Toward a Narrative Grammar of Polish

Author(s): Lea Sawicki / Language(s): English

Studium elementów gramatyki narratywnej w popularnonaukowych opowiadaniach Stanisława Lema Opowieści o pilocie Pirxie. Zawiera wnikliwą i nowatorską analizę podstawowych środków gramatycznych języka polskiego używanych w budowie tekstu narracyjnego i określających zjawiska tekstualne związane z odbiorem anatomii opowiadania przez czytelnika.Analiza została przeprowadzona w formie zazębiających się badań nad zasobem wykładników gramatycznej budowy tekstu, przyczyniających się do powstania spójnego, wielowarstwowego i bogatego pod względem artystycznym tekstu narracyjnego, takich jak: czas, aspekt, schematy składniowe, współrzędność i podrzędność składniowa, partykuły i spójniki oraz szyk zdania. Wielopłaszczyznowe ujęcie ukazuje wzajemne oddziaływanie literackich i językowych elementów, tworząc obraz sztuki narracyjnej Stanisława Lema i zarazem obraz struktury językowej polszczyzny.

Białorusko-polska homonimia międzyjęzykowa

Author(s): Radosław Kaleta / Language(s): Polish,Belarusian

In English, there exist several terms describing the interlingustic homonymy – a phenomenon which is described in this dissertation, with reference to the Belarusian and Polish language. Among these terms, one can indicate: (translator’s/slavist’s) “false friends”, “false cognates”, “misleading words” (of foreign origin), “deceptive words”, “deceptive cognates” or “interlinguistic lexical homonymy”.The monograph includes a review of some of the most important European works on the problem of “false friends” understood in a broad sense. These references lead to a discussion on the existing definitions as well as the most appropriate term to determine the concept of “false friends”. Furthermore, an attempt to list types and causes of this phenomenon is made. The phenomenon of “false friends” can be observed not only within vocabulary, but also among more complex lexical structures, e.g. expressions and phrases. As mentioned above, the aim of this book was to list different types of “false friends” and to explain the mechanism of language mistakes and misunderstandings. This issue should be taken into consideration in the process of language teaching. This book offers a theoretical overview of the problem of interlingual homonymy as regards Polish and Belarusian. It also provides a comprehensive list of types of interlinguistic homonymy, which is lead to compile a dictionary of Belarusian‑Polish “false friends”. So far, such a publication has not been worked up. It is also the first greater dictionary of this type, including numerous examples. It is addressed not only to students and teachers, but also to all those who use Belarusian and Polish in their everyday life including journalists, businessmen or politicians.

The Puzzle of (Un)Countability in English. A Study in Cognitive Grammar

Author(s): Grzegorz Drożdż / Language(s): English

„The book is divided into two main parts: theoretical and analytical. In the theoretical part, there are three main chapters. In the first one, we make an overview of the major views on countability and uncountability, indicate their major characteristics, point to the insights that each of them has made, and collect the regularities of count-to-mass and mass-to-count shifts that have been observed within them. The second chapter introduces Cognitive Grammar (CG) and its terminological apparatus. It discusses the major assumptions of CG: its approach to meaning, to the noun, and to countability and uncountability. The first part concludes with a chapter that compares the claims found in other branches of linguistics and those made within CG.The analytical part is divided into four chapters. In the first one, we present the methodology of the analysis. In the second chapter, we present the schemas and patterns of semantic extension that we determined after an analysis of mass extensions of 30 count nouns. In the third chapter, we present the results of an analysis of count extensions of 30 mass nouns. The final chapter sums up the analysis and provides a discussion of the results.” (from Introduction)

Komizm polskich i francuskich zdań cytowanych. Analiza semantyczna, stylistyczna i pragmatyczna

Author(s): Magdalena Lipińska / Language(s): Polish

W monografii zanalizowano mechanizmy komizmu słownego w polskich i francuskich przysłowiach, zagadkach i facecjach.

Monografia Antonio Maria López’a Gonzalez’a stanowi z jednej strony podsumowanie dotychczasowych osiągnięć wyjątkowo rozległych studiów, często o charakterze interdyscyplinarnym, dotyczących badania leksyki potencjalnej języka hiszpańskiego jako języka rodzimego, a z drugiej, ocenę możliwości ich dalszego rozwoju i wykorzystania w celu optymalizacji podejmowanych w świecie hiszpańskim nowych przedsięwzięć leksykograficznych i innych językoznawczych, związanych z naukami pokrewnymi.

