the main point of the marital community. At present, an important number of married couples are not capable of becoming parents for various reasons. Special mission of medicine is to assist the spouses undergoing difficulties in the accomplishment of their parental mission. One of the proposals offered by medicine are the current assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation. The technologies are of utilitarian and pragmatic character, undermining human dignity, impairing the unity of marriage and the child’s right to be conceived and born within a marriage. NaProTechnology is an alternative to this stream of practices and procedures of modern reproductive medicine. The founder of this new domain of medicine is professor Thomas Hilgers. NaProTechnology is a method of supporting human reproductivity. For treatment and diagnosis, NaProTechnology makes use of all the methods applied in classical medicine, which are frequently extender and improved. The so called Surgical NaProTechnology whose aim is to resituate the natural fertility, takes an important place in treatment of infertility. The therapeutic programme takes 18 to 24 months, in some cases up to 72 months. If the child is not conceived during this time, adoption is recommended to the spouses. Owing to its in-depth diagnosis and multidimensional treatment, NaProTechnology reveals high efficiency in treatment of infertility – its average efficiency, regardless of the cause of infertility and the age of the spouses, is about 50 %, for certain groups of patients its efficiency goes up even to 80 %.

Late Victorian Scientific Racism and British Civilizing Mission in Pears’ Soap Ads

Late Victorian Scientific Racism and British Civilizing Mission in Pears’ Soap Ads

Author(s): Ana Popovic / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

In this paper, I focus on the racist and imperialist messages in Pears’advertisements in the late-Victorian period. Namely, I search for the echoes of the then-flourishing British scientific racism in Pears’ advertisements, aiming to show how both the scientific and commodity racism were constructed to justify the British imperialist invasion of Africa by representing it as a “civilizing mission”.I begin by discussing the attention paid to the healthy (white) skin in British public health in the second half of the 19th century and the race and class implications of that. I analyze the racial connotations of healthy white skin on the example of a Pears’ Soap commercial featuring a white boy who gives soap to a black boy, which magically turns the black boy white. I then discuss the basic features of late-19th century British scientific racism and the way it was applied to this Pears’ Soap ad. In the last chapter, I discuss the so-called British “civilizing mission” defended both by scientific and commodity racism. In this chapter, I analyze two more Pears’ Soap advertisements to show how Pears’ brand appropriated the scientific discourse of the “civilizing mission” as a justification for imperialism.

Author(s): Andrzej Kasperek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 49 (2)/2017

In the article, a broad understanding of counterculture and countercultural resistance is proposed. The author suggests broadening the analyses of countercultural resistance with Romantic resistance and with ecological resistance movements. At the same time, he pays due attention in his analyses to the significance and manifestation of the “Romantic need.” The importance of the idea of nature is also emphasized – the idea which, in the author’s opinion, was taken over by Romantics from the esoteric tradition, only to be subsequently reinterpreted and continued in the 20th-century youth counterculture and in environmentalist milieu/environmentalist circles.

Trzy kultury i aksjologia Przyrody. Dążenie do racjonalności dyskusji o eksploatacji środowiska naturalnego

Author(s): Jan Marcin Węsławski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2018

Attempts to rationalize Man‑Nature conflicts rely on the discussion limits set to the Scientific facts only (value‑free science) with no emotion or opinion expressed. The number of examples presented from the field of hunting and fishery demonstrates that Science can model the population mortality or define the sustainable exploitation. However, it will not help to account for the way and reason for killing wild animals. As nowadays Nature is valued in a number of different ways, there is an urgent need to combine the traditionally separated domains of Science and Letters that is being postulated by a number of contemporary conservationists.

Inteligencja, jej memy oraz fizyka i mechanika

Inteligencja, jej memy oraz fizyka i mechanika

Author(s): Piotr Łaszczyca / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2018

