EMIL CIORAN: THE POWER OF THE WORD – PHILOSOPHY AS A TOOL FOR TRANSFORMATION

EMIL CIORAN: THE POWER OF THE WORD – PHILOSOPHY AS A TOOL FOR TRANSFORMATION

Author(s): Alexandra Nadoș / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The study focuses on several psychological aspects, particularly those related to the life of the writer and philosopher Emil Cioran. An intensely paradoxical figure, Cioran takes us on a journey of personal growth, akin to a kind of Sturm und Drang of his visions. Born in a small, forgotten corner of Romania, which he referred to as "Paradise," he would later, in his adult life, come to embrace another country: France, which would become his home until his death. The article will explore his exile, his youth in particular, as well as his desire for redemption in his later years. Cioran is a free and provocative writer, employing a form of irony that can be challenging for inexperienced readers to fully grasp.

ECOCRITICAL TROPES IN HERMAN MELVILLE’S MOBY DICK OR THE WHALE

ECOCRITICAL TROPES IN HERMAN MELVILLE’S MOBY DICK OR THE WHALE

Author(s): Andrei Dimitrie Borcan / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick or The Whale” has been analysed by us through the ecocritical lens of a number of Greg Garrard’s tropes of „Ecocriticism” (2004, 2023) (“Apocalypse,” “Wilderness,”“Animals,” “the Earth,” “Indigeneity”), together with other ecocritical concepts: “cornucopia, “ecophilia,” “ecocentrism”, “anthropocentrism,” “anthropomorphism”, “zoomorphism,” “speciesism,” “racism,” “reversed racism,”, “ethnocentrism,” Simon Estok’s “ecophobia”, Stacy Alaimo’s “transcorporeality,” Serenella Iovino’s “porosity”, Timothy Morton’s “hyperobjects”, Gregory Bateson’s “homeostasis”, “double bind” and “schismogenesis,” as well as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s “rhizomes” and Michel Foucault’s “heterotopia.” The plot of this vast novel, as well as the characters’ analysis has been found to contain ecocritical concepts. The same can be stated about the numerous quotations contained in this study. All the themes of the novel can be read ecocritically, e.g. “the limits of knowledge”; “the deceptiveness of fate”; “the exploitation”. All the motifs of the novel, including “whiteness”; “surfaces and depths,” are interpretable through the ecocritical lens. All the symbols in the novel can be interpreted ecocritically, e.g. “the Pequod “; “Moby Dick”; “Queequeg’s coffin”; “foreshadowing”. Thus, Melville appears to have been a possible fore-runner of the ecocritical writers in his outlook of natural, social, political issues.

BLAISE CENDRARS OR LITERARY REPORTING FROM AN AESTHETIC ANGLE

BLAISE CENDRARS OR LITERARY REPORTING FROM AN AESTHETIC ANGLE

Author(s): Anuța Batin / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

In this work I have tried to highlight the contribution of Blaise Cendrars to the development of French literary reporting. The innovation consists in writing poem-report, but also in a novel-report called "The Gold". The style is that specific to literature, but I also respect some rules related to journalism. We mention that also during this period, journalism experienced a revolution in reporting, through the introduction of photography: writing being doubled by photographic originality. He adopts a sober style, with short phrases but loaded with deep lyricism.

THE REPEATED LATIN DISCOURSE IN ROMANIAN CULTURE AND THE WORKS OF CONSTANTIN CIOPRAGA: FUNCTIONS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND RELEVANCE

THE REPEATED LATIN DISCOURSE IN ROMANIAN CULTURE AND THE WORKS OF CONSTANTIN CIOPRAGA: FUNCTIONS, CHARACTERISTICS, AND RELEVANCE

Author(s): Bogdan-Adrian Judeţ / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

