Hybrid Dynamic and Fuzzy Models of Morality

Hybrid Dynamic and Fuzzy Models of Morality

Author(s): Agnieszka Rossa,Lesław Socha,Andrzej Szymański / Language(s): English

Keywords: static and dynamic hybrid models; fuzzy models of morality; fuzzy numbers; mortality model; hybrid models; linear scalar filters

Mortality is generally considered relatively easy to forecast, particularly when the forecasting horizon is short. In longer periods however, its course may be affected by various changes brought about by all kinds of disturbances and events, A case in point is the health crisis in Poland of the 1970s and 1980s [Okólski 2003], In such cases, it is of key importance that appropriate assumptions and an adequate model are selected. Mortality forecasting is usually supported by extrapolative models, making use of the regularity found in age patterns and trends of death rates or probabilities over time. There are several reasons why one should learn more about mortality models. Forecasting of mortality has a wide range of applications outside the field of statistics and mathematics. It is of fundamental importance in such areas as funding of public or private pensions and life insurance. Annuity providers and policy makers use mortality projections to determine appropriate pension benefits, to assess retirement income or life insurance products, to hold additional reserving capital or to manage the long term demographic risk. Thus, one of the important question arises: What is the best way to forecast future mortality rates and to model the uncertainty of such forecasts? A key input to address this question is the development of advanced mortality modeling methodology. These notes are an attempt to capture the stochastic nature of mortality by approaching the subject of mortality modeling and forecasting from a new theoretical point of view, using theory of stochastic differential equations, theory of fuzzy numbers and complex numbers. The book is addressed to tertiary students, doctoral students and specialists in the fields of demography, life insurance, statistics and economics. This research project was funded by the National Science Center pursuant to its decision no. 2015/17/B/HS4/00927.

Social world of Theatre. Arenas of Public Dramatic Theatres in Poland

Społeczny świat teatru. Areny polskich publicznych teatrów dramatycznych

Author(s): Emilia Zimnica-Kuzioła / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: social world of theater in Poland; arenas of the social world; actors of Polish public dramatic theaters; społeczny świat teatru w Polsce; areny społecznego świata; aktorzy polskich publicznych teatrów dramatycznych

The aim of the book is a scientific analysis of the social world of contemporary Polish dramatic theater as a space of action and discourse. The author is primarily interested in the arena of public theater, that is, the place of dispute, discussion, polemics between the participants of this universe. As Prof. Przemysław Kisiel writes, "the value of the reviewed monograph results first of all from a skilful delineation of the theoretical framework of the analysis and from the high substantive competences of the author, allowing for a thorough sociological analysis of the theater community in Poland. The value of the monograph is also demonstrated by a skilful linkage of empirical material gathered by the author as a result of her own field research with materials from other sources. "

The Dispute About the Middle Ages. Some Reflections on the Cultural Identity of Europe: J. Le Goff, J. Kloczowski, A. Gurevic

Spór o średniowiecze. Z rozważań nad tożsamością kulturową Europy. Jacques Le Goff, Jerzy Kłoczowski, Aron Guriewicz

Author(s): Anna M. Brzezińska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: medievalism; Russian historiography; Soviet historiography; Polish historiography; French historiography; historical anthropology; intellectual history; history of ideas; European history; cultural identity; Annales

The book is a proposal of reading the works of the leading European medievalists of the twentieth century in the cultural context of medievalism, understood here as a belief in the fundamental role of the Middle Ages for the development of a specifically European system of values. An innovative idea was to use a comparative perspective for three historiographic traditions: Polish, French and Russian. Inscribing into the “bright legend” of the Middle Ages through perceiving such values as respecting differences with respect for local tradition, subsidiarity and solidarity towards the community, the three historians indicate the basic features of European unity, actively shaping the debate on the identity of contemporary Europe.

Financial participation programs and company results. Polish case in comparison to other EU countries

Programy partycypacji finansowej a wyniki przedsiębiorstw. Polska na tle innych krajów UE

Author(s): Maciej Kozłowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: workers’ ownership; financial participation; profit sharing; stock option

The main area of focus in deliberations on financial participation is the range of problems referring to the functioning of enterprises and increasing their effectiveness. These problems highlight the need to search for mechanisms or methods that will guarantee that all employees aim at fulfilling the company’s goals, and that there exists a common sense of responsibility and unity of interests. Financial participation programs contribute to achieving better financial and social results by a company. This thesis defines the major purpose of the work, which is to review the most important forms of financial participation schemes in European countries and in Polish companies. This will expand the knowledge on the subject as well as serve the pragmatic purpose of making it possible to present conclusions and deliberations which may become a starting point for commencing future actions focused on improving the situation with respect to the implementation and realization of financial participation programs, as well as to provide proposed examples of model solutions which may facilitate a broader implementation of participation in companies.

