Autobiography-Biography-Narration. Research Practice for Biographical Perspectives

Autobiography-Biography-Narration. Research Practice for Biographical Perspectives

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: narrative research;biographical research;biography;autobiography;narration;biographical perspective

This volume includes eight complementary articles that relate to the empirical, methodological, analytical, interpretive and theoretical aspects of the narrative-biographical research. The basic linking assumption of these works is a departure from the trend, still dominant in Poland and especially visible in the social sciences, modeled on the ideas taken from the natural sciences. The co-authors of Autobiography―Biography―Narration, positioning themselves between their source areas of knowledge (pedagogy, psychology, anthropology, sociology and literary studies) and a transdisciplinary auto/biographical research plane, pick up as their starting point the processual perspective of the socio-cultural world, whose central element is the active subject as the creator of his/her own biography. Suchassumptions (expressed explicitly and implicitly) provided the basis forreports on the Authors’ own research projects (cf. in particular the textsby Karolina Dudek and Anna Kurpiel) and a framework for ordering the purely theoretical aspects of narrative-biographical studies (cf. the articleby Katarzyna Gajek).

Library Internal Marketing in Theory and Practice Based on the Libraries of Łódź Voivodeship

Biblioteczny marketing wewnętrzny w teorii i praktyce na przykładzie bibliotek województwa łódzkiego

Author(s): Mariola Antczak,Magdalena Kalińska-Kula / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: internal communication in a library;libraries in Łódź Voivodeship;library marketing;internal marketing

The monograph presents research concerning activities of internal marketing in libraries of Łódź Voivodeship. An extensive theoretical part contains a discussion on the role of libraries in the contemporary information society and an analysis of the internal marketing concept. The authors, drawing on a comprehensive body of literature to realize their research goals, refer to existing legal regulations and define contemporary functions, tasks, missions of libraries. Then they try to explain the essence and meaning of internal marketing in the contemporary library. The research part presents empirical study results concerning the following issues: practical elements of internal marketing (e.g. internal communication, motivation system, organizational culture), the evaluation of internal marketing by employees, and confrontation of employees’ expectations with the actual state of affairs. An exhaustive bibliography of publications concerning library marketing – starting from the earliest, published in 1991 – is an important supplement to the book. A strong point of the monograph is its interdisciplinary nature: the reader receives a reliable scientific study accomplished by a library specialist and information science researcher and an expert in the field of marketing.

The Educational Value of Children's Questions

Edukacyjna wartość dziecięcych pytań

Author(s): Jolanta Bonar,Anna Buła / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: philosophizing with children;inquisitive thinking;child's cognitive activity;child's cognitive curiosity;early childhood education

Paying attention to the role of questions in stimulating children's cognitive activity at the elementary education stage is absolutely necessary and significant because this phase is crucial and critical in the development of all basic cognitive skills of students. […] The authors discuss research results and scientific topics with panache and linguistic ease. This is demonstrated by the use of language that is positively marked by subjectivity and vividness. The image of the phenomenon is made specific and subjected to scrutiny in the context of personal experiences, thoughts, but also the current state of knowledge and trends of scientific thought development in the relevant area of study. It should be emphasized that the authors illustrate their theoretical considerations with the results of their own research, which imparts significant value and strength to the formulated theses. The empirical basis is very interesting and contains great interpretative potential. From the review by dr hab. Renata Michalak, prof. UAM

Virtualizing the lives of people with disabilities

Wirtualizacja życia osób z niepełnosprawnością

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: disability; virtualization of life; Internet; online education; digital competence

Papers presented in the monograph respond to the situation that has arisen in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences relating both to the presence of information technology in all areas of social life and the pervasiveness of its use. Therefore, the publication aims to illustrate the complexity and dynamics of the ongoing virtualization processes of social life and their impact on the functioning of people with disabilities, also considering recent events related to the global epidemic. Individual chapters in the book focus on, among other things: how people with disabilities use the Internet, online education and digital competencies for people with disabilities, virtual civic participation, and social and political activism by people with disabilities. Significant emphasis was also placed on the application dimension of the texts prepared. The publication combines both the features of a scientific paper, based on the individual authors' research, and conclusions in the form of recommendations.

