Reformacja w Polsce a dziedzictwo Erazma z Rotterdamu

Author(s): Maciej Ptaszyński / Language(s): Polish

The author presents the history of the Reformation in the Kingdom of Poland in the years 1518–1566, with a particular emphasis on the role of Polish erasmen, understood both as friends and correspondents of Erasmus from Rotterdam, and – more broadly – as admirers of his works. The text presents the Reformation as a process in which the question about the foundations of faith entailed theological, social and political changes. They co-created the erstwhile reformation in Poland and shaped the processes of the entire society, being at the same time participants in these processes.

Ewolucja. Twórcza moc selekcji

Author(s): Jerzy Dzik / Language(s): Polish

An instructive introduction to the theory of evolution and its applications in biology, physics, chemistry, geology and humanities. The author shows that evolution is a physical process, occurring in geological time dimension, describes how the Darwin’s theory of natural selection works in immunology, neurobiology, sociology as well as in certain aspects of culture and political institutions. He also shows the effects achieved through the action of selection in different areas of biological and social life. He discusses such problems as: the ambiguity of the term “theory of evolution”, the falsifiability of evolutionary hypotheses, connection between evolution and thermodynamics, the concept of reductionism, methodological background of phylogenetics, cladistics, evolutionary developmental biology and homeotic genes, as well as the cumulative nature of social and cultural evolution.

Our Mythical Education. The Reception of Classical Myth Worldwide in Formal Education, 1900-2020

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Clearly, wherever myth forms part of an educational syllabus, value judgements have been made by those who chose the texts, with regard to content, approach, usage, emphases, purpose and many other elements. [...] the present volume examines the reception of such myth within formal education in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries […]. It focuses for the most part on school education, but with forays into post-high school where relevant, and includes a wide geographical and chronological range. With regard to the latter limitations, the general emphasis is on modern day, and the current situation, but as a result of individual historical circumstances in each example (Lisa Maurice, Editor of the Volume). This is a task of paramount importance, as educational processes have a lasting influence on us – all the more so as we are exposed to them already in childhood, when the capacity for critical thinking is being formed by none other than school curricula shaped and developed in specific circumstances. This volume makes us aware of these complex processes, their implications, and the opportunities they create for the future of Classical Antiquity (Katarzyna Marciniak, Editor of the Series).

Daleko i blisko. Szkice o prozie XX wieku

Author(s): Zdzisław Marcinów / Language(s): Polish

"Far away and yet so near" is a metaphoric title that somehow defines all the collected texts. It embraces what is here and now as well as what seems distinctive, imperishable and… essential? Even if not – still important and inseparable. All of the discussed writers – Konwicki, Kuncewiczowa, Stojowski, Vincenz, Hemar, Wierzyński, Filipowicz, Pavel – are without a doubt virtuosos, who undertook a breakneck task of engraving their pivotal, fundamental experiences in literature. The collection includes essays sharing a clearly determined theme – autobiographic works of writers, who experienced war, occupation, Eastern Polish and Galician myths, as well as post-war political turmoil – including Stalinism, social realism and the Polish thaw. The inclusion of the trope of angling, present in the writings of Kornel Filipowicz and Ota Pavel, an exceptional author from the Czech Republic, may come as a surprise. It is easy to underestimate its importance, but the theme is by no means trivial. The moments of solitude in the wild, with a fishing rod as a sole companion, were cherished times of escape from the war trauma.

Powojenna historiografia polska jako pole walki

Author(s): Valentin Behr / Language(s): Polish

The book proposes a sociological analysis of Polish historiography of the contemporary period that treats the creation of Polish history as a type of public policy. Based on rich empirical material and using a number of research methods, most notably Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of fields, the author argues that policy of this kind was pursued, albeit using somewhat different methods, both in the People’s Republic of Poland and after the fall of communism. In keeping with this approach, the historians he studies are also seen as co-creators of historical policy, inevitably entangled in processes of instrumentalizing history, which Valentin Behr systematically investigates in terms of interrelations between social fields.