This paper explores the concept of "repeated Latin discourse," a phenomenon essential to the evolution of language, particularly in Romanian, where Latin has significantly influenced its structure and stylistics. The first chapter defines repeated discourse as the recurrence of linguistic structures (expressions, phrases, or fixed formulas) in different contexts, maintaining a stable semantic core while allowing reinterpretations and adaptations. It emphasizes the importance of repeated Latin discourse in Romanian, both at the lexical and syntactical level. The chapter discusses the key characteristics of this discourse, including its persistence, formal stability, semantic adaptability, and stylistic and argumentative functions. The usage of Latin expressions spans various domains such as law, academia, and literature, contributing to the cultural and linguistic heritage of Romania. Cristinel Munteanu’s contributions are highlighted, particularly his analysis of Latin phrases’ adaptation and their impact on Romanian syntax and style. The second chapter focuses on the role of repeated Latin discourse in Constantin Ciopraga’s work, illustrating how he uses Latin expressions to establish authority, enhance memorability, and foster intertextual connections. His use of Latin phrases reflects a deep-rooted intellectual tradition and strengthens his arguments by providing clarity and legitimacy. Expressions like "Auctoritatis argumentum" and "Non scholae, sed vitae discimus" serve to underscore the educational and cultural importance of literature. The repeated use of Latin phrases also aids in connecting different literary works across time, demonstrating the enduring relevance of classical thought. Cristinel Munteanu's studies on repeated discourse are referenced, highlighting its importance in forming logical structures and maintaining an academic and scholarly style.

RECLAIMING BLACK AUTHORITY: FROM THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE TO THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

RECLAIMING BLACK AUTHORITY: FROM THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE TO THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

Author(s): Ștefania Elena Degeratu / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The Harlem Renaissance, an artistic and intellectual movement highlighting the achievements and creativity of African Americans in the 1920s and 1930s, experienced a gradual decline influenced by multiple factors. While no singular event triggered its demise, scholars have identified two primary factors contributing to its rapid decline. The initial factor was a financial crisis, as the Great Depression of the 1930s significantly impacted Harlem’s arts and cultural environment. The second issue involved the migration of numerous African Americans from the region, driven by their desire for improved opportunities and recognition beyond their immediate community. As these factors converged, the influence of the Harlem Renaissance waned and eventually dissipated, leaving a lasting legacy of artistic and cultural achievements that continue to inspire and shape subsequent generations of artists and intellectuals. Therefore, this paper will explore the evolution of Black cultural expression, activism, and resistance to systemic racism in the United States, tracing a remarkable journey from the Harlem Renaissance to the contemporary Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. While these two transformative periods arise from different historical contexts and employ varied advocacy methods, they are intricately connected by a shared purpose: the powerful assertion of Black identity and dignity. Both movements illuminate the ongoing struggle for equality, showcasing the resilience of the Black community in confronting and challenging the profoundly entrenched inequalities that persist throughout American society.

TYPES OF MIGRATION

TYPES OF MIGRATION

Author(s): Zinica Maria Bejan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Migration is an inevitable global phenomenon that reflects people's needs and aspirations for a better life. Proper migration management can turn this process into a factor of progress and development for all parties involved. Brain-drain migration is one of the existing migration types, and as a result, the concept of brain-waste is also divided. In addition, migration may be temporary or definitive, voluntary or involuntary. Despite not being legally regulated, migration caused by environmental conditions has become an increasingly prevalent topic in specialized works. It is essential that states and communities work together to find solutions that respect the rights and dignity of migrants while contributing to the well-being of their host societies. Regardless of the type of migration, this phenomenon remains a global challenge with a profound impact on society and the economy. While the destination countries take advantage of the talent and knowledge of specialists, the origin countries lose essential resources. An integrated strategy, including internal policies and international cooperation, is necessary to balance the effects of this phenomenon.

CREATIVITY AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

CREATIVITY AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Author(s): Emilia Lapoșina / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Creativity and emotional intelligence are two distinct aspects of psychological functioning, but they can be interconnected and influence each other. Creativity can be seen as a component of emotional intelligence and emotional intelligence can help to foster creativity. Creativity can be seen as the ability to generate new, innovative ideas and find original solutions to problems. This skill requires mental flexibility, divergent thinking and the ability to look at things from different perspectives. Emotional intelligence, on the other hand, refers to the ability to recognise, understand and manage emotions, as well as to identify and respond appropriately to others' emotions.