Plant names as a reflection of the rural world (based on material from Kuyavian dialect)

Nazwy roślin jako zwierciadło wiejskiego świata (na materiale gwary kujawskiej)

Author(s): Agnieszka Wierzbicka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: plant names; dialectical plant names; linguistic picture of the world; Kuyavia

This monograph presents plant names functioning in the Kuyavian dialect. The author made an effort to recreate the nomination process for 108 plant species: wild plants, crops, water plants, trees, shrubs and prostrate shrubs. Utilizing detailed etymological and semantic analyses of names gathered during field research and the recreation of linguistic image of the world, she has unveiled a remarkably rich and colorful world of the Kuyavians. In her research, she has proven that for the Kuyavians, the methods of creating names and their categorization are a reflection of the world of nature that surrounds humans, underscore its renewability and make the world organized, often via use of antinomy (cultivated — uncultivated, useful — useless, harmful — harmless, therapeutic — non-therapeutic, fragrant — stinking, hard — soft, huge — small, magical — ordinary etc.). Phytonyms analyzed in this monograph unveil their meanings, but also emotions and beliefs of the Kuyavian folk to the reader and are a reflection of a peculiar, fixed in tradition, anthropocentric view of the world and often naive etymologies. That kind of vision strongly deviates from the scientific perception of reality and leads researchers into unknown territory, which often eludes clear classification.

Classical and non-classical methods of income inequality analysis

Klasyczne i nieklasyczne metody analizy nierówności dochodowych

Author(s): Alina Jędrzejczak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: income distribution; income inequality; economic distance; gender gap; inequality decomposition

The work takes up a broadly understood statistical methodology regarding the analysis of income distribution and income inequality. Recently, there has been an increase in interest in researching inequality, injustice and poverty, as well as in the practical dimension of these studies. The monograph presents a wide range of inequality measures, derived from various approaches: descriptive, axiomatic and normative, including the Gini, Theil and Zenga coefficients. Their interrelationships and the specificity of each of them have been analysed. The importance and value of point measures (as opposed to synthetic ones) were emphasized. The concept of income inequality analysis has also been extended to inequality between income distributions. In this regard, a wide range of approaches is presented, with the possibility of focusing on selected aspects of differences between distributions - for example, on the deprivation of a distinguished group. Approaches based on relative distribution and generalized measures of economic dominance are described, as well as a family of measures of income inequality based on quantiles. In addition to theoretical considerations, empirical analyzes based on individual data were also carried out, concerning the distribution of household income in Poland in various divisions. These analyses covered the period 2014–2020, which made it possible to assess the impact on income inequality on the one hand of the Covid-19 pandemic, and on the other hand, of rapid economic growth and social programs. Comparative analyzes of income distributions in Poland and Italy were also carried out, including gender gap analyses.

Accessible art for the blind and visually impaired in London museums

Sztuka dostępna dla niewidomych i niedowidzących odbiorców w londyńskich muzeach

Author(s): Anna Wendorff / Language(s): English,Polish

Keywords: audio description; translation studies; museum institutions; anthropology of the senses

This is the first time that a Polish academic has discussed the experience of teaching the disabled in British museums. The book exemplifies the researcher’s professionalism and expertise in the discussed area on a global scale. From a review by Professor Waldemar Deluga, PhDIn her publication, the author interestingly juxtaposes topics that are usually dealt with separately, namely audio description, anthropology of the senses and accessibility in museums. lt is especially engaging to follow the analysis of these three components and their intersection in one book. The case study of London museums is also noteworthy, as it may be of particular interest to Polish readers: art historians, museologists and those concerned with accessibility in museum institutions. The monograph has an interdisciplinary character, drawing on research in art history, translation studies and anthropology, which I consider to be its greatest strength. I also highly appreciate the presented case study of London museums, which can become an example of good practice for Polish artists, curators and museum professionals. From a review by Associate Professor Łukasz Chmielewski, PhD

The Biographical Experience of Entering the Academic Profession. Popular-Class Lecturers at the Post-Socialist University

Author(s): Kamil Łuczaj / Language(s): English

Keywords: upward mobility; social class; higher education; Poland; cleft habitus; non-reproduction

This book is devoted to upwardly mobile university lecturers or people who “escaped the collective fate of their class”. The upward mobility of the academic faculty is under-researched in the peripheries of global knowledge production, although there is a significant interest in the social mobility of students. Up until now, no author has explicitly raised the question of how mobility is possible in a post-socialist higher education system, what emotional mechanisms it involves, and how mobility translates into cultural practices of upwardly mobile individuals.