Our Mythical Hope

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Classical Antiquity is a particularly important field in terms of “Hope studies” […]. For centuries, the ancient tradition, and classical mythology in particular, has been a common reference point for whole hosts of creators of culture, across many parts of the world, and with the new media and globalization only increasing its impact. Thus, in our research at this stage, we have decided to study how the authors of literary and audiovisual texts for youth make use of the ancient myths to support their young protagonists (and readers or viewers) in crucial moments of their existence, on their road into adulthood, and in those dark hours when it seems that life is about to shatter and fade away. However, if Hope is summoned in time, the crisis can be overcome and the protagonist grows stronger, with a powerful uplifting message for the public. […] Owing to this, we get a chance to remain true to our ideas, to keep faith in our dreams, and, when the decisive moment comes, to choose not hatred but love, not darkness but light. (Katarzyna Marciniak, University of Warsaw, From the introductory chapter)

W poszukiwaniu „dobrego życia”. U filozoficznych podstaw głównych orientacji politycznego myślenia. Wyd. 2

Author(s): Wojciech Kaute / Language(s): Polish

A human being gets organized in a nation, as Aristotle says, for “a good life”. However, according to him, one has to differentiate between “a good citizen” and “good man”. The history of philosophy has created various polis conceptions as a result of the fact that a human being, in its cognition, cannot situate itself in a position of the one who knows an “objective” good, “truth”. Each cognition is just a “vision” and interpretation of the world. Thus, one has to assume that a reflection on culture equals a reconstruction of these “visions”. This is a history of ideas. Such a reconstruction is also an interpretation. The situation gets complicated in the post-world. Traditional languages lose their significance in a global world of mass culture. And that means that the status of the history of ideas, this interpretation of interpretations, gets too unclear these days.

Opowiedzieć historię. Polska dramaturgia współczesna po 2006 roku

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Publication ”To Tell a Story. Polish Contemporary Dramaturgy after 2006” is an attempt to analyse the historical narratives in the newest Polish theatre and drama. Starting from the classical canon of memory studies, shaped by researchers such as Pierre Nora, Marianne Hirsch, Jan and Aleida Assmann or Maurice Halbwachs, young theatre researchers look at methods, reasons, aims and effects of including historical and memory narratives into performances and dramas. Due to the variety of research approaches and topics undertaken by both the authors of articles and theatre artists, the issue of telling the history in Polish theatre and drama was treated in a cross-sectional area. The book deals with the themes of peasant stories, stories related to the place (memory spaces), memory transfers between generations, or feminist revision of history, among others. Using examples of selected dramatic texts and plays (not only representing dramatic theatre, but also musical, puppet or physical theatre), the dramaturgical conventions and narrative strategies employed by theatre makers that influence the construction of stories about the past are analysed.

Listy do matki niewysłane (1940–1941)

Author(s): Tadeusz Brudziński / Language(s): Polish

An edition of five letters written between 23 September 1940 and 22 May 1941 by Tadeusz Brudziński to his mother, Alina Brudzińska née Mierzejewska. The author was son to the first dean of the University of Warsaw after its rival in 1915, himself an agricultural engineer and Master of Arts in Law, during the Second World War Tadeusz Brudziński was an officer of the Polish Army and the Polish Armed Forces in the West. Originally written without the intention to send them to the addressee but rather a way for news of the author’s fate to reach his family in case of his demise, the letters are a valuable source for the study of Vilnius during the September Campaign of 1939, the tribulations of Polish officers as they pushed through Lithuania, Latvia and Sweden to France, and above all of the 1st (201st) Pomeranian Heavy Artillery Regiment, its formation, combat trail, and the fate of its soldiers and officers during the French Campaign of 1940. They also feature asides describing the daily life in London under German bombardment and the everyday life of their author which shade on the issues that usually elude researchers, like the contacts emigres had with occupied Poland and the material aspect of their lives. This edition of Tadeusz Brudziński’s letters is accompanied by an extensive biographical introduction, based on official documents as well material from the family archive, which also allowed for including photographs of the author and his mother.