A simple physical formula, F = T ∇ Sτ, stands out among a number of definitions of intelligence. Roughly translated, this means that intelligence is a thermodynamic force which maximizes the freedom of choice in the space of the real world. The formula raises criticism and further analysis shows that it depicts evolution rather than intelligence. Intelligence realized in the brains and the systems of artificial intelligence are based on information processing, virtual models and a correction of errors between predictions and material reality. In fact, such intelligence widens the space of freedom. The evolutionary mechanism by which biological intelligence has emerged is based on the positive reciprocal feedback between the increasing complexity of the nervous system and effective adaptation to the environment which is categorised as inclusive fitness. This principle seems to be limited by the law of energy allocation (trade-off principle). Evolution of intelligence is promoted by accumulation and free and easy exchange of information, which, in turn, is a result of social life typical for intelligent biological systems. In these systems intelligence is regarded as an integration of information, which is inevitably attributed to other psychical functions, such as long term memory, motivation, problem solving and consciousness. The crucial question is whether consciousness is necessary for the emergence of intelligence or not. Coexistence of biological and artificial intelligence may be described by two opposing models: the ecological principle of G. Gause, which states “one niche – one species” or an analogy of the theory of the endosymbiotic emergence of eukaryotes, proposed by L. Margulis. The extrapolated advancement of self-improving artificial intelligent systems confers practical significance to this question.

THE COMPLEX ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE POULTRY AND THE PIG SECTORS

THE COMPLEX ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE POULTRY AND THE PIG SECTORS

Author(s): Andrea Gergely,Veronika Fenyves,Mónika Harangi-Rákos / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2019

Meat consumption has always played a prominent role in human nutrition. The pork and poultry industries are the two most important sectors in terms of meat consumption and production in the European Union and Hungary. Pork production has long been well ahead of poultry production but according to the latest research and forecasts it seems that the poultry industry will soon take the lead. The main objective of the paper is a detailed sector-level analysis. Currently the research comprises a small number of analyses of the two sectors. The research reviewed the international and domestic situation of the poultry and pork sectors as well as their development of production and consumption values. The paper focuses on the economic analysis, its theoretical background, role and tasks. It utilises the database provided by the Agricultural Economics Research Institute and uses various types of index numbers and the Du-Pont system for causal relationships among indexes. The database contains various balance sheets and profit and loss accounts for the period 2005-2015. The data for 2015 were available in three categories based on the Standard Production Value. In particular, the paper looks into the development of the asset and capital structure and the analysis of short-term solvency and profitability. The findings show that the development of the two sectors is in tune with international production and consumption trends.

Author(s): Leonid Ivanovich Savinov,Tatyana Vladimirovna Solovyeva,Dinara Asymovna Bistyaykina,Alyona Sergeevna Karaseva / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2020

The article presents the results of theoretical and empirical study of the problem of postponing childbearing by women of childbearing age from 18 to 44 years in the Republic of Mordovia. The characteristics of the Russian specificity of delayed childbearing by women are given. The factors promoting this process, including those existing at the level of an individual woman, as well as the factors of support at the state level are revealed. The empirical material shows that, despite the fact that the policy of the state paying sufficient attention to the process of transformation in all spheres of society, aimed at increasing the demographic potential of the population, the majority of respondents consider themselves to be unprotected in the sphere of motherhood and childhood. In accordance with such attitude women try to postpone the birth of a child to a later time (on the average — to 35—39 years). The authors of the study took into account individual and personal characteristics of women in the areas of: financial assistance and support, career growth and self-realization, healthy lifestyle, mental health, medical care, legal protection, demographic processes. It was revealed that reproductive attitudes of women aged 26—35 years differ little from those of women aged 36—44 years. Additional measures of the state support promoting the solution of problems of “real” and “potential” mothers in the Republic of Mordovia are allocated. The authors evaluate the impact of the regional measures on the problem. In addition, as promising areas of family and demographic policy in the field of fertility, the following should be noted: a set of financial measures, including both ensuring a minimum standard of living for employees taking into account their marital status, labor adaptation of women in the decree, and a proportional increase in benefits for the second and subsequent child; strengthening measures of targeted support in the system of social protection of the family; protection of reproductive health of the population from adolescence; reorientation of measures of family and demographic policy of the country from the conceptual component to strategic planning. The recommendations aimed at the development of effective measures and the creation of effective conditions focused on the compromise interaction between women and the state, taking into account the reproductive interests of the female population and the needs of society in the reproduction of the population. Such measures can be effective if all public authorities work together in a comprehensive manner to provide adequate assistance to women of childbearing age.

