THE INCOME OF NEWS TELEVISIONS- SOURCE OF INNOVATION OF THE BUSINESS PARADIGM

THE INCOME OF NEWS TELEVISIONS- SOURCE OF INNOVATION OF THE BUSINESS PARADIGM

Author(s): Arina-Ioana Moga / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 16/2019

The technological revolution, which changed the relationship between supply and demand, forced entrepreneurs and managers to rethink business models. To provide a customer / consumer benefit, but also to capture value from it, the business plan aimed at changing and / or adapting the architecture of revenue, costs and associated profits. Media market researchers have found that the traditional business model of television (selling TV advertising) is outdated and recommended the approach to innovation. Picard (2011, p. 8) emphasized that strengthening the existing sources of income or discovery of new ones, would help media institutions respond to market changes. In Romania, on a market in which there are about 700 televisions, the ones from the news niche compete not only with each other, but try to get the largest share of the revenues earned from television advertising. The competitive dynamics that altered both the demand offer ratio and the consumption patterns of media products, led the Romanian news televisions to find new sources of income in order to be able to operate. Shaping a business model in context with the market is necessary for these media organizations in order to become competitive. This article pursues only the financial component of the business model in an attempt to identify whether there are other sources of income for news televisions than the traditional news. The data presented in this material are part of the doctoral research "Publishing and Marketing Strategies of Romanian Television News" conducted by the author in his capacity as PhD student at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences, University of Bucharest.

Author(s): Emanuel Plopeanu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The aim of this paper is to highlight the way in which the United States press looked upon political evolution in the Balkans, between the two World Wars. We try to identify the main concepts through which the U.S. press defined the Balkan statehood and the relations between governments and peoples. Coming from a long distanced society, but one in which respecting rules was at high level for centuries, it is important to see the image cultivated into the American society, by the American press. In many cases, the definitions of this area are not quite satisfactory, the U.S. press frequently mentioning the governmental corruption, the lack of care about people needs, the absolute need for power, the malfunction of the state powers – definitions, which, in our days, are gathered into a single concept: “failed states”.

Nowy ład europejskiej komunikacji – ideologia czy technokratyczna konieczność? Europejska Unia Pocztowo-

Nowy ład europejskiej komunikacji – ideologia czy technokratyczna konieczność? Europejska Unia Pocztowo- -Telekomunikacyjna (1942–1945)

Author(s): Sabrina Proschmann,Valentine Aldebert / Language(s): Polish Issue: 5/2021

Każdy nowy reżim bazuje na tworzeniu sieci wiążących społeczeństwo w jedną całość – wśród nich można wymienić sieć komunikacyjną. W latach trzydziestych XX wieku dwiema najważniejszymi sieciami komunikacyjnymi były poczta i telekomunikacja (PiT).

It is indisputable that attempts at endangering the Yugoslav self-government socialist social system in internal affairs originate from forces troubled by the favourable development of its society. So far, their attempts have been manifested in versatile activities directed against its self-government socialist system. Availing themselves of the momentary crisis in the economic, political, international, cultural and religious relations in Yugoslavia, they have made marked efforts at provoking unstableness of its social and political system. By voicing their opinions through various media, these forces have been trying to present themselves to the international public opinion as the political opposition in this country. The activities of these forces are manifested in the attempts to endanger the Yugoslav society by various psychological propaganda, like the spreading of misinformation, lies and half-lies. These anti-socialist and anti-self-government forces, through the above mentioned activities, and aided by similar forces from abroad, have been trying to influence the viewpoints and behavior of the people, and present certain legitimate and necessary acts of defence of the fundamental values of Yugoslav society as undemocratic and repressive, in severe opposition to to the elementary principles of the Helsinki Agreement of 1975. However, owing to the conception of nation-wide military defence and other social defensive activities, which is constantly being developed and expanded by new elements, especially at this moment of aggravation of international affairs, editors and editor’s councils in the mass-media in Yugoslavia are under the special duty of resolutely preventing any attempt of infiltration of these destructive forces into the mass-media.

