The authors discuss the notions of knowledge about the EU and intercultural competence as important aspects of citizenship education in the context of modern language education. Exploring the integration potential between the Bulgarian language and the other languages studied at secondary school outlines some opportunities for students to learn about the EU and develop intercultural competence, which are presented in the paper. The theoretical analysis and practical solutions have been realized within the project “Promoting Excellence in Teaching and Research in EU Studies at Primary and Secondary School Level through Digital and Virtualisation Tools. An emphasis is laid on the teaching materials suitable for studying EU-related topics which are based on the integral links among the studied languages, on the selected teaching methods and techniques, as well as on the variety of envisaged activities.

Reading involves various processes that range from visual identification of writing to understanding the content and context. The main objective of this study is to fathom out the initial process of learning to read (decoding and comprehension) for students from first and second grade. The following tests were used: rapid serial naming (objects and letters), phonological awareness (manipulation and rhyme), picture vocabulary, decoding of words and reading comprehension.This study found statistically significant differences in all components observed in both age groups – students from first and second grade. Decoding of words has strongest correlation with the rapid naming of letters, phonological awareness and rapid naming of objects. Reading comprehension has strongest correlation with vocabulary size, phonological awareness and decoding of words. There was a statistically significant difference between the sexes in terms of phonological awareness, vocabulary size and reading comprehension.Predictors for the decoding of words for Bulgarian students from first and second grade are: the speed at which they read, rapid naming of letters and their level of phonological awareness. Predictors of the reading comprehension are: vocabulary, ability of segmentation and rapid naming of letters.

The purpose of this article is revealing the conditions and prerequisites for the “birth” of the entrepreneurial class in Sopot, Karlovo and Kalofer during the 18th-19th centuries. The main conclusion is that the combination of a favorable external environment and appropriate personal qualities make possible the appearance of people with enterprising spirit. In other words, Bulgarian Revival entrepreneurs from Sopot, Karlovo and Kalofer are born, but they are also made through the accumulated experience and knowledge.

European education legislation defines two main objectives of education policy: equal access to education and quality education. Equal access to education means ensuring that all children and students have access to commensurate quality education. It does not mean equal care for all children and students, but differentiation of care towards their different needs. Access to quality education, not education at all, is an essential tool in the process of promoting integration and inclusion of both minorities and marginalized groups, as well as groups of children and individuals with peculiarities and non-standard development in our society.

The use of the teamwork, supported by their teachers and parents, is outlined. The use of a test for measuring the success rate of students in the control and experimental group in conducting the didactic experiment aims to establish and compare the level formation of the communication speech competence in these groups of persons. The analysis of the data obtained will help the reporting of the results, which has reached each of the classes. This will demonstrate sustainability in the development of the students and will take into account the effectiveness of didactic technology for improving education. All diagnostic procedures that are used confirm the relationship and dependence on learning the pupils’ linguistic and literary knowledge, as well as increasing school success by the representatives of the experimental group.

The study is devoted to little-known facts related to the participation and contribution of the troops of the 11th Marching Regiment to the victory achieved in the battles for control of the heavily fortified area in the Machin. The data presented come to fill the gap in the researches regarding the participation of the marching formations and in particular of the 11th Marching Regiment in the battles as part of the 3rd Army. The presented information helps to clarify and supplement the general picture of the events on the front, by revealing specific details of the course of the hostilities, which so far have not fallen within the scope of attention of the scientific community. Also, a good basis is created for the formation of reasonable conclusions about the significance of the achieved victory. Archival materials have been put into circulation, which reveal new facts about the battles in the Dobrudzha region. The presented brief information about the marching regiments and the combat history of the regiment helps to clarify the nature and purpose of these units, taking into account the fact that the available information about them is more than modest and insufficient. The presented data are entirely based on materials from the State Military Historical Archives – Veliko Tarnovo.

The article’s purpose is twofold. First, it aims at demonstrating the heuristic potential of the capability approach in rethinking the lifelong learning and in particular the non-formal education. Second, it aims at exploring the factors which influence the participation in non-formal education among the group of young adults in a European comparative perspective. At a theoretical level, it applies the capability approach framework to the conceptualizing non-formal education as a capability. At a methodological level, it makes a secondary data analysis on Adult Education Survey (2011) and the official statistics by using descriptive statistics and multilevel modeling for 17 countries. The results show that there are considerable differences in the participation in non-formal education between the European countries and that the participation in non-formal education is much more than personal responsibility and is, in fact, a result of a wide range of factors both at individual and country level. These factors may constrain but also enable the chances which young adults have to participate in non-formal education. Among the factors which are identified as important at the country level are the economic climate, the active labour market measures, the expenses paid by the employers for training and the level of innovation.

The article shares the school experience in developing and participating in various projects over the last ten years. The approach to accomplishing these projects is an essential part of the motivation for better inclusion in the learning process both by students and teachers. Professional competencies are enhanced substantially among students who have completed internship outside of Bulgaria. The acquaintance of the teachers with the organization and curricula of the other European countries increases the quality of the regular educational process in our school.

The views of Todor Bourmov for the government of Bulgaria are reflected in a document stored in Russian archives. At the first its publication,the document was defined as a response of one of the Bulgarian notables – Todor Bourmov – to the questions of the Russian civil administration in Bulgaria from1878, and in the second – as rules for the election of a Bulgarian prince. According contained in this article concept, in both cases there are errors and inaccuracies, but in principle, the document itself contains a number of provisions found a place in the initial draft of the Organic Statute of the Bulgarian principality.

The text examines the role of the learning experiment and the work on projects for formation of students‘ key competences in natural sciences. With its realization, we confirmed that the learning experiment and the project work are methods of actively understanding the scientific research, while the curriculum in the field of natural sciences suggests a wide range of practical exercises. The methods used were assumed to be of great importance for acquiring knowledge, skills and habits, and as one of the methods of creating a positive attiude. The paper examines the way the idea originates, what are the aims, tasks and activities of the project and what results have been achieved. The project was awarded by the jury of the 17th National Competition for Natural Sciences and Ecology – Vidin, 2018, with the special prize for practical applicability. The modern educational system changes the laws and regulations, requiring from students to acquire knowledge, skills, and qualities to serve them later both at university and workplace. The idea that students should be able to choose two additional profiling subjects for detailed study in XI and XII grades gives them the floor to prepare themselves for their career development. To accomplish this, teachers and students need working materials, made in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science and the universities. The proposed model of providing learning content in Chemistry and Environmental Protection covers the curricula for the second stage in secondary education with new emphasis on the areas of professional focus in higher education. The model is tailored to the requirements of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and is divided into four modules. The new moments in the learning content model are thematic structure, methods of analysis and chemical production, integrated in the topics, computer modeling programs, possibility of application in the development of professionally-focused components of learning content.

The article is reviewing the educational aids of classical literature in the context of publishing and education politics based on already published products that are in circulation on the market in the period 1990-2014. The analysis consists of a comparison of the internal elements such as selection of the texts, placing the application and textual preparation which allows us to divide them into two groups: Conventional – this is characterized by a complete structural and genre harmony between the components of each volume in the series. Commercial – characterized by the low quality of the editorial process. Both groups show the nature of the publishing choices, which vary widely, and allow us to talk about differences between these seemingly identical publishing products.
