International Position of Canada (2006-2018)

Międzynarodowa pozycja Kanady (2006–2018)

Author(s): Marcin Gabryś,Magdalena Marczuk-Karbownik,Tomasz Soroka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Canadian Foreign Policy; Stephen Harper; Justin Trudeau; NATO

The book Międzynarodowa pozycja Kanady (2006-2018)] [International position of Canada (2006-2018)] consists of three chapters written by three different scholars. Each chapter identifies and analyzes specific factors that have determined the position Canada holds in the contemporary international relations. The first chapter is devoted to the assessment of Canada's foreign policy during Stephen Harper’s prime ministership (2006-2015). This part of the book distinguishes and analyzes four basic elements of Stephen Harper's foreign policy doctrine: the need to keep a broad conservative coalition and to include the values and interests of this group of voters (as well as the personal views of the prime minister) in the formulation of foreign policy; the emphasis on the need to increase the role of the military sphere in building the international position of Canada; the redefinition of Ottawa's attitude to multilateralism; the importance of the economic sphere of international relations, especially international trade and the export of Canada’s natural resources, particularly energy resources. The second chapter is focused on the most contemporary Canadian foreign policy, as it was conducted by the Justin Trudeau government in the years 2015-2018. The chapter presents both the main theoretical assumptions of the Trudeau foreign policy doctrine and its practical implementation in such spheres of external policy as Canada's activity in the fora of multilateral international organizations, particularly in the contexts of peace-building and peacekeeping, immigration and refugee policies and bilateral economic relations between Canada and the U.S. The third chapter analyzes Canadian foreign policy towards Central and Eastern Europe between 2014 and 2018. The chapter proves that firm attitude towards Russia (especially sharp rhetoric and imposition of economic sanctions), military engagement within NATO and its reassurance measures in promoting security in Central and Eastern Europe, political, financial and military support for Ukraine, and closer cooperation with Poland can be considered as good exemplifications of Harper`s doctrine in Canadian foreign policy. The large Polish and Ukrainian diasporas in Canada, and their influence on politics in Ottawa is a very important factor as well. The Liberal government of Justin Trudeau has different foreign policy goals – it regards the necessity of a political dialog with Russia in other fields. However, Trudeau declares willingness to prolong supporting measures for Ukraine and commitment to NATO.

The development of book design features in Polish works of literature published in the 19th and 20th centuries

Rozwój cech wydawniczych polskiej książki literackiej XIX-XX wieku

Author(s): Janusz Dunin / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: cenzura; censorship; drukarz; printer; księgarnia; bookshop; autor książki; author of a book; magazine; Dunin Janusz; publishing house

It is a re-edition of the classic 1982 publication by J. Dunin which proved seminal for further research in the history of literature and the history of bibliology in Poland, with an introduction by Jacek Ladorucki. The book is a response to the expectations voiced by the academic milieu which pointed to the role of the publication in the 20th-century literary output and its presence in didactics and research, particularly at the time of the Digital Revolution. ”The study has established itself in the literary canon for bibliological studies in most Polish universities. Book design as described in the publication, documented by evolutionary characteristics of individual components of printing, enriched with notes on the history of reading culture and publishing institutions, is a reflection of changes in the form and reception of published writing in the past. Paratextual materials described by Dunin create a system and play a significant role in the social functioning of literature.”

The Motifs of Fauna and Flora in Literature and Culture. Literary and Language Analects, vol. 9

Motywy fauny i flory w literaturze i kulturze. Analecta Literackie i Językowe, tom IX

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: animals in mythology; fauna and flora in literature and culture; mimicry in literature; ecological humanities