Problematika utjelovljenja u online gleda(c)torstvu

Problematika utjelovljenja u online gleda(c)torstvu

Author(s): Mihai Băcăran / Language(s): English Issue: 22/2023

Digital media, and especially the widespread use of the internet, challenge our experience of embodied presence and consequently force us to rethink the definition of the ‘human’ body that informs our social practices. Starting from the online documentations of Guy Ben-Ary’s bio-artwork cellF (2015), Alvin Lucier’s seminal experimental music piece Music for Solo Performer (1965), and Stelarc’s performance RE-WIRED / RE-MIXED (2015) the present article participates in this debate by asking: what type of embodied identity is contoured in online specta(c)torship? From a methodological point of view, the article resonates with Mieke Bal’s insistence on the importance of the case study in art theory and in the philosophy of art. It aims at performing a philosophical intervention with respect to the contemporary understanding of embodiment starting from the experience proposed by the encounter with specific artworks. Drawing on the case studies mentioned above and on theories of embodiment formulated in a diversity of contexts — such as affect theory (Seigworth and Greg, Clough), feminist critique (Grosz, Butler), performance studies (Salazar Sutil) and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze —, the article contends that the problematic of the embodied subject, such as it appears in online specta(c)torship, is that of an ongoing misrecognition: an ongoing decentring of the thinking subject (of the cartesian cogito) in a continuous renegotiation of the bio-techno-logical ‘self’ that grounds the ‘I’ and is in turn grounded by it.

Strategijske dileme kulturne politike sustava audiovizualne djelatnosti u Republici Hrvatskoj

Strategijske dileme kulturne politike sustava audiovizualne djelatnosti u Republici Hrvatskoj

Author(s): Edib Ahmetašević / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 22/2023

The cultural policy of the Republic of Croatia in the field of audio-visual activities, as the nation has passed through transition, has left an indelible mark on the overall area of audio-visual activities in a number of ways. Following the fall of Socialism, which implied the systematic transition of the former countries within the Socialist system towards various models of Capitalism, structural transitions also occurred as a result of global changes. With these changes, the national cultural policy pertaining to audio-visual activities was also affected. The disorientation of cultural policy decelerated, or completely halted, the development of audio-visual activities towards the creative industry. The disorientation of cultural policy arose as the result of irresponsible social conduct, the lack of respect for cultural diversity, underdeveloped ties between the public, private and civil sectors, and an absence of strategic cultural policy. In order to develop the creative industry, it is necessary to implement audio-visual activities both efficiently and effectively. To do so, it is necessary to redefine, developcand implement a set of strategies and instruments in the cultural policy of the Republic of Croatia in the field of audio-visual activities. An interdisciplinary approach that ties together the integral theories of social contractsvand dilemmas of contemporary cultural policy in the field of audio-visual activities indicates the importance of social responsibility, particularly for the private sector, which plays an important role in the development of the film industry as a profit-oriented cultural industry. Proposal: the development of the creative industry in the field of audio-visual activities in the Republic of Croatia is not possible without balanced activities of a strategic cultural policy, which will aim to create a balance between the aesthetic and market values of the audio-visual activities.

Author(s): Slobodan Penezić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2021

This article briefly seeks to shed some light on the position of sport in contemporary society, considering it in the context of the relationship between this sphere of society (sport) and the field of Public Relations. With that intention, we investigate key features of modern sports events and the aspects on which they connect with the so-called PR industry, which are, at the same time, based on the origins of that relationship. The analysis of key trends and consequences of the processes that are realized within that relation (sport-PR), indicates the basic mechanisms that drive them, but also thenumerous negativities that occur along the way, due to the reversal of the original logic of both areas. In this regard, the role of professional ethics is considered, as a barrier to these, negatively oriented processes, but also as a basis for returning that logic to the original meaning of sports, PR, and their relationship; and thus, the prevention of social anomalies that arise today from that relationship, which we all witness every day.