The paper deals with the concepts of public and private life. Within the private life, family as a unit is to be tackled and within public life, I shall discuss about education and the impact it has on people's lives. According to the traditional pattern, the public realm is exclusively associated with men and the private one with women. Nowadays, significant progress has been made so that women can act their part in the public area and men, in their turn, in the private one. So, we can almost speak of an equilibrium.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN PRIMARY EDUCATION: APPROACHES, CHALLENGES, AND BENEFITS

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN PRIMARY EDUCATION: APPROACHES, CHALLENGES, AND BENEFITS

Author(s): Ancuta Ionescu / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate in multiple languages has become not only an asset but a necessity. Early foreign language education, particularly in primary schools, plays a pivotal role in equipping students with the linguistic and cultural skills they need to thrive in a globalized society. Research indicates that young learners possess a remarkable capacity for language acquisition, often surpassing adults in their ability to achieve native-like proficiency and pronunciation when exposed to a new language early on (Bialystok, 2001). The introduction of foreign languages at the primary level offers far-reaching benefits, including enhanced cognitive development, greater cultural awareness, and improved academic performance across subjects. Despite these advantages, implementing effective foreign language programs in primary schools comes with its own set of challenges. These include ensuring that teachers are adequately trained, developing engaging and age-appropriate curricula, and addressing potential resource limitations. This article explores the multifaceted aspects of foreign language teaching in primary education. It examines the cognitive and social benefits of early language learning, evaluates various pedagogical approaches, and discusses the challenges educators face in delivering effective language instruction. By understanding the impact and intricacies of foreign language instruction in primary education, stakeholders- including educators, parents, and policymakers- can make informed decisions that foster language proficiency and cultural competence among young learners.

AI AND EDUCATION. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE CONTROVERSIAL

AI AND EDUCATION. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE CONTROVERSIAL

Author(s): Alexandra Maria Rogoz / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The emergence of AI into the mainstream media at the end of 2022 is not by far the first instance of AI for free use and interaction with the general population. However, it is the first time marking the emergence of an AI that can follow prompts and construct texts that mimic the writing of humans, emulating a journalistic style in writing texts that can, with ease, be attributed to a person. The refinement of the query the person inputs into the chat bar is not only taken into account (to varying degrees of success), but the AI remembers the previous prompt, and can perfect it if the person interacting with it so requires and requests. The result in the educational field is, of course, that numerous students resort to the Chat-GPT AI for the elaboration of their essays, as well as for the purpose of cheating during tests. However, certain impediments arise in the usage of such methods. Namely, Chat-GPT does answer the query of the person soliciting information, however, it is not always correct, though it is delivered with the pretense of correctness. Moreover, there have been several tools developed with the purpose of identifying the origin of presumably human-written texts, such as Turnitin’s AI-detection tool. The present paper aims to discuss the issues arising from this Generative Artificial Information with respect to academia and academic integrity, with a focus on student assessments and how they need to be modified in order to account for the existence of such tools that facilitate plagiarism.

Author(s): Mariana Baţog / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Emotional development is an important psychological aspect for creating and maintaining well-being in a modern school. Emotional development is a structural component of student well-being. In this article, we presented the results of an experimental study of the opinions of school leaders, teachers, and school psychologists about the importance of emotional development and well-being in an educational environment. Thus, 175 participants of the educational process were interviewed. Heads of the education system, teachers and school psychologists have identified the impact of the emotional development of participants in the educational process on well-being at school, and identified the main emotional problems of students of different age categories. At the same time, school leaders, teachers and school psychologists noted preferences in vocational training in certain psychological disciplines, which significantly contribute to the creation of well-being in educational institutions. Well-being is a condition and resource of a developing, friendly and inclusive school environment and a completion and product of quality psychological assistance in school

PERSPECTIVES ON THE GENDER DIMENSION IN EDUCATION

PERSPECTIVES ON THE GENDER DIMENSION IN EDUCATION

Author(s): Nicoleta-Cristina Sâmcea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