From a scientific point of view, the publication should be assessed as a successful and valuable series of literary and cultural studies on the general phenomenon of mimicry in literature and other areas of art (with numerous references to zoology, botany, geography, ethnology and anthropology). Fauna and flora are treated here as natural phenomena on the one hand, and on the other as a reference point for determining the human condition through the use of proven instruments (exempla, heraldry, bestiaries, “cloister garths” poems collections, etc.). Works on the subject prove that insightful observation of the world of flora and fauna can well have a culture-forming function. In this approach, literary material becomes an exponent of an unconventional view of nature (both native and exotic), an interesting attempt to go beyond the stereotypical perception of animals and plants in various cultural circles. I would describe the methodological assumptions as hermeneutic inquiries within ecological humanities. They come down to searching for various meanings given to fauna and flora in literary works (or, broadly speaking, in cultural references). … In most perspectives, the animal and plant kingdom has been recognized as a phenomenological category, which allowed researchers to focus not only on the view and description, but also on exploring hidden meanings. At the time when more and more attention is being paid to the role of ecology in the life of societies and to the urgent need for respecting its principles, there is also an increasing demand for ecological humanities. This volume meets therefore current social expectations.

Author(s): Arkadiusz Kaźmierczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Pierre de Coubertin;sport;Olympism;philosophy of the Olympic games;sports education;sports activity;physical education;physical culture

The publication can become an important source of information for university students of pedagogical as well as physical education faculties. It offers a comprehensive description of topics which introduce the reader to the history of sport, the specialist nomenclature, the concept of Olympic education, interaction in coach–athlete relations, the educational significance of the role of coaches and instructors and their importance in proper upbringing. In the introduction, the author writes, “In European higher education, sport pedagogy has been recognized as an important academic discipline within the field of sport sciences; its aim is to support the educational endeavors of people participating in sports training and other forms of physical activity, regardless of place and time of their implementation throughout a person’s life.”The opinion just quoted is the best explanation of the need to present a study of the topic in the form of this handbook. Vade-mecum. Transliteracja autografu

Author(s): Cyprian Kamil Norwid / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Vade-mecum;Cyprian Norwid;textual scholarship;modern poetry;transliteration

The publication is a transliteration of all the manuscripts of poems included in Cyprian Norwid's Vade-mecum. This is the first attempt to publish Norwid's work, taking into account all the elements of the original notation, thus showing the often unknown editions of his most valued poems. Owing to this, it can serve as an excellent material base for textual research.“From the perspective of textual scholarship, this work has the value of a comprehensive, original documentation as the first complete transliteration of the autograph of Vade-mecum, one of the most important items in Polish literature. The task has been accomplished in a very meticulous and responsible way. It is an important scientific aid in research on the writings of Norwid.” From the review by prof. dr hab. Józef Fert (KUL)

A mosaic city. The culture-oriented description

Miasto mozaika. Opis kulturowy

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: city; ethnographic research; cultural anthropology; city in an interdisciplinary perspective; urban studies

The book is a collection of texts about the city. The city appears in them as a dynamic spatial figure and a multidimensional cultural and social idea. The authors: ethnographers, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and historians, create an urban mosaic. They present various adjacent, interpenetrating, and sometimes conflicting strategies for getting to know the city and including it in scientific reflection. Sometimes they do it, for instance, on the margins of discussions on the relation between cultural anthropology and history. The city inspiration is a challenge for them, which they try to harness by describing and interpreting changing urban landscapes and local history that builds local heritage, or tracking “urban threads” in various cultural texts. This volume is dedicated to Professor Grażyna Ewa Karpińska – an ethnographer and cultural anthropologist associated with the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Łódź. THE CITY – herein described and interpreted in various ways – is the dominant topic and area of her research, publication, teaching and expert activity. Her scientific achievements include, among others, studies on the culture of industrial workers, as well as ethnographic explorations and anthropological reflection on such categories as urban everyday life or the past in the landscape of cities and towns.