Author(s): Ilina Jakimovska / Language(s): Macedonian Issue: 20/2020

LAUGH, NOT WAR: HUMOR, SATIRE AND THE DISSOLUTION OF YUGOSLAVIA

Author(s): Ilina Jakimovska / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2020

The article presents a concise review of political criticism through the medium of humor and satire, at the time of ex-Yugoslavia and during its dissolution. It covers several important magazines and individual authors from ex-Yugoslav republics that, in difficult times for the freedom of speech, have shown dignity and courage to describe, criticize and warn regarding existing nationalisms and the futility of wars. Today their works have not only artistic but also historical and anthropological importance since they speak, more fluently than the official and often censored history, about the time in which they were created, and the circumstances in which the voices of reason were suppressed.

Holocaust Reminiscenses in Digital Media Culture and Cultural Institutions (Development of Critical Thinking and Media Literacy)

Holocaust Reminiscenses in Digital Media Culture and Cultural Institutions (Development of Critical Thinking and Media Literacy)

Author(s): Erika Moravčíková,Viera Jakubovská,Kristína Jakubovská,Ingrida Hudecová / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The authors of the article analyse the problem of individual and collective memory through the prism of The Holocaust reminiscence. They are aware that we are living in a time when living memories of the grave crimes and catastrophes of the 20th century are fading away, as well as the complex political, social and cultural processes, taking place at present, are becoming intensified in the context of the War in Ukraine. These events and processes once again highlight the social importance of individual and collective memory and the need for its conscious formation through media and intercultural education. The aim of the authors’ endeavour is to explore four forms of The Holocaust reminiscence, : 1/ reminiscence in the form of reconstruction (authentic representation of the past); 2/ reminiscence as (re)interpretation (remembrance that refers to the past but is interpreted in the context of current findings); 3/ reminiscence as prevention and civic engagement (education and educational programmes that promote tolerance and moral qualities); 4/ reminiscence as a tool for cultural identity formation (forming collective identities and promoting social inclusion). The study will include interpretations of selected works from the field of performing arts and case studies from media culture. Attention will also be focused on particular proposals for media-educational and cultural-pedagogical activities which can be used in cultural institutions and in media education in order to develop media literacy and critical thinking.

Telewizyjni komentatorzy i eksperci w relacjonowaniu parlamentarnej kampanii wyborczej: przypadek Wiadomości TVP w 2015 i 2019 roku

Author(s): Rafał Klepka / Language(s): English Issue: 04/2022

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the statements of experts and commentators in news items devoted to the parliamentary elections and the election campaign in 2015 and 2019 in one of the most popular news programs, Wiadomościbroadcasted by the public television TVP1. Content analysis was used for the study. The aim of the study was both to determine the specifics of the experts and commentators presented and the overtone of their opinions on the election committees participating in the parliamentary election. The results of the study show that during the 2019 election campaign, the public broadcaster's news program mostly presented a different type of experts and commentators than in 2015, and the commentaries themselves changed their overtone from being more distanced from the entities participating in the 2015 elections to being strongly engaged and exposing a strong position on the assessment of the main rivals of the 2019 parliamentary election.

POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND TRADITIONAL MEDIA – AN INSEPARABLE CONNECTION

Author(s): Neven Obradović / Language(s): English Issue: 01/2023

Mass media have completely changed the way politicians and voters communicate. Communication within political parties, membership activism, party discipline and respect for hierarchy have become less important, because the media play a central role in the dissemination of political information, in political education, and also in the process of persuading the masses to do certain things. According to Zoran Slavujević (2009), contemporary politics is actually an organized media phenomenon that is planned and implemented for and through cooperation with the media. In this paper, the author elaborates on the relationship between political communication and traditional media, showing its historical development, but also contemporary concepts of this inseparable connection. The press, radio and television were created at different periods of time, but each of these media changed the rules of political communication and set new standards. Although many theorists predicted the end of their predecessors with the appearance of each of these media, each of them adapted to new circumstances and survived to this day. Recognizing the power of political communication through mass media, political subjects accepted the concept of politics based on the standards set by the media.