The research interest in gender issues in education is driven by the increasing emphasis on equal opportunities in European education policies, the growing academic and public interest in gender studies in Romania, and the concern of educators about the integration of gender education in schools. Gender considerations have played a significant role in education from early family-based instruction to modern schooling. Historically, education oscillated between gender-segregated and coeducational models, with gender differences evident in access, curricula, school organization, and teaching staff composition. In Romania, references to gender-specific education date back to the 14th century. The first documented girls' school was established in 1544 in Transylvania, followed by legal frameworks in the 17th century that acknowledged girls' education. During the 18th and 19th centuries, state policies increasingly recognized the need for female education, though disparities persisted. By the late 19th century, legislation mandated equal access to elementary education but maintained gendered curricula and career paths. The 20th century saw further progress toward educational equality, culminating in policies that aimed to eliminate gender distinctions in schooling. Post-1944 educational policies emphasized universal access to education, largely ignoring gender differences. While Romania's education system today promotes equity, explicit references to gender equality remain limited in official policies, despite the legal framework established by Law 202/2002 on equal opportunities. Two major theoretical perspectives on gender in education exist: the biological approach, which considers gender roles as naturally determined, and the cultural approach, which views gender as a socially constructed identity shaped by education, socialization, and cultural influences. In Romania, gender studies gained prominence after 1990, with academic feminism driving awareness. Key milestones include the emergence of feminist journals and gender-focused academic programs. Several studies and projects have investigated gender in education, examining stereotypes in preschool education, primary school textbooks, and school curricula. Findings highlight persistent gender biases, traditional role models, and a lack of systematic integration of gender issues in educational content. The study aimed to assess how gender biases are embedded in educational content, teaching methods, and school interactions. It employed a mixed-method approach, including content analysis of textbooks, student surveys, and policy document reviews. Textbook analysis• images: A disproportionate representation of male figures (60%) was observed in school textbooks. Males were depicted in active roles, while females appeared in passive, supportive, or domestic roles.• text content: Male characters were associated with leadership, bravery, and intellectual pursuits, whereas females were linked to emotional sensitivity, caregiving, and household responsibilities. Gender roles were rigidly divided between public (men) and private (women) spheres. Survey results A survey of 67 students in Dolj County (59% female, 41% male) revealed:• Gender stereotypes influence student perceptions of abilities and career choices.• Teachers tend to unconsciously reinforce gender roles in classroom interactions.• Vocational guidance reflects traditional gender expectations, with boys encouraged toward technical fields and girls toward caregiving or artistic professions. Despite legal frameworks supporting gender equality, Romanian education still reflects traditional gender norms. Textbooks and curricula subtly reinforce stereotypes, limiting students' perspectives on gender roles. Gender-neutral policies result in an implicit gender bias rather than an active promotion of gender equality. To achieve true gender equity in education, policies must explicitly address gender issues, revise curricula to incorporate gender-sensitive content, and train educators to recognize and counteract gender biases in their teaching practices.

EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT MANIFESTATIONS OF GENDER IN SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS: MALE AND FEMALE CHARACTERS

EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT MANIFESTATIONS OF GENDER IN SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS: MALE AND FEMALE CHARACTERS

Author(s): Nicoleta-Cristina Sâmcea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

