A volume devoted to the history of the Warsaw School of Economics, operating in the years 1862–1869. In this book the author interpretates the meaning of the duty of faithfulness to the Commonwealth of Poland described in the article 82 of the Constitution of Poland. Contesting to date findings of the doctrine of the Polish constitutional law on the meaning of this duty, the author is reaching to the Polish constitutional tradition, analysing consecutive Polish constitutions in order to find whether the duty of faithfulness was described in their text and to determine the interpretation of this duty by legal doctrine of that time. Moreover the author in his deliberations is making use of records of sessions of the Constitutional Commission of the National Assembly which was working on the project of the Constitution of Poland in years 1992–1997. The author is referring to the work of this Commission with purpose to determine how the duty of faithfulness to the Commonwealth of Poland as well as terms “the nation” and “the commonwealth” were then understood. Conclusions summarize the findings and establish the interpretation of the duty of faithfulness to the Commonwealth of Poland described in the article 82 of the Constitution of Poland.

Recepcja encykliki Rerum novarum papieża Leona XIII w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki w latach 1891–1919

The author of this book analyses the influence of the encyclical mentioned in the title on the situation of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States of America, and especially on how the social issue and workers' problems were perceived by the main figures in the American clergy. The basic research questions concern how sensitivity to social problems was fostered in the American clergy before and after the encyclical's publication (i.e. before and after 1891), and its influence on Catholic social teaching in the United States and on US federal legislation. The author posits that under the influence of the encyclical Rerum novarum, a unified social thought was formed in Catholics in the United States which was adapted to the realities and peculiarities of the American economy and society. The work focuses on the years 1891-1919, i.e. the period between the publication of the encyclical Rerum novarum and the publication of the Bishops' Program of Social Reconstruction. However, in order to present the particular conditions in which the Catholic Church functioned in the USA and the broader context related to its attitude to what was called ‘the workers' question’, the author draws on the Third Plenary Synod in Baltimore in 1884. In turn, after presenting the long-term effects of the reception of the demands contained in Pope Leo XIII's encyclical, he traces the influence of the Catholic social programme on federal legislation up to the 1930s.

The monograph attempts to reconstruct the history of sport infrastructure in Warsaw between the First and the Second World War. Sport was a rapidly developing sphere of social life in interwar Poland. Sport clubs, divisions and organizations sprang up, associating increasing numbers of people eager to spend their leisure time seeking fulfilment in physical competition. This, in turn, generated a need for the development of sport infrastructure: sports fields, running tracks, tennis courts, ice rinks, cycling tracks, boating harbours. In 1918–1939, hundreds of new sport facilities were erected – from impressive complexes of the Central Institute for Physical Education or the Służewiec Racecourse all the way to local sports fields, school swimming pools and workplace shooting ranges.

A Historical, Liturgical and Musical Exploration of Kondakarnoie Pienie. The Deciphering of a Medieval Slavic Enigma

Kondakarnoie pienie is one of medieval music's enduring mysteries. The nature of its repertory and the deciphering of its musical script are beset with complex problems. The key to the direct transcription of Kondakarian musical notation has not survived, had it ever existed in the first place; an exact rendering of the Kondakarian neumes into modern staff notation is for now impossible owing to the peculiar nature of the signs. Aside from the contrasting cultural climates of the Byzantine Greeks and Medieval Slavs, local customs produce variants within a common manuscript tradition, and the considerable chronological differences separating the surviving corpus of manuscripts further complicates the situation. While those who have examined the Kondakar have universally acknowledged the Byzantine origins of its notation, the absence of a transcribable Byzantine intermediary has kept the decoding of the enigmatic script elusive, with the result that the bulk of its richest repertory, i.e., the kontakia, has remained indecipherable.

Poszukiwacz sensu wśród strzępków historii. Wokół „Z. Po-wieści” Mieczysława Porębskiego

The book is devoted to the reconstruction and analysis of the philosophy of history and philosophy of culture, an outline of which Mieczysław Porębski presented in Z. Po-wieść (1989). This work is sometimes classified as a postmodern “professorial novel”, while the author of A seeker of sense among the strands of history tries to demonstate that the bricolage poetics is mainly staffage, as the distinguished art historian and theorist was motivated by the desire to reflect on the historical process and the meaning of European culture for contemporaries. The leitmotif of Z. is the wandering of the title character through the history and literature of the Old Continent, considered in the monograph i.a. in relation to the composition, the world presented, the autothematism, the philosophical assumptions and the ideological meaning of the novel. The authoress analyzes the figure of the protagonist, genological issues, the problem of historiography and narrative, and the textual implication of the authorial subject. She considers the dialectic between the search for universal truths about human nature and the imperative to convey the truth of one’s own time, and furthermore presents the futuristic predictions of the author of Iconosphere. Finally, she shows the hermeneutic perspective as the best one to interpret Z., as it is revealed in the actions and utterances of the protagonist himself, who seeks the essential message of tradition and the meaning of historical experience.