Financing of Theatre Academies in Poland

Finansowanie uczelni teatralnych w Polsce

Author(s): Agnieszka Orankiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: theatre academies; financing of culture; culture economy

The main reason for taking up the subject of this book was the need to identify the possibility of financing cultural activities of theatrical public universities. Determining the effective method of obtaining extra-budgetary resources is important from the point of view of the development of both the surveyed entities and the broadly understood theater art. The activity undertaken by the theatrical schools has an impact on the implementation of cultural policy in the country and region, contributes to the broadening of the artistic offer and creates the opportunity to assimilate society with culture. The book is also theoretical and empirical. It retains a high degree of theoretical conceptualizations, and also contains a lot of detailed, practical information, in many places becoming a handbook that facilitates orientation in the possibilities of financing cultural projects. The empirical part may also have a source value for future researchers in cultural economics. The book is addressed to representatives of a wide range of academic disciplines: economics, cultural studies, theater studies, management, but also to cultural managers, decision makers associated with the public and private sector of financing culture, and students of economics and humanities.

Barriers in the Cooperation of Local Government Units of Functional Urban Areas. The Case of Łódź Voivodeship

Bariery we współpracy jednostek samorządu terytorialnego miejskich obszarów funkcjonalnych. Przykład województwa łódzkiego

Author(s): Małgorzata Żak-Skwierczyńska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: functional urban areas;local authority;local government units;non-governmental organizations;local action groups;public administration

Representatives of science and practicians have for years been looking for ways to shape durable competitive advantages of the country's economy. Their goal has been to find out what actions taken under development policy lead to increasing the competitiveness of individual territories. The territorial and integrated approach to development is increasingly breaking through, which in practice has been reduced to functional areas, including urban functional areas, consisting of the central city and its surroundings, which is the area for the interactive spread of phenomena and processes occurring in the centre.Unfortunately, blockades within urban functional areas have a negative impact on building competitive advantages based on modern factors which rely on human and territorial capital. The publication discusses the cooperation of local government units in Łódź Voivodeship with various partners within urban functional areas, with particular regard to barriers which translate into joint actions for the development of cities and their surroundings. The assessment of the phenomena occurring in this area has made it possible to formulate recommendations for further intervention aimed at improving the cooperation. The results of the research undertaken show particular utility for social and economic development of various territories and can be a starting point for the formulation and implementation of solutions to build relationships between various entities participating in the development processes.

Keywords: philosophy of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance;ancient thinkers;ancient philosophers;constitutionalism;political and legal doctrines;human freedom;reformation

The three-volume monograph offers a comprehensive study of the category of freedom which was used in the legal and political doctrines by representatives of the western civilization since antiquity up to the present. The publication reviews concepts put forward by ancient thinkers (Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Cicero, St. Augustine), propositions of philosophers active in the Middle Ages (St. Thomas, William of Ockham) and the most prominent theories of the Renaissance (Machiavelli, the Renaissance utopias, Reformation, the School of Salamanca). The Polish Renaissance thought has also been presented. It ushered in an antiquity tradition revival which manifested itself in treatises in 16th-century republican discourse and, in a developed form, in the works of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro. The monograph also includes interpretations of Thomas Hobbes’s, Algernon Sidney’s and John Locke’s propositions as well as a study of the thought of Montesquieu together with a discussion of the theory of the separation of powers, especially with regard to the trias politica model from the perspective of constitutionalism. The review of numerous philosophical positions reveals a range of discrepancies in the perception of the concept of freedom not only in different historical periods but also among the representatives of the main political doctrines. The plethora of cited approaches unequivocally points to the interdisciplinary character of research on freedom as a philosophical category. Therefore, a presentation of the spectrum of differences through the application of scientific analysis seems a fundamental prerequisite for any attempt at arriving at a comprehensive and multilevel understanding of the idea of freedom.