The use of atypical forms of employment in violation of labour and social security laws - diagnosis and prospects for the future

Stosowanie nietypowych form zatrudnienia z naruszeniem prawa pracy i prawa ubezpieczeń społecznych – diagnoza oraz perspektywy na przyszłość

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: atypical forms of employment; term employment contracts; self-employment; employee outsourcing; fictitious civil law employment; legality of employment; working on digital platforms; labour law; social security law

The monograph is a summary of the special 5th National Scientific Conference in the series "Atypical Employment Relations" organized at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lodz under the initiative of Prof. Tomasz Duraj, Ph.D., on 1-2 December 2022 by the Scientific Centre for Atypical Employment Relations and the Student Scientific Forum of Atypical Employment Relations of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Lodz, as well as the District Labour Inspectorate in Łódź. The dynamic development of atypical forms of employment leads to the precarisation of the labour market, generating uncertainty and instability of employment for contractors. This results in a significant reduction in standards in the following areas: protection of life and health, protection of remuneration for work, protection of dignity and personal rights, and protection against discrimination and unequal treatment. Bearing in mind this situation, as well as taking into account the fact that very often atypical forms of employment are used in violation of the applicable provisions of the labour law and social security law, the authors of the publication reflect on the reasons for this state of affairs. The aim of the monograph is to attempt to formulate constructive de lege ferenda conclusions that will allow for effective enforcement of labour law and social security law. There is an urgent need for the Polish legislator to take specific actions to strengthen legal mechanisms for counteracting violations of labour law and social security law in connection with the use of atypical forms of employment.

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: tools of war; Blue Army; Roman military; ancient siege art; Polish medieval cavalry; urban arsenals; guerrilla warfare; military industry; General Aleksander Litwinowicz; imagology; engineering troops; war propaganda; Middle East; World War II

Oblicza Wojny is a series published by the Lodz University Press since 2020, dedicated to military conflicts throughout the centuries. The ninth volume of this series is titled Tools of War. When thinking about tools used during wars, various types of weaponry and armament come to mind, and this is precisely the subject matter of the texts published in this volume. The discussions include fortifications in the Battle of Dyrrachium in 48 BCE, the armament of knights from the royal retinues of Polish kings in the second half of the 15th century, and the weaponry amassed in the arsenals of Krakow in the 17th century. Subsequent articles concern the 20th century, highlighting the use of armored trains in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921, the fate of the Polish 1st Tank Regiment at the end of World War I, Irish guerrilla warfare in the years 1919-1921, armament production in Poland before 1939, and aircraft used during World War II. The volume also includes an article on a rarely discussed topic by historians, which is the equipment of the Polish military from 1945 to 1989. The volume concludes with an article dedicated to attempts to create an army of the League of Arab States in 21st century. The authors are professional historians, and their texts are based on thorough analysis of sources.

Cultural poetics and practice of Joanna Bator

Poetyka kulturowa a praktyka Joanny Bator

Author(s): Angelika Siniarska-Tuszyńska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: cultural poetics; cultural practice; engaged writing; Joanna Bator; creative writing

The book is devoted to the cultural practices of Joanna Bator – a cultural expert and researcher dealing with artistic writing. Her texts, which are part of the trend of engaged literature, have been subjected to analytical procedures in the area of cultural poetics. Cultural poetics, also called new historicism, was initiated by Stephen Greenblatt in the 1980s and is still a leading method of reading cultural works, taking into account the historical background. As a bundle of interdisciplinary discourses, it gives researchers endless interpretative possibilities in the fields of art and science. Artists, in turn, draw on Greenblatt's concept when they creating works. In Joanna Bator's texts, cultural poetics serves as a building block for expression, becoming a consistently repeated practice. The confrontation of theory with the artist's practical ways of approaching problems sheds new light on the coexistence and interpenetration of the terms: poetics and practice. Moreover, it allows you to take a look at contemporary writing trends. Cultural poetics and practice of Joanna Bator supplements the research issues within cultural studies and also expands the issue of creative writing. This is the first monograph devoted entirely to the Joanna Bator’s works, taking up cultural studies tropes such as: feminism, Others and Strangers, micro-narratives, place and non-place, generational and social conflicts, transgenerative traumas, cultural determinism, relationships with parents, psychoanalysis, somatopoetics, language constructing reality, travel as therapy, constructing identity, writing - a way of survival, therapeutic role of sadness, anthropology, autoethnography, postmodernism, wound, scar, lack, loss, consumerism, lifestyle trends (vegetarianism, minimalism, wabi-sabi).