La méthode d’enseignement à distance dans le développement de la compétence rédactionnelle en langue étrangère

Author(s): Beata Gałan / Language(s): French

The subject of this work is a reflection on the effectiveness of the distance learning method in the glottodidactic process. The author concentrates upon: an analysis of properties of the remote method basing on various forms of distance learning, an overview of information and communication technologies (ICT) used in education, a reflection on the editing process in a foreign language, and a discussion about didactic and social aspects of an educational virtual space (a virtual classroom). On the grounds of theoretical considerations, empirical studies were conducted; their main purpose was an observation of properties and an evaluation of the efficiency of the distance learning method in developing competencies in foreign language writing. In the studies, the hybrid approach – combining quantitative and qualitative analyses –was utilised. In order to verify the effectiveness of the distance learning method, a didactic experiment was carried out, which made it possible to compare the results achieved in the traditional system and in the virtual space. The quantitative analysis was supplemented with a number of reflections on the specificity of the distance learning method and the virtual classroom.Consisting of the pilot study and the main study, the experiment was conducted within the framework of higher education, in a composition course included in the “Practical knowledge of French” module. One group of students starting to learn French as an at least second foreign language participated in the experiment. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the distance learning method on the development of writing skills in a foreign language. In order to compare the educational effects, a half of the classes in the course were conducted in a classic form, and another half – in the remote learning system by means of the Moodle learning platform. Non-final grades (ones received in the course during the term) became the research material necessary to compare the results, and the obtained data were subject to statistical processing. The pilot study brought comparable results of average grades, but it also provided valuable guidelines concerning the untypical dispersion of the results. In the main study, conducted on 47 people, an ordinary comparison of average grades also suggested a similar efficiency of both methods. However, the study of significance of the differences by means of the t test revealed that the online method proves to be more effectivein a statistically relevant manner, but it brings measurable benefits only to a specific target group, using adequate learning strategies.Additional information was provided by the qualitative analysis. It demonstrated that – despite rather frequent and regular Internet usage, also for educational purposes — students’ attitude to distance learning is relatively varied. Student point to both advantages and opportunities offered by the distance learning method (development of autonomy and learning strategies, access to various didactic materials), and its limitations (lack of direct contact with the teacher, lowered motivation). The interviewees’ responses clearly emphasise not only the differences between the classic method and the distance learning method, but also the specificity of working in a remote system, which requires a huge amount of self-discipline, regularity, and involvement. The key to success in the distance learning process is a set of competencies and skills related to learning strategies (high level of autonomy, self-discipline, autonomy in problem solving, conscious time management, regularity). Such a set is defined in the work as the habitus of the virtual classroom. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the distance learning method is an obvious priority of academic teachers in the light of virtualisation of higher education. The conducted research provided significant information concerning the efficiency and specificity of the distance learning method, which will make it possible to use this method in a more conscious manner in the practice of academic teaching. However, the classic method still remains the privileged one, and the teacher–student relation — a relevant feature of this kind of teaching practice. Nevertheless, the potential of the distance learning method turns out to be significant. The optimal solution is, certainly, the hybrid method, combining direct contact with distance learning elements. To sum up, the main conclusion emerging from the conducted study is that the distance learning method proves to be effective only to a certain target group, members of which use learning strategies that are appropriate to this type of work.

Le denominazioni proprie nelle traduzioni italiane della narrativa contemporanea polacca

Author(s): Joanna Ozimska / Language(s): Italian

Proper names are important in social life due to numerous features and they are an interesting material for literary creation. Nomina propria present on the pages of contemporary Polish novels because of their form and semantics can be a source of information about the value, trends in naming, may also constitute a challenge for literary translators. The aim of this study is to examine translation strategies and techniques applied to different categories of proper names within contemporary Polish fiction translated into Italian and to demonstrate that the names used in literature can be a translation problem worthy of deeper understanding and description due to the complex nature of proper names. The study has been conducted to investigate names of the twenty selected novels published in Italy in the years 2002–2013 by well known publishing houses as well as by smaller ones, specialized in Slavic literature. The analyzed novels were written by Andrzej Stasiuk, Olga Tokarczuk, Jacek Dehnel, Jerzy Pilch, Dorota Masłowska, Paweł Huelle, Katarzyna Grochola, Tomek Tryzna, Małgorzata Musierowicz, Marek Krajewski, Wojciech Kuczok. The analyzed material belongs to the modern canon of Polish prose, which – as research has shown – is among the literature willingly translated into foreign languages, not only European, as evidenced by the data presented in the first chapter of the thesis, provided by the Book Institute located in Cracow, an institution created in 2004 to promote the Polish language and literature in the world.