School is not only a means of transforming lives but also a mechanism for organizing them. It plays a key role in shaping social structures, including gender relations. Schools prepare students for the gendered division of labor, both at home and in the workplace, actively producing and reinforcing gender norms rather than merely reflecting existing social ideologies. According to Barrie Thorne, gender identities, masculinity, and femininity are socially constructed through various influences, including family, peers, media, and educational content. One crucial instrument in this process is the textbook, which communicates ideas about gender norms and roles selected from cultural and historical sources. Given its significant impact on shaping students’ perceptions, it is essential to analyze and evaluate textbooks for gender representation. Textbooks create a symbolic world where children spend hours daily, forming ideas about what is normal, acceptable, and appropriate. They serve as "training grounds" for real-life social roles. This study examines how gender is constructed in high school Romanian language and literature textbooks, comparing materials from before and after 2000. The research aims to determine whether these textbooks reinforce gender stereotypes explicitly or implicitly, despite existing non-discriminatory legislation. Main research question: Do Romanian language and literature textbooks reinforce gender stereotypes? Specific research problem: Do textbooks influence students’ behavior and perceptions of gender roles through the experiences they provide in formal education? Hypothesis: Despite non-discriminatory legislation in Romania, gender stereotypes persist in textbooks, both explicitly and implicitly. Methodology: The study analyzes four high school textbooks: two from the 1980s-1990s and two from the 2000s. The analysis focuses on gender representation in illustrations and text, identifying differences and similarities in how gender roles are portrayed over time. The research investigates the following:• The presence of male and female characters in illustrations• Gender-coded traits and behaviors• Gender-based interaction patterns• Representation of power and authority• Gender stereotypes in visual and textual content A total of 572 illustrations were examined, documenting gender representation through empirical indicators such as visibility, authority, stereotype reinforcement, and interaction patterns. Findings1. Gender representation in illustrations• Male characters dominate the visual content: 62% of illustrated characters are male, while 38% are female.• The most significant disparity appears in Manual 3, where 82% of illustrations feature males and only 18% feature females.• No textbook contains more female than male characters.2. Gender interaction and segregation• 78% of mixed-gender illustrations show interaction between male and female characters, suggesting no strong gender segregation.784• Male characters interact more frequently than female characters, reinforcing an active male/passive female dynamic.3. Representation of power and authority• Male characters appear more often in leadership roles, making decisions or guiding others.• Female characters are more frequently depicted as obedient or in subordinate roles (28 cases vs. 15 for males).• Men are portrayed as stronger and more independent, while women are associated with care and emotional support.4. Gender stereotypes and non-stereotypical representations• Traditional gender stereotypes dominate: men engage in public and professional activities, while women are shown in domestic roles.• Few counter-stereotypical representations exist, such as men engaging in household tasks or women participating in technical fields.5. Clothing and technological representation• Female characters predominantly wear dresses and skirts (74%), reinforcing traditional femininity.• Textbooks fail to reflect modern technological realities, with minimal references to contemporary devices like computers or mobile phones, even in post-2000 editions.6. Spatial representation (public vs. private space)• Men appear more frequently in public settings (30% of illustrations), reinforcing the idea of male dominance in professional and societal roles.• Women are more evenly distributed between public (36%) and private (26%) spaces, although some textbooks still emphasize traditional female domesticity. The study highlights several key patterns in gender representation in Romanian language and literature textbooks:• Male characters are overrepresented both numerically and in leadership roles.• Gender interaction is common, reducing segregation but maintaining male dominance in activity and authority.• Stereotypes persist, with women often confined to traditional domestic roles.• Textbooks shape gender identity by reinforcing societal norms through visual and textual content. Despite some progress, Romanian textbooks remain gendered instruments, subtly influencing students’ perceptions of masculinity and femininity. To foster a more equitable educational environment, future textbook revisions should actively address gender bias and promote diverse role models.

THE LINK BETWEEN IE AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS IN PRESCHOOLERS

THE LINK BETWEEN IE AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS IN PRESCHOOLERS

Author(s): Miluța Ursu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Preschool children show sympathy, a certain degree of self-control, and occasionally a sense of fairness in sharing objects, [2,p.83]. Conscientiousness requires maturity and this moral feeling develops in school age and adolescence. There will emerge that personal integrity which we call character. The school's role is to cultivate emotional intelligence through therapy. Freeing the emotions, "will not be an easy task politically... given the turmoil they will create. But we must accept this or continue to raise generations of adults who ignore emotions and thus behave in destructive ways" [2, p. 105]. Preschoolers with language impairments have less access to social interaction, which in turn limits their opportunities to learn about their emotions and the emotions of others. Language barriers are disruptive factors in the expression of emotions and the consequences are seen in the behaviour and attitudes of young children.