Keywords: political philosophy;individual freedom;democracy;John Paul II;Nietzsche;national socialism;Trotsky

The three-volume monograph offers a comprehensive study of the category of freedom as it has been used in the legal and political doctrines by representatives of the western civilization since antiquity up to the present. The third volume contains analyses of political thought from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The publication reviews concepts put forward by Friedrich Nietzsche, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky as well as interpretations of various aspects of freedom expressed in the propositions of Spanish traditionalist (Carlist) thought, German revolutionary conservatives and the doctrine of national socialism. The present volume also includes studies concerned with the idea of liberalism (Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich August von Hayek, Milton Friedman, Isaiah Berlin, James M. Buchanan, John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin), socialism (the history and ideas of the Prague Spring, the New Left movement), Catholic social teaching (John Paul II), libertarianism (Robert Nozick), republicanism (Quentin Skinner), feminism and communitarianism. Moreover, the reader will find here a cross-sectional analysis of the importance of the concept of freedom in contemporary democracy and two articles on the methodology and typology of the category of freedom. The comparison of the presented views reveals the scale of discrepancies in the perception of the issue of freedom not only in different periods, but also between representatives of the main political doctrines.

Private Lives of Poles in the Nineteenth Century. Volume 8. About Men – (Un)usually

Życie prywatne Polaków w XIX wieku. Tom VIII. O mężczyźnie (nie)zwyczajnie

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish nobility;aristocracy;Polish intelligentsia;Romaticism

The leitmotif of the eighth volume of Private Lives of Poles in the Nineteenth Century is the world of a nineteenth-century man approached from the angle of privacy. The issue of masculinity has become the subject of research in Polish humanities relatively recently. The historiography on the era usually portrays men from the perspective of public activity, paid work, participation in military campaigns and national uprisings, as well as through the roles set in social consciousness, augmented by the standards and canons observed at the time. The authors of the publication present men in an (un)usual way – from the perspective of their everyday life, private relations, inner emotions, their childhood, physical and mental identity, perception of civilizational, cultural and social changes and reactions to the empowerment of women. The main characters in the volume are Polish men from different social milieux, at various stages in life, with diverse educational background, living within the historical Polish territory as well as dispersed over other parts of Europe. These are men not only playing important roles in the society, men whose biographies are commonly known, but also actors completely unknown.

It is preceded by an article introducing the problem of creativity, pointing to different ways of understanding it in contemporary linguistic discourse. Stigma in the Process of Democtratization. An Example of Homelessness

Piętno w procesie demokratyzacji. Przykład bezdomności

Author(s): Małgorzata Kostrzyńska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: stigma; stigmatization; homelessness; help; the process of association forming

This monograph describes experiences of the world without home, which are the result of accompanying closely people experiencing homelessness by the researcher, her engagement in their everyday affairs and cooperation promoting changes. Each research involved a few-years participation and was a socially committed research. The aim of this publication is to present the signs of a stigma in the process of democratisation as well as the paradoxes that become a part of this process, as a result of social mechanisms of institutional help, perpetuated stereotypes and relations with those who bear the stigma. Here, homelessness has become an example allowing us to observe social and educational phenomena related to various social groups interacting at the intersection of two worlds: that of the ordinary and that of those bearing the stigma. The purposefulness of entering into mixed interactions as part of e.g. organisations or associations, as presented in this monograph, is an example of maintaining the stigma in its bearers and reveals a certain power play, entangled in seemingly noble ideas. The first chapter presents the ways of understanding the key theoretical categories in this work, i.e. those of homelessness and stigmatisation. In the second chapter the democratisation process is depicted together with the paradoxes involved. It directly discloses the mechanisms of exclusion and reinforcing homelessness, or instrumental treatment of the idea of creating associations. The third chapter presents an analysis of specific strategies used by people experiencing homelessness in order to adapt to the democratization process. The fourth chapter shows the democratisation process difficulties in the field of aid directed at the stigmatized.