Author(s): Agnieszka Woch / Language(s): French

The current book is an in-depth analysis of the discourse used in campaigns of public service advertising aiming at fighting racist, homophobic and serophobic discrimination. The author examines the persuasive strategies employed in this type of mass communication by analysing a corpus of French and Polish campaigns launched by governments and non-governmental organisations between 1997 and 2017. The study belongs to field of linguistics and focuses mainly on the persuasive strategies as used in rhetoric and propaganda. Nonetheless, the author also considers contributions from other areas of research such as marketing communication and behavioral psychology. Through a contrastive analysis of the persuasive and discoursive strategies employed in the public awareness campaigns, the author seeks to determine how marketing specialists adapt to their intended audience and achieve the perlocutionary goals of the campaigns in the two different socio-cultural contexts. The analysis of the corpus not only highlights the importance of identifying the right arguments to appeal to in a given context, but also allows to understand which persuasive strategies, according to marketing specialists, qualify as universal and appropriate in the fight against racist, homophobic and serophobic discrimination.

Verbs in Fictive Motion

Author(s): Jacek Tadeusz Waliński / Language(s): English

This book presents a corpus-based study of verbs used in expressions of fictive motion, which refers to the cognitive-linguistic phenomenon of describing material objects incapable of movement in terms of motion over their configuration in space. The study focuses specifically on the category of coextension paths, which are used to describe the form, orientation, or location of a spatially extended object in terms of a path over the object’s extent. The analysis, carried out using the British National Corpus, indicates that in English only a fraction of motion verbs are used consistently to express coextension paths, and that some of them are used for this purpose far more systematically than others. A holographic image of structuring coextension paths that emerges from the linguistic data indicates that whereas directional motion verbs tend to be used in fictive motion to express bounded paths, directions, and routes, verbs of motion manner are employed to specify shapes constituting subjective counterparts of spatial contours of actual motion. Moreover, depending on the particular use and the wider linguistic context, certain coextension path expressions can be interpreted as a result of conceptual blending, which fuses multiple facets of motion via a common communicative platform established dynamically in discourse. From the perspective of the analysis, these interpretations are not mutually irreconcilable. The evocation of a particular conceptualization triggered by the semantic attributes conflated in a verb and its satellites is likely to depend not only on individual comprehension strategies, but also on the degree of cultural-linguistic conventionalization of certain fictive motion patterns established through the processes of language acquisition and social transfer.

Językowe portrety zwierząt hodowlanych w przestrzeni semantyczno-kulturowej polszczyzny i ruszczyzny

Author(s): Agata Piasecka / Language(s): Polish

The monograph aims to describe the stabilized, reproducible phraseological units, which are within boundaries of widely understood phraseology. They are supplemented by examples from lexis level, the analysis itself is set in the cultural context. Based on the Polish and Russian languages data, which exceeds two and a half thousand exemplifications, the Author, with the help of cognitive definition method, recreates phraseological portraits of the five most popular species of farm animals: a horse, cow, pig, sheep and goat. On their basis an important part of linguistic world picture is shown, revealing above all the system of appraisal, values, experiences and attitudes of Russians and Poles. The analysed units on one hand reflect the ways of perceiving certain species of our minor brothers by homo sapiens on the other hand mark the place and manner of existence of humans themselves in the area of language. The Author’s objective is to present linguistic portraits of farm animals with the wealth of associations, symbols, metaphors connected with them, at the same time contrasting data derived from the Polish and Russian languages. This monograph is to mirror human vision of the world. It makes a man the agent acting and simultaneously building the texture of language. «Tracking human traces» in the layer of the stabilized phraseological units becomes the theme of the Author’s exploration.

El gallego y el castellano en contacto: code-switching, convergencias y otros fenómenos de contacto entre lenguas

