Kanonske vizitacije Senjske i Modruške (Krbavske) biskupije

Author(s): / Language(s): Croatian

Polacy, Żydzi i mit handlu kobietami

Author(s): Aleksandra Jakubczak / Language(s): Polish

The author looks at the issue of women trafficking at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. She considers how to explain the widespread interest in the practice compared with very few cases of the trafficking confirmed by historical sources. The author also puts a question if laying responsibility for the practice on the partitioning powers and the Jews was reflected in reality. In her research, the author used methodologies assuming the existence of moral panic and the myth of women trafficking.

Prawda i fałsz w nauce i sztuce

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The authors discuss truth and falsehood in science and the arts. They view truth as an irreducible point of reference, both in striving for elementary knowledge about the world and in seeking methods and artistic means of achieving this goal. The multilevel and multiple-aspect research presented here, conducted on material from different periods and different cultures, shows very clearly that truth and falsehood lie at the foundation of all human motivation, choices, decisions, and behaviors. At the same time, however, it reveals that every bid to extrapolate the results of detailed studies into generalizations aimed at universalization – by the very fact of their discursivation – either subjects the discussion to the rules of formal logic or situates it outside the realm of truth and falsehood.

A university without its own publishing house is like a cathedral without an organ: wild-growing and silent. Masaryk University has got its publishing house, which even ranks among the largest in Central Europe by the number of publications, tirelessly spreading university knowledge and ethos not only through books, but on all present-day conceivable media. This jubilee publication brings a colourful panorama of the Munipress publishing house activities together with a historical overview. It is dedicated to the centenary of the Masaryk University and to all the silenced authors in its history.

La prose néofantastique d’expression française aux XXe et XXIe siècles

Author(s): Katarzyna Gadomska / Language(s): French

The work constitutes an attempt to describe the poetics of the 20th and 21st century neo‑fantastic prose of selected French‑speaking countries (France, Belgium, Quebec). The analyses of the material made use of such research methods as a semiotic description of the character (A. Greimas’ actantial model), Ph. Hamon’s semiological model and U. Eco and V. Jouve’s semiopragmatic method. The first chapter covers basic elements of the world presented in literary works: time, space, their chronotop (M. Bachtin) and personage, responsible for creating a mimetic illusion crucial to the formation of the fantastic effect. The next chapter was devoted to the manifestations of “a fantastic phenomenon”, taking on the shapes of the following anxiogenic figures: a ghost, vampire, psychopath (also in gore movie), double, woman, fear‑evoking objects. The next chapter concentrated on the presentation of special ethics and aesthetics of fantastic prose these days, describing above all the evil, ugliness, the negative and repulsive (all possible perversions and sexual deviations, pure evil, cruelty). The last chapter discusses the form of works within the scope of “new fantastic literature”: selected elements of a paratext according to G. Genette (an incipit, excipit, preface), forms and structures of narration, as well as traditional and new writing techniques typical of the genre of fantastic literature exclusively. A conclusion constitutes an attempt to answer the question on the scope within which contemporary fantastic literature modifies definitions of traditional fantastic literature and to what an extent it continues or diverges from canonic fantastic literature. The appendix includes versions of “urban legends” in extenso, as well as notes bringing the profiles of the French‑speaking writers closer.

The first book is dedicated to the novel "Pharaoh" by Bolesław Prus (Faraon, 1895) and the film "Pharaoh" by Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Faraon, 1965), the drama "The Wedding" by Stanisław Wyspiański (Wesele, 1901) and the film "The Wedding" by Andrzej Wajda (Wesele, 1972), and the novel "Mother Joan of the Angels" by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (Matka Joanna od Aniołów, 1946) and Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s film "Mother Joan of the Angels" (Matka Joanna od Aniołów, 1960).

Stanisław Konarski przed Świętym Oficjum, 1769–1771

Author(s): Paweł Zając / Language(s): Polish,Latin,Italian

Fr. Stanisław Konarski (1700–1773), Piarist, was one of the most outstanding figures in Polish intellectual life in the 18th century. His last book O religii poczciwych ludzi [On the Religion of Honest Men] (1769) was read with great interest for over two hundred years – first by its contemporary readers, then by historians of ideas and researchers of the Polish Enlightenment. In both cases, the book did not cease to attract attention due to the atmosphere of the scandal, which at the end of the Konarski’s life had reached wide circles – from the Warsaw nunciature to the Congregation of the Holy Office in Rome. The basic facts related to the trial, which took place in the Roman curia, were known to Polish historiography, but thus far only superficially. Hitherto unknown documents from the archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (former Holy Office) allow for the accurate reconstruction of the turbulent history of a book which in fact risked being including in the Index of Forbidden Books, even though it was written in defence of Christianity against 18th-century deism.