Author(s): Magdalena Rosińska-Bukowska,Klaudia Zielińska-Lont / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: international economy; international trade; international competitiveness; transnational corporations; foreign direct investment; economic openness; international economic relations

The monograph presents, in the form of nine case studies, an examination of the changes taking place in the most powerful economies, representing three regions of the world: Europe, North and South America and Asia. An assessment of the international competitiveness of the world's leading economies has been undertaken, considering key areas of a modern economy, including international activity, trade, investment and business,.The study examines: Germany, France, the UK (including Northern Ireland), the United States of America, Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan and India.A common framework for studying each economy was used, including: analysis of basic economic indicators; identification of membership in international organisations; analysis of the structure of international trade; examination of foreign direct investment flows; identification of transnational corporations hosted and an assessment of the degree of openness of the respective national economy. Each of the analyses is supplemented with a comprehensive study of the international competitiveness on the basis of a systemically-balanced model (developed by M. Rosińska-Bukowska). In assessing the competitiveness of economies for each of the 4 levels (micro-, meso-, macro- and meta-economic level), identical parameters were studied for the selected country group in order to ensure comparability of the results. In order to facilitate a regional approach, three economies from the different parts of the world were selected: Europe, the Americas and Asia. Indicators were used to compare the rate of economic development, changes in the value of imports, exports, GDP and HDI, the relationship between the economic situation and fluctuations in selected parameters, as well as country’s involvement in international initiatives regulating political and trade relations. The analyses presented cover the period 2005-2021, for foreign direct investment the period is 1990-2021.

The humanistic image of old age Premises for humanistic gerontology

Humanistyczny obraz starości Przesłanki dla gerontologii humanistycznej

Author(s): Elżbieta Dubas / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: old age; humanistic gerontology; dignity of the person; holistic experience of life

The study, which is an attempt to sketch the image of old age in relation to humanistic values and its holistic approach, takes into account selected contexts. One of them is the perspective of triunity, i.e. the unity of body, psyche and spirit, and the others - the combined space of the inner and outer worlds and the objective and subjective dimensions of old age. In such a view, it is impossible to omit looking at old age in the context of multidimensional development and in the perspective of broadly understood learning. An attempt was also made to see the beauty in old age, if only because this is not a common way of viewing old age today. Space is also devoted to difficult existential experiences that are common to older people, in particular Alzheimer's disease. The category of "accompaniment on the way" turned out to be extremely accurate in describing the relationship between one person and another along the way of life and old age. From the drama of experiencing existential worries, the perspective of treating old age not only as a task and challenge, but also as a gift was derived. Aging can also be viewed as maturing, becoming fully human. And finally, the last context, with a strong current appeal in the 21st century – the perspective of the digital era, and here also an attempt to find a humanistic vision of old age. The indicated contexts emphasize the dignity of the elderly person and the holistic dimension of old age, resulting from the individual experience of the full life cycle, the overlap of experiences throughout life and the intertwining of individual experiences with a rich spectrum of internal and external determinants of old age and aging processes.