Becoming liminal – existence in anti-structure

Becoming liminal – existence in anti-structure

Author(s): Karolina Żyniewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 21 (28)/2019

This paper is based both on my empirical experience, related to the implementation of artistic projects in biological laboratories, and on theoretical consideration. It focuses on the cultural and biological meaning of liminality. First, I introduce the idea of liminality derived from anthropology, and more precisely from the theory of the trigeminal structure of ritual as formulated by Arnold van Gennep and developed by Victor Turner. Then, to those anthropological theories pertaining to culture I add the voice of Susan Merill Squier, who draws attention to the fact that technological changes around our corporeality should affect the expansion of liminality and its biological significance. Finally, I refer to her concept of the existence of liminal beings − non-human agents living in the area of the in-between, between any current form of embodiment and a future one. In Squier’s opinion in being humans we become liminal while coexistence with liminal beings can help us to pass this important bio cultural ritual. I would like to post the question: what does this coexistence look like? Can bio art create an opportunity for this coexistence?

INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Author(s): Maria Alexandrescu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

In this article we were interested to find out when grandparents appear in the lives of grandchildren and the role they play in the extended family. We started from a few questions to which we tried to find answers, relying both on specialised literature and on data obtained through qualitative methods, in particular interviews and observation. In what situations do grandparents appear in the lives of grandchildren? What role do they play in their lives? What factors influence their role? To what extent has their role changed in contemporary society? What are the repercussions for the family? The field survey was carried out in two stages: the first stage in 2009-2011 and the second stage in 2014-2015, where we used qualitative methods in data collection and the thematic method in data analysis. A corpus of fifteen interviews conducted with parents, grandparents, teachers, students, priests, psychiatrists and school counsellors was thematically analysed, with the central theme of the roles of grandparents, both in the communist period and after 1989. The role of grandparents in the family has as effects, on the one hand, their participation in the upbringing, education and training of grandchildren, the maintenance of family memory, providing emotional and affective stability, and on the other hand, their permissiveness with the mistakes of grandchildren can lead to delinquent acts among minors.

SOCIALITY: STRUCTURES, PROCESSES, AND IMPLICATIONS IN THE STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR

SOCIALITY: STRUCTURES, PROCESSES, AND IMPLICATIONS IN THE STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR

Author(s): Vlad Ovidiu Cioacă / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This article examines sociality and sociability as interdependent concepts, where sociality represents individuals' innate predisposition to engage in social interactions, and sociability reflects the manifestation of these interactions in social networks and relationships. The analysis highlights how social structures influence sociability, with cooperative and participatory forms stimulating it, while competitive and elitist forms inhibit it. Although individuals are shaped by collective norms and values, they retain the capacity to create and innovate, thus facilitating social change and maintaining a balance between stability and evolution in society. Sociological paradigms such as positivism, social exchange theory, and Max Weber's theory of social action provide different frameworks for understanding human interactions. Positivism emphasizes social order, while social exchange theory explores reciprocity and benefit maximization, extending beyond material exchanges to include symbolic relationships. Weber's theory highlights the subjective meaning individuals attribute to their interactions, illustrating the complexity of human motivations. The article also explores the role of religion and morality in maintaining social cohesion, focusing on how they evolve as societies transition from mechanical solidarity to organic solidarity.

Лапа підтримки, крило допомоги

Author(s): Yuliia Ozen / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 09/2024

Every Tuesday and Sunday, pet owners flock to a nearby pet store for sprouted oats, a favorite treat for their animals. The war has reduced the frequency of deliveries, impacting the availability of this nutritious snack. Conversations with neighbors often revolve around the war, power outages, and the well-being of pets during air raids. The community shares photos and stories of their pets, providing comfort and solidarity. The author reflects on the stress experienced by her cockatiel, Hoko, during air raids and the challenges of caring for her. A recent illness in Hoko required urgent veterinary care, highlighting the difficulties of finding specialized treatment for exotic pets. The narrative also touches on the broader impact of the war on pets and their owners, emphasizing the mutual support they provide each other. The story concludes with a reflection on the resilience and adaptability of both humans and animals in times of crisis.

Spolni skripti v starostnem subjektiviranju moških: teoretski zastavek skozi empirijo

Author(s): Renata Šribar / Language(s): Slovenian Issue: 107/2024

The article is based on a research study and uses less well-known conceptual and analytical tools. It focuses on the divergent gendering of older and old men from the perspective of the public/private divide. Preliminary research shows the greater presence of men at home and more care work, while women are becoming more active in the public. For the research on the hypothetical alternative of gendered old age, a target group of the highly educated and/or well professionally skilled older and old men was constituted. All of them possess above-average social and cultural capital. The results show familial involvement already during the employment period, and a perceptible presence in public life after retirement. Nevertheless, the research pointed to the hidden mechanisms of hegemonic masculinity, which could add to the theoretical deconstruction of gender hierarchies.