Ethics in the system of education in selected Western countries (France, Spain, Portugal)

Etyka w systemie edukacji w wybranych krajach świata zachodniego (Francja, Hiszpania, Portugalia)

Author(s): Joanna Miksa / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: civic education; ethics; human rights; citizen

The book contains a presentation of ministerial curricula for ethical education subjects in France, Spain and Portugal. Ethical education in these countries is carried out in the form of citizenship education. The book composes of three chapters. In each chapter there is a brief outline of the history of debates held in the public sphere, which accompanied the introduction of subsequent forms of ethical education in selected countries. In the second part of each chapter, there are translations of the core curriculum documents for subjects in the field of ethics and citizenship education in France, Spain and Portugal respectively.

Rethinking Asia in World Politics

Rethinking Asia in World Politics

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: South China Sea; People Republic of China; United States; Asia; Cambodia; Humanized birth; Taiwan issue; cross-strait relations; crisis; ASEAN; diplomatic mission

This book explores the dynamic and multifaceted landscape of Asia's role in global affairs, with a particular focus on the redistribution of power and its implications for Asian-European relations. As the largest continent in the world, Asia holds a pivotal position as a global crossroad, connecting diverse regions and playing a crucial role in international trade and shipping. Its vast landmass and expansive coastline make it an essential hub for economic activities and a strategic link between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The book delves into the growing economic and military power of Asian nations, which has led to heightened competition for influence on political and economic issues, significantly impacting global security and stability. Asia's re-evaluation in global affairs has transformed it from being considered primarily as a recipient or observer to being recognized as a central player shaping regional and global dynamics. The text examines this transformation across various international organizations, where Asian countries actively engage in decision-making processes, contribute to regional cooperation, and promote integration. The book discusses the implications of territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the influence of major powers like China and Japan, which have intensified geopolitical competition in the region. Additionally, it addresses ongoing conflicts and challenges faced by Asia, such as separatist movements and humanitarian crises, with far-reaching implications for regional stability and attracting attention from the international community. Utilizing a comprehensive research approach, the book incorporates literature reviews, data collection, case studies, comparative analysis, and an interdisciplinary perspective. These methodologies provide a robust foundation for understanding the evolving landscape of Asia's role in global affairs and the complexities of its relations with European countries. In conclusion, this scientific publication offers valuable insights into the ever-changing dynamics of Asia's significance in the global arena. It aims to contribute to the scholarly discourse by providing a well-rounded analysis of the subject matter, inviting readers to further explore the complexities and implications of Asia's evolving role in international relations.

Women leaders of the social economy. Case studies

Liderki gospodarki społecznej. Studia przypadków

Author(s): Janusz Reichel / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Women leaders; management styles; manager characteristics; social economy; social cooperative

The monograph is the result of the author's interest in the issues of the social economy and non-governmental organizations, which are often animators of the creation of social economy entities. This work focuses on women leaders running social economy entities, their management styles and, to some extent, business models. After preliminary remarks on the social economy itself and social cooperatives, attention was focused on women leaders, including in the context of the issue discussed in the literature of the characteristics of people in managerial positions and the management styles they present. The main part of the work is the presentation of the collected case studies. The study aimed to identify problems and challenges in managing a social economy entity by women, both in the context of relationships with clients and the environment, as well as staff management. Attention was paid to success factors, obstacles to the development of the organization, characteristics of women leaders and their self-esteem. The interviews focused on obtaining the personal opinion of women managing and/or founding a social enterprise and their history (herstory). First, a series of individual case studies based on material from interviews was presented, then they were synthesized as a multiple case study and, on this basis, final remarks were formulated.