The importance of social innovations in the knowledge-based economy in the context of footwear sector solutions

The importance of social innovations in the knowledge-based economy in the context of footwear sector solutions

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: knowledge-based economy; Footwear and Clothing Industry; Social Innovation Development

The prepared scientific monograph entitled The importance of social innovations in the knowledge-based economy in the context of footwear sector solutions is an attempt to further exemplify social innovations by identifying real links between social need and a specific good, service, method and process, in the context of solutions used in the footwear industry. Poland is one of the leading European footwear manufacturers, ranking 7th in terms of production volume in the EU, with a market share of 2.5%. In addition, strong competition is observed in the industry, which is conducive to the emergence of new innovations. The work contains theoretical and practical references to innovations in the industry, such as examples of modifications of footwear materials that have been used in business practice, and their measurable effect is to improve the comfort of using footwear. The authors refer to the environmental aspects of innovation, indicating the directions of utilization of production residues of the footwear and tanning industry, including composites, granules, and biostimulants for plants. The subject matter taken up in the monograph is an important contribution to the development of further scientific research covering the footwear industry and its importance in developing social innovations in Poland and the world. Based on the obtained research results and statistical data analysis, we attempted to outline the prospects for the development of social innovations in the footwear industry until 2050. The book can be an interesting study for practitioners and theoreticians, particularly for scientists representing disciplines such as economics and finance, management sciences, materials engineering, or entrepreneurs looking for opportunities to finance innovation in various areas.

Barbara Hoff. The Queen of Creativity

Barbara Hoff. Królowa kreatywności

Author(s): Joanna Dobkowska-Kubacka,Aneta Pawłowska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Barbara Hoff; Hoffland; fashion; 20th century; People's Republic of Poland; "Przekrój"

The publication presents the life and work of Barbara Hoff, a Polish fashion designer and creator of the Hoffland brand. The protagonist is descended from the pre-war working intelligentsia, a graduate in art history from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Her relationship with fashion dates back to 1954, when she began a permanent collaboration with the weekly magazine "Przekrój". From the 1960s, her original "Hoff Collection" appeared in the magazine. In 1967, the models created by Hoff, sewn by the Warsaw-based clothing manufacturer Cora, went on sale at the Central Department Store in Warsaw. This was the beginning of Hoff's creation of fashion collections intended for the mass public of the communist era. In 1969, the stall was located in the CDT "Junior", and from 1977 onwards it bore the official name "Hoffland". In the 1970s and 1980s, the modern and functional yet relatively inexpensive clothing designed by Hoff was perceived by Polish society as a welcome breath of the West. The collections were extremely successful. It is worth noting that the success of the brand was helped by the "Przekrój" magazine promoting it and the excellent models and photographers associated with the venture. The Hoffland brand is still associated today with many popular designs such as colourful plastic sandals or multicoloured T-shirts or simple cotton bags with a large company logo. Although the stand survived the turbulent years of the political transformation, the pressure of Western fashion concerns led to the closure of Hoffland in 2007. The book is based on numerous, press interviews given by Barbara Hoff, her own texts as well as the archives of the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź and the files of the Institute of National Remembrance.

Social Alienation in the Age of Globalisation on the Basis of Aldo Nove’s Work

Alienacja społeczna w dobie globalizacji na przykładzie twórczości Alda Novego

Author(s): Dominika Kobylska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: modern literature; Italian literaturę; pulp; giovani cannibali; alienation

The analysis showed in the present monograph aims to provide the answers to the research questions and hypotheses concerning the phenomenon of the social alienation in the age of globalization showed in the prose of Aldo Nove, an Italian writer born in 1967 in Viggiù. On the basis of the modern interpretation of the term of alienation by Rahel Jaeggi and its previous definitions – for example by Marx – there were analyzed selected works of the Italian writer written from the 1990s to 2018. The book is divided in five chapters: the first one is devoted to the methodological approach, the second one to the reception of the writer’s work in Poland and around the world, and the last three to the proper analysis of the texts, divided according to the subsequent stages of the writer’s career. The presented study proves that Nove shows contemporary society as alienated in the era of mass media and progressive consumerism. Such approach can be seen not only in the content of his works but also through their form and the character structure. In the last stage of his work, the author, despite his pessimistic vision of today’s world, provides the possible remedy for the human alienation. In order to show it, he refers to the search for transcendence in human life to find the relation with itself and with the world (including the supra-material one), which in turn makes his texts fit into the canon of post-secular literature.