On the output of Andrzej Zimniak

O twórczości Andrzeja Zimniaka

Author(s): Adam Mazurkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Polish literature after 1945; science fiction; popularization of knowledge

The monographic outline is devoted to the work of Andrzej Zimniak. He is a writer who has been active creatively since 1980. Not only the most well-known aspect of his writing, i.e. science fiction, is included; the artist's popular science essays were also recalled, which is combined with fiction and not very well-known poetry (Zimniak is the author of one volume, entitled “Fraszki rubaszne” [Epigrams coarse], 2012). The overriding goal of the monograph was to show the evolution of selected motifs, the most characteristic of Zimniak's prose, which at the same time are reflected in the popular science reflection of this writer (these include m.in the possibility of contact with extraterrestrial civilization, potential ways of human self-evolution to the level of “homo superior”, ecological themes and reflection on the challenges posed by expansive – and at the same time less and less controllable – technological progress. The issues listed here have been discussed in the broad context of civilizational, social and political changes, which significantly affect Zimniak as a writer and popularizer of science, active from 1980 to the present day. This context is accompanied by a reconstruction of the evolution of the writer's philosophical and anthropological views, which are a reflection of the times in which he created. The monograph was accompanied by a bibliography constructed in such a way that it not only attested to the works referred to in the considerations. First of all, it is to be a starting point for the reader's own reading searches interested in deepening knowledge on the topics discussed in the study.

Politics, culture and society in times of pandemic. Selected Issues.

Polityka, kultura i społeczeństwo w czasach pandemii. Wybrane zagadnienia

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: pandemic; Internet; privacy; regulation; corporation

The coronavirus pandemic has caused significant changes to societies around the world. One such change deals with the privacy of user-generated data on the Internet. So far, this topic has been a margin of the debate on the problems related to the wider use of the Internet at work or in everyday life. There were phenomena aimed at introducing rules governing how to collect data about Internet users, but the effectiveness of these solutions is debatable. The necessity to transfer most of the daily activities to the Internet increased the interest in the problem of protecting privacy on the Internet, and commercial entities, so far reluctant to discuss this subject, began to introduce user-friendly solutions.

Person with intellectual disability. The identity dimension of self-determination and independence in the context of family life

Osoba z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Tożsamościowy wymiar samostanowienia i (nie)zależności w kontekście życia rodzinnego

Author(s): Jakub Niedbalski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: disability; person with intellectual disability; family; self-determination; identity

For young people, their transition into adulthood is commonly associated with a shift in social relationships, from families of origin to intimate relationships and one's own family; a shift from school to work; a shift from economic dependence to economic independence; and a shift toward the assumption of responsibility. When it comes to young people with intellectual disabilities, such 'milestones' are often difficult to achieve, and a status of an adult remains illusory. Therefore, the subject of the study was the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities and their family members (mainly parents) regarding the process of becoming independent and achieving autonomy and independence in life, as well as the barriers and obstacles that stood in the way of achieving them. Based on that, it has been attempted to determine what these experiences mean to individuals and how they understand them. The research interests are focused on everyday actions and practices of people with intellectual disabilities and their families, undertaken within interactions in life situations leading towards adulthood. Thus, the processual nature of changes taking place in generational families related to the growing up of children with intellectual disabilities was analyzed. The results of this study expand the knowledge in the field of entering into adulthood by young adults with intellectual disabilities by examining the process of negotiating autonomy in the family from the perspective of the young adults themselves and their parents. Hence, this study has shown that young people with intellectual disabilities not only have specific needs, but also views on their relationship with their parents. In this way, the results of the research can contribute to improved understanding of the needs of people with disabilities in the family, providing insight into how and to what extent young adults with intellectual disabilities need support at a crucial time in their lives, namely the adolescence. This can be of particular importance not only to the parents themselves, but also to certain institutions and social services that have been established to provide support to these individuals and their families.

The TSL sector facing the challenges of sustainable development - selected aspects

Branża TSL wobec wyzwań zrównoważonego rozwoju – wybrane aspekty

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: sustainable development; green competence; TFL sector; human resources management

The monograph addresses selected social, economic and environmental aspects of the concept of sustainable development in the TFL sector. It is part of the trend of considering how to satisfy the needs of the present generation in such a way as not to limit the possibilities of satisfying those needs by future generations. The publication consists of nine chapters and a supplement. The individual chapters present solutions aimed at sustainable development initiated and put into practice by specific companies related to the TSL industry, as well as public institutions. There are also cross-sectional analyses of the entire TFL sector. The research results presented by the individual authors allow for the conclusion that due to the strategic importance of the TFL sector in the economy, there is an urgent need to involve decision-makers from this sector in initiatives aimed at sustainable development. However, the transformation of TFL sector entities towards sustainability is impossible without the appropriate multidimensional involvement of their employees in this process. Therefore, what follows from the presented considerations, apart from the implementation of internal pro-environmental regulations or technical and technological solutions, it becomes important to pay attention to the appropriate management of human capital in individual organisations from the TFL sector.
