Oralność w Ewangelii św. Jana — zarys problematyki oraz wybrane aspekty

Oralność w Ewangelii św. Jana — zarys problematyki oraz wybrane aspekty

Author(s): Maciej Dąbrowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2015

The Gospel of John is chronologically the last canonical book of the Bible and the years 98-100 AD are currently considered to be the time of its final editing in a written form. Many speeches and dialogues – although presented within the context of deep theological thought – do not lose their original oral character. This paper consists of an outline of this orality on various levels: from the general point of view, its appearance in the Bible, in the New Testament and in the Gospel of John, to the final detailed description of the selected examples. An important point which belongs to the field of orality research is the possibility of distinguishing the contributions of various groups and stages of formation of the Gospel on the basis of its orality. The elements of three such traditions – Jewish, Samaritan and Hellenistic – are further elaborated in this paper.

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

PRAGMATICS IN FOOD ADVERTISING

Author(s): Andreea DINU / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

Pragmatics has a very important role in understanding how advertising texts communicate and persuade beyond explicit messages. This paper investigates the frequently used strategies in food advertisements to influence the consumer's behavior and fasten decision-making processes. Through a qualitative approach, the current paper analyzes a diverse corpus of digital media food advertising texts. Implicature, presupposition, deixis, speech acts, and relevance are identified and analyzed by highlighting how these strategies create emotional responses, reinforce cultural values, and establish common assumptions between advertisers and consumers. This research proves that implicature is generally used in suggesting benefits and qualities that are not directly stated; presuppositions deepen the assumption about the health advantages or the quality offered by a product without claiming it. Deictic expressions and speech acts create personal relevance and psychological closeness through commands and invitations. Relevance theory shows how advertisers optimize the communicative impact. The study contributes to pragmatics, advertising, and consumer behavior by explaining how pragmatic strategies operate as powerful tools.

POSTURES OF THE BODY IN MICHEL DE MONTAIGNE, TRAVEL JOURNAL TO ITALY THROUGH SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY

POSTURES OF THE BODY IN MICHEL DE MONTAIGNE, TRAVEL JOURNAL TO ITALY THROUGH SWITZERLAND AND GERMANY

Author(s): Elena Jebelean / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

A traveler of the late Renaissance, the philosopher Michel de Montaigne was also an avant la lettre anthropologist, deeply concerned with all that is human. Accompanied by close companions and servants, he travelled through northern Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, reaching Rome, where he submitted the first two volumes of his Essays, recently completed, for Vatican censorship. His journey also had therapeutic purposes – crenotherapy and balneotherapy—prescribed for the kidney stones that tormented him. No longer a young man – he was already 47, only 11 years left to live – he experienced additional health issues along the way, such as migraines and toothaches, yet they did not diminish his intellectual vitality. Among many other observations, his travel journal not only records his reflections on his own body and its reactions to various treatments but also mentions the customs of the countries he traveled through regarding the body as a biological, ritualistic, aesthetic, political, and economic entity. A researcher of various aspects of reality, this uomo universale maintained a perpetually fresh perspective on the world, further enriched by the experience of travel. Rejecting the well-trodden paths of prejudice, he remained open to an active life, profoundly engaged in the pursuit of a full existence.Following his journey, which lasted one year and seven months (June 22, 1580 – November 30, 1581), Montaigne revisited and expanded the first two volumes of his Essays and wrote the third, reinforced in his belief that body and soul deserve equal consideration and care. He consistently emphasized that, regardless of the trials we face – many of which are beyond our control – our response to them, our state of mind, remains within our power. The most significant is the attitude we choose to endure what life brings. The ability to know ourselves as much as possible, in order to align our decisions with our nature, helps us live properly and face death at peace with ourselves.

GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURAL RESILLIENCE: OPORTUNITY OR THREAT?

GLOBALIZATION AND CULTURAL RESILLIENCE: OPORTUNITY OR THREAT?

Author(s): Doina David / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

This paper aims to explore the phenomenon of globalization from the perspective of its profound influence on world cultures, generating both opportunities and threats. On the one hand, globalization facilitates the exchange of ideas, cultural diversity, and access to new perspectives, contributing to the evolution of collective identities. On the other hand, cultural homogenization and the dominance of Western models can lead to the erosion of local traditions and the loss of national identities. From this perspective, we analyze the process of cultural resilience, which becomes essential for communities, enabling them to adapt to global changes without losing their specificity. Thus, globalization can be both an opportunity for cultural enrichment and a threat to diversity, depending on each society’s ability to protect and capitalize on its cultural heritage.