Author(s): Marta Pawlikowska / Language(s): Spanish

The aim of this book is to study functions and motivations for code-switching between Galician and Castilian as we intend to explain why the speakers use the code-switching and other phenomena like transference or convergence and try to discover motivations hidden behind the usage. In order to analyse the language contact phenomena between Galician and Castilian, a linguistic corpus based on radio and television programs from Radio y Televisión Gallegas was made. These programmes include examples of free speech of language users which were required to find spontaneous samples of code-switching in order to observe languages in contact phenomena occurring naturally. The three chapters of this thesis give an approach to the current sociolinguistic situation of the Galician language, sketch the issues related to the different languages in contact with these phenomena and finally, the analysis of the examples extracted from the corpus. The first chapter focuses on the Galician language, its sociolinguistic and demographic situation, the usage of the language and the attitude of the speaker towards it. It also comments on issues related to the normalization and the normativization of Galician as well as explains the questions about spoken Galician. The second chapter focuses on the different language contact phenomena and the relation between them. The terminology and boundaries between transference, borrowing, convergence, code-mixing and code-switching can be very blurry, especially studied in the numerous researches about the given topic. Since that code-switching is the most complex of them all, the chapter is mainly about its different theories, terminology, formal aspects and research that has been conducted in other language pairs. The third and the last chapter of the thesis in the first part presents aspects of the corpus linguistics as well as formal and practical issues on creating a corpus dedicated to this research. The second part focuses on the analysis of the samples extracted from the corpus. The examples are grouped together using one of the typologies presented in the second chapter and the patterns about the code-switching usage between Galician and Castilian are sought. Moreover, the samples of other language contact phenomena are described and explained, as they appeared during the analysis of the corpus. The book is completed with its final consideration that resumes the research and highlights the day by day normality of usage of different language in contact phenomena in speech of the Galician people.

Słownik Bartłomieja z Bydgoszczy. Wersja polsko-łacińska

Author(s): Lucyna Agnieszka Jankowiak,Elżbieta Kędelska,Arleta Łuczak / Language(s): Polish,Latin

Bartholomew of Bydgoszcz was among the most outstanding early 16th century Bydgoszcz Friars Minor of the Observance. He authored six manuscripts, totalling over 2,600 pages. His Latin-Polish dictionaries of 1532 and 1544 contain Polish material which is so rich that the works are considered the most extensive collections of Polish vocabulary from the first half of the 16th century. The 1532 manuscript (entitled Vocabularius ex Calepino, Breviloquo et Mamotrecto recollectus) counts 257 leaves and contains 4,276 Polish words as equivalents to 4,488 Latin entries. Bartholomew’s second lexicon took on the form of notes on the margins of the famous 600-page-long 15th century Latin dictionary of Johann Reuchlin (Vocabularius breviloquus, Argentine 1488). In this second work, Batholomew lists Polish equivalents for over 11,000 Latin entries. Altogether, this listing covers around 7,000 new words that were absent from the 1532 dictionary. Bartholomew’s lexicons include Polish words from various spheres of life. Apart from basic vocabulary, they feature abundant specialist lexis, represented by philosophical, theological, naturalist and medical, legal, maritime, grammar and biblical terminology. Both dictionaries bring together not only rich Polish and Latin language material but also numerous idiosyncratic entries, not attested in such voluminous works as Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku [Dictionary of 16th century Polish language] or Słownik łaciny średniowiecznej w Polsce [Dictionary of medieval Latin in Poland]. The dictionaries by Bartholomew of Bydgoszcz were not intended for print. They served as, among other things, textbooks in the school of philosophy at his monastery in Bydgoszcz and an encyclopaedia of his contemporary world, summarising information from various fields of science and of practice, like preparation of medicines. This complete “reversed” Polish-Latin version of Bartholomew's dictionary, published by the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, in 1999-2019 features more than 10,600 Polish words (entries)

Gwary Mazur wschodnich w XIX wieku (na podstawie ankiet Georga Wenkera do Niemieckiego atlasu językowego)

Author(s): Dorota Krystyna Rembiszewska / Language(s): Polish,German

This book is devoted to the discussion of questionnaires for the German Linguistic Atlas (Deutscher Sprachatlas), designed by Georg Wenker (1852–1911), a librarian working in Marburg. The present study offers a linguistic analysis of replies to Wenker’s questionnaire collected in eighty locations in eastern Mazuria – the Ełk, Gołdap and Olecko districts. Although the questionnaire had been designed to explore German dialects, it was possible to identify Polish dialectal features and to conduct a partial reconstruction of the state of Mazurian dialects of Polish in the easternmost part of the historical province of East Prussia in the nineteenth century. Wenker’s survey material is a unique set of data from the period which provides a broad perspective on local dialects of eastern Mazuria, a peripheral area which had a limited contact with the general Polish language for a long time, did not have much connection with Polish cultural and political life, and was characterised by the penetration of the German language.

This study analyses etymological and word-formation methods employed to create the non-standard vocabulary of Stanislaw Lem’s Cyberiada (The Cyberiad) and Powtórka [Repetition], with a particular focus on neologisms. The analysis also considers equivalents of this vocabulary used by the Bulgarian translators of these works, and translation solutions they decided to apply. As established, differences between their translation strategies led to significant losses in the Bulgarian translation of Powtórka in comparison with the source text.