Sociology of rural worlds in Poland and France: fieldwork and studies

Sociologie des mondes ruraux en Pologne et en France : terrains et études

Author(s): / Language(s): French

Keywords: rural sociology; rural worlds; territory; social structure; civic participation; culture; Poland; France

The publication presented to the reader is the result of a collaboration between sociologists from the University of Lyon II and the University of Lodz. However, recognized rural sociologists representing the academic centers of Warsaw, Krakow and Torun were invited to work jointly. The analysis of the social problems of rural areas in contemporary French and Polish societies arises both from the importance of this structural element for the two countries and from the desire to continue the long tradition of cooperation. The volume opens with texts evoking the main trends in long-term research undertaken in the rural environment, both in France and in Poland. Then there are synthetic presentations of the dynamics of the social structure in rural areas of Poland between 1991 and 2015, as well as the social problems of peri-urban areas in France. The following texts present an empirical dimension of the quality of life of Polish farmers in the era of globalization; and address the transformation of neighborhood relations in French rural communities located in peri-urban areas. Then, innovative activities of NGOs within local socio-spatial structures; as well as the transformations of folk culture in central Poland, are presented. The volume ends with a text devoted to the analysis of civic participation of residents of rural areas in Poland and France based on data from the European Social Survey. The texts brought together in this monograph concern the current social situation in France and Poland, seen from the perspectives of territory, social structure, culture and life organizations.

The Woman Artist: Essays in memory of Dorota Filipczak

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: Woman; artist; feminism; Dorota Filipczak

The volume, honoring Professor Dorota Filipczak, whose energetic and fruitful academic career was cut short in 2021, offers a contribution to literary criticism and culture studies, the areas on which her own scholarly endeavors centered. The theme of “the woman artist” was of particular significance both for Filipczak’s inquiry into the work of writers such as Alice Munro, Jane Urquhart, Michèle Roberts or Margaret Laurence, and for her own poetic practice. Rather than focus on her achievements in various fields (as scholar, writer, teacher, poet, and translator), the texts collected in this volume go beyond remembrance and the honoring of an established scholar’s remarkable feats. Despite their undeniable commemorative role, the chapters are an attempt to carry Dorota Filipczak’s academic endeavors forward, into the future, with her own texts serving as prologue and inspiration. The contributors to the volume — representing various fields of the academia — are her friends, colleagues and collaborators, and the essays eloquently testify to her intellectual influence. From more personal reflections and ruminations inspired by Filipczak’s life and work to articles exploring the work of a range of women artists, the volume offers an investigation of various approaches to autobiography, tensions between public personas and private selves, subversive performative personas, transcending religious frameworks of bodily discipline, as well as “toggling” between the human and the nonhuman.

A Samuel Beckett Handbook

Beckett. Przewodnik

Author(s): Stanley E. Gontarski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Samuel Beckett; British drama; theatre of the absurd; post-war drama; theatre performance

Stanley Gontarski’s A Samuel Beckett Handbook offers a thorough and comprehensive introduction to dramatic writings of Samuel Beckett. The analytical part is divided into two sections: the first one covers major plays (Eleutheria, Waiting for Godot, Endgame, Krapp’s Last Tape, Happy Days), the second concerns shorter plays. This analytical material is accompanied with very inspiring and thorough presentations of Beckett’s work for the theatre, his directorial style and his writings for film. The interpretative part of the book is preceded with Beckett timeline, presenting major dates and turning points both in his private life and artistic career. This complex approach to Beckett’s dramatic and theatre art makes A Samuel Beckett Handbook into a very useful and scholarly introduction to the writings of the Irish author. An added asset of the publication is the fact that Gontarski extensively uses various available archives and Beckett’s manuscripts, which opens an entirely new perspective on our understanding of canonical works by the author of Waiting for Godot. In its overall view, A Samuel Beckett Handbook also connects Beckett’s writing with the tradition of European art and literature, showing his oeuvre as a continuity but also as innovation within the canon.