COUNSELING FROM AN EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY PERSPECTIVE

COUNSELING FROM AN EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY PERSPECTIVE

Author(s): Maria Pleşca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

In this paper, we propose one of the possible options for building the conceptual foundations of existential counseling. The first question that arises along this path is whether existential counseling and psychotherapy can be considered as a special type of counseling alongside psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.? Or can any counseling become existential counseling if the client proposes an appropriate content for discussion - issues related to life and death, loneliness, love, guilt, etc.? Or is any kind of counseling existential in its inner essence, because, in principle, it can always be raised to existential phenomena that have as their background the field of the client's awareness of his or her problems? The issue can be addressed even more broadly: can psychological counseling as such not be existential at all, because it is, to some extent, an intervention by the psychologist in someone else's life and is capable of changing the trajectory of the client's life path, even if the counselor has not specifically motivated the client to do so? Determining the counselor's position on this issue is important not only theoretically but also practically, because understanding the client's request as existential changes the focus, level, and scope of his or her discussion, in particular, it shifts the emphasis from overcoming the current disadvantage to seeking essential changes in one's life. The specificity of existential counseling is to help the individual to see behind the daily struggles, conflicts, doubts, etc. the source of the disadvantage experienced, the reason that makes it difficult to get in touch with one's own life as a whole, i.e. to discover those limiting attitudes that prevent the individual from building his being in the desired way, which prevents the realization of "self-care" as the ability to build oneself and one's own life according to one's project.

CONCEPTUAL-THEORETICAL INTERDISCIPLINARY IDENTITIES AIMED AT ECOPSYCHOLOGY

Author(s): Maria Dorina Paşca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Knowing that interdisciplinarity is essentially a way to bring together flexible and interconnected strategies and logistics, which, in turn, capture the essence of the component part, at a given moment re-integrating the whole. In this context, responding to certain needs and keeping their competence and the imprint that defines them, psychology: environmental, ecological and ecopsychology, are found in terms of the relationship of man with the environment in which he lives, this being both physical and social. We thus try to answer the rhetorical question "I rule the world or the world rules me".

CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

Author(s): Cristina Rusu-Marian / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The study of conceptual metaphor has become increasingly significant within the field of psychology, highlighting that metaphors serve not merely as literary devices but as essential tools that shape cognition and communication. This article examines the nature and impact of conceptual metaphors in psychology, delineating core objectives such as defining relevant concepts, analyzing their influence on human perception and behavior, and guiding readers through a systematic exploration of the topic. Central to this exploration is the work of Lakoff and Johnson, who propose that metaphors profoundly influence not only the expression of thoughts but also the very foundation of human understanding. The paper comprises a theoretical framework alongside relevant theories, detailed examples, and case studies that underscore the role of metaphors in therapeutic contexts. It also discusses practical implications in psychological therapy and education, emphasizing their potential to enhance communication between therapists and clients by facilitating a deeper grasp of emotional states and life experiences. The conclusions propose future research directions regarding the role of metaphors in human life, encapsulating the article's insights into the complexity and vital essence of metaphorical processes in psychological frameworks.

FATES. TRADITIONS INHERITED FROM ANTIQUITY

FATES. TRADITIONS INHERITED FROM ANTIQUITY

Author(s): Liviu Olteanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Through the Fates Myth we understand a series of ancient customs that we encounter during the Birth cycle, accompanied by the beliefs and specifics of each people. If we refer to Fates from a historical point of view, we notice the fact that ancient man placed a high value on his destiny and fate. The three Greco-Roman goddesses decided the course of a man’s life, in general, benevolent, although they could also have an evil character, depending on the actions and deeds of the intended. Compared to other people, in Romanian mythology, the Fates do not have specific names. It is known that there are three of them and they are represented like young girls, more precisely like fairies who come to the window at night, on the third day, after the birth of the child. In the mythology of the Indo-Europeans, the belief in Fates refers specifically to the three defining moments of life, Birth, Marriage and Death. Capricious or not, good or evil are divided arbitrarily, and the balance somehow remains balanced within this ritual. What is destined cannot be changed, but fate can somehow be improved through various less Christian practices.