Author(s): Ștefan-Tiberiu Ciurea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

This article analyzes the procedural guarantees and the fundamental rights granted to minors in the context of deprivation of liberty in Great Britain and the United States of America, compared in some instances with Romania, as well as the legislative framework and practices applied in each jurisdiction. Through the comparative analysis, the article identifies significant similarities and differences in the approach to the protection of the rights of minors deprived of their liberty, highlighting good practices and legislative or practical gaps. The conclusions argue in favor of the adoption of common minimum standards at the international level, which would ensure respect for the fundamental rights of juveniles deprived of their liberty, regardless of jurisdiction.

RELIGION IN THE SOCIAL DYNAMICS: COSMOPOLITICIZATION ACCORDING TO ULRICH BECK

RELIGION IN THE SOCIAL DYNAMICS: COSMOPOLITICIZATION ACCORDING TO ULRICH BECK

Author(s): Iuliana Magdalena Neacsu (Lupeanu) / Language(s): English Issue: 40/2025

The world is constantly changing, and this process does not tend to be smooth. Religion is involved in this dynamic. The study aims to clarify the dimensions of the concept of cosmopolitization. Cosmopolitization is not the same as globalization. Globalization is something that somehow takes place outside a cultural, religious, national identity. Cosmopoliticization, by contrast, takes place 'inside', in the realm of the nation, the local, and even one's own biography and identity. The tendency of cosmopolitization is to dissolve the duality between global and local, national and international, and to merge them into new forms to be empirically analyzed. Cosmopoliticization refers to the erosion of borders that separate states, civilizations, cultures, religions. Borders have not disappeared, but they have become fluid, allowing flows of identity to pass from one side to the other. Cultural and religious differences are neither hierarchically organized nor dissolved but accepted for what they are and even positively affirmed.

Author(s): Antonia Dinu / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This paper focuses on the importance of understanding cultural and communication boundaries when teaching a foreign language. This topic is extremely relevant to the field of translation and interpretation as it provides us insight into the challenges that we encounter in trying to convey a message that has its cultural specificity. Managing and Assessing Collaborative Group Work in a Multi-Cultural Class: A Pragmatic and Constructive Approach

Author(s): Denisa Dumitrașcu / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This article undertakes a comprehensive literature review to explore the complexities of managing and assessing collaborative group work in multicultural classrooms in the post-pandemic educational landscape. Anchored in Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and Jude Carroll’s insights on educational mobility, the review critically examines the theoretical underpinnings and practical challenges associated with diverse learning environments. Bennett’s DMIS is employed as a framework to understand and navigate cultural differences within the classroom, while Carroll’s research provides an in-depth look at the adaptation challenges of educationally mobile students. Through a synthesis of existing literature, this paper proposes practical strategies for educators, aiming to enhance group dynamics and improve assessment methods in a way that promotes inclusivity and fairness. The goal is to enrich the academic discourse by providing a nuanced analysis of multicultural group work management and assessment, drawing from a wide range of empirical studies and case analyses.

Provocări în predarea limbii române ca limbă străină

Author(s): Simona Iacob / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3/2023

Learning the Romanian language as a foreign language is a continuous challenge, which also involves a deep psychological perspective on the part of the teachers because the students come from various cultures, have a different value system, are far from their environment and family, in a language unknown and a completely new culture. The student's desire to learn, the permanent help offered by the teaching staffand of course the individual study are some of the most important directions that can shape success. The challenges are therefore multiple, varied, contextual, but they can be successfully overcome through active involvement, enthusiasm, work, and perseverance.

Theorization of Violence (Israeli-Palestine Conflict)

Author(s): Georgiana Monica Iorga / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This paper is a text-applied comparative approach to some thematic aspects of the violence throughout theoretical texts belonging to philosophers like, for instance, Frantz Fanon (1925-1961, psychiatrist, philosopher, author from Martinique). Through violence decolonization is achieved, thus a new man is created. Violence is the native’s mean to an end: the formation of a just society. Colonizer’s violence (the violence of the colonial regime) versus Native’s violence (counter-violence). The appearance ot the settler represents the death of the aboriginal society, cultural lethargy and petrification of individuals. Rather than aiming at an exhaustive survey of this topic in English (almost an impossible task, given the amount of such writing that is being produced in the contemporary global age), I shall aim at focusing on a number of recurrent topics approached throughout the chosen theoretical work. My main intention will be to point out various ways in which the textuality of written texts reflect on issues related to ethnic conflict, self-identification, national movement, colonialist conflict, ideologies, religious dimension from a variety of theoretical perspectives, but situated mainly in a transnational and global light. Place and time are connected to memories and homeland as they represent important values for those who live in their homeland or in diaspora (place: where they were born and they spent their childhood or a part of their lives; time: events, customs and traditions associated to a certain moment in their lives).