Aus dem evangelischen Pfarrhaus in Lodz und Umgebung: Die Literatur der evangelisch-augsburgischen Dichterpfarrer 1839-1939. Eine kommentierte Anthologie

Author(s): Monika Kucner / Language(s): German

Within several dozen years, a society with extreme social contrasts emerged in Lodz, in which the ethnically foreign (German and Jewish) bourgeoisie played the leading role. Two strata dominated in the city, the aforementioned bourgeoisie and the workers. Somewhere on the fringes of society there were still a limited number of intelligentsia. The middle class, which included petty industrialists, civil servants and representatives of the so-called liberal professions such as doctors, teachers, journalists, lawyers and writers, also existed to a small extent. But Lodz needed such people who would have been an important carrier of social development and a stabilizing force. This group includes people who care about the spiritual and moral development of society. Their role is based on upholding culture, tradition and beliefs and instilling ethical values. Łódź society growing up under the conditions of capitalism, where money was the most important value, needed special spiritual care. Because of this, the clergy played an important role in the city. They should primarily spread the faith in society and care for the salvation of the soul of the population. The Lodz clergy not only taught the faith or played the role of moral authority, they often acted as mediators, educators in the cultural sphere. They often took up pen to put their thoughts on paper. They wrote literary and journalistic texts in German or Polish and published them in local newspapers and magazines or, more rarely, in book form. Journalistic and literary writing was particularly popular with Lutheran clergy. They made it possible to develop an aesthetic feeling in a form other than just the Sunday sermon, to awaken a taste for the beautiful in art, and to lead the faithful to assimilate a set of sensual and spiritual values of the Evangelical-Augsburg faith. This anthology presents a small part of a more extensive body of writing by Evangelical-Augsburg pastors from Lodz and the surrounding area from 1839 to 1939. The main part of the volume is the collection of texts by German-speaking poet pastors, including Philipp Kreutz, Rudolf Gundlach and August Hermann Müller. The publication is an anthology with comments, i.e. a collection of texts with a detailed commentary on the history of the city and the development of Evangelical-Augsburg parishes in Lodz and the surrounding area in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Zapisy codzienności...

Author(s): Elżbieta Wichrowska / Language(s): Polish

The book addresses the issue of place and role in culture and 19th century everyday life of two forms: the illness diary and the painter’s sketchbook as testimonies of a phenomenon referred to as the privacy turn. Its participants included not only professional artists but also by amateurs of different status, regardless of gender and age. The book, based on hitherto unknown archive sources, shows the significance of that movement and describes some such sources (Wanda Czartoryska’s illness diary, the sketchbooks of the Branicki family, which include unknown sketches of very young Wojciech Kossak), pointing to the diversity of their forms and the transformations they underwent.

Ślady egzystencji. Dzienniki – sploty życia i twórczości w literaturze Europy Środkowej (1890–1920): Csáth, Irzykowski, Klíma

Author(s): Mateusz Chmurski / Language(s): Polish

The book presents common threads of life and work of Karol Irzykowski (1873-1944), Ladislav Klíma (1878-1928) and Géza Csáth (1883-1919) as potentially representative for modernism (and the experience of modernity) in Central European literatures and cultures in the transnational and comparative perspective. The starting point for reflection are diaries, in which the self-record becomes the matrix of innovative prose of the three authors as well as the inspiration for (autobiographically marked) critical-literary reflection on the borderline of Irzykowski’s culture theory, Klíma's anti-system philosophy and Csáth’s exploration of the limits of literature and psyche.

The monograph is a fruit of research by representatives of a variety of academic disciplines: historians, cultural and literary studies scholars, and linguists studying Central-Eastern Europe. The book consists of two essays: “To forgive?” and “With honour and dignity.” Both deal with the issue of forgiveness for the wrongs committed by Nazi Germany during the period of the Second World War. “To forgive?” – an essay devoted to the Holocaust in which the author openly opposes the attitude of those who not only wish to forget about the crimes committed by the Nazi criminals but also more or less consciously belittle their significance. “With honour and dignity” – a polemical analysis of French society whose attitude and choices resulted in France playing the role it played during the Second World War.