System of integrated development planning in Polish conditions (assumptions – guiding principles – concept)

System zintegrowanego planowania rozwoju w warunkach polskich. Założenia – zasady kierunkowe – koncepcja

Author(s): Tadeusz Markowski,Dominik Drzazga / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: spatial planning; strategic planning; integrated planning; spatial policy; development policy; public policy; public administration & development management

This scientific work deals with the issues of integration of spatial planning and development planning, in the context of the recomendations to introduce systemic reforms in Poland to improve the procedures for development management by the central and local government public administration. The basis for the development of the author's concept of system solutions in the field of integrated planning were literature studies in the field of economics development issues, public management, planning, spatial management and urban planning, as well as political philosophy and a specially organized series of seminars and scientific debates among experts dealing with the theory and practice of planning, as well as the authors' own experience resulting from the research projects and scientific expert work on national, regional and local strategic documents. The thesis has been divided into two parts, the first of which is entitled: "Theoretical foundations and formal premises of integrated development planning", and the second: "The concept of an integrated development planning system". Part I. consists of chapters 1-8, which discuss the axiological and political foundations of planning, the issue of public interest in planning, contemporary civilization conditions determining the urban planning doctrine, development of planning methods and techniques, issues of flexibility in planning as an instrument of public intervention to solve market failure, the sustainable development paradigm and government administration initiatives undertaken since 1989 to reform the development and spatial planning system. Part II. of this thesis consists of chapters 9-14, in which the general assumptions of the recommended changes are discussed, and then a detailed description of the new types of planning and strategic documents postulated for introduction into the planning system at all levels of the country's territorial division is made. The next part of the work discusses the role and possible organization of public planning offices, general principles of social participation in planning, as well as the initial conditions and transitional solutions related to the introduction of the recommended integrated planning system.

Contemporary challenges of transport, freight forwarding and logistics - selected aspects

Współczesne wyzwania transportu, spedycji oraz logistyki – wybrane aspekty

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: transport; freight forwarding; logistics; sustainable development; green supply chain; cultural differences; e-mobility market; mobility hubs; e-commerce; artificial intelligence

Along with socio-economic developments, we are seeing further challenges to which business managers in various areas of the economy must respond. These changes are not only due to the increasing spread of new technologies, but also to global crises and trends. The need to respect the principles of sustainability throughout the supply chain is being increasingly emphasised. For this reason, this publication is devoted to selected contemporary challenges related to transport, forwarding and logistics in this context. The monograph is the fruit of cooperation between employees of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of Łódź and students and graduates of the following faculties: logistics and logistics in economy. The result is a study which considers the experiences of the youngest generation entering the labour market or taking their first steps in logistics-related professions. The interaction between students and staff has made it possible to draw several conclusions that can provide valuable guidance for both future researchers and practitioners implementing various types of solutions in business areas related to transport, forwarding and logistics.

Public communication and right-wing extremism

Öffentliche Kommunikation und Rechtsextremismus

Author(s): Marek Czyżewski / Language(s): German

Keywords: public discourse; accountability; symbolic elites; debates on right-wing extremism in Germany; discourse analysis; sociology of knowledge; hate crimes; violence; intermediary work

This study has two focal points. One relates to the processes in public communication mediated by the mass media and is primarily concerned with debates in public discourse - regardless of their thematic focus - and with the role of symbolic elites. The other focus specifically concerns public constructions of right-wing extremism and public confrontations of the symbolic elites with right-wing extremism. For the most part, the period examined consists of the particular escalation of right-wing extremist violence in Germany between August 1992 and January 1993 in terms of the development of the discourse on this escalation. Thus, public debates and discussions about right-wing extremism are analysed against the background of general characteristics and tendencies in public communication. Priority is given to the analytical and critical examination of general problems of public communication. For many reasons, the debates on right-wing extremism carried out in the public discourse of the symbolic elites represent a particularly revealing field of observation with regard to the general characteristics, tendencies and deficits of public communication.

Combinatorial point configurations and polytopes

Author(s): Sergiy Yakovlev,Oksana Pichugina,Liudmyla Koliechkina / Language(s): English

Keywords: Finite point configuration; combinatorial point configuration; combinatorial polytope; multipermutation; partial permutation

The monograph is dedicated to exploring combinatorial point configurations derived from mapping a set of combinatorial configurations into Euclidean space. Various methods for this mapping, along with the typology and properties of the resultant configurations, are presented. In addition, the study revolves around combinatorial polytopes defined as convex hulls of combinatorial point configurations. The primary focus lies in examining multipermutation and partial multipermutation point configurations alongside their associated combinatorial polytopes known as multipermutohedra and partial multipermutohedra. Our theoretical contributions are substantiated through the proof of theorems and supporting auxiliary statements. Examples and illustrations are included to enhance the comprehension of the material.
