COUNTERACTING OF EDUCATIONAL INEQUALITIES THROUGH THE DIGITIZATION OF EDUCATION: AN ANALYSIS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE THEORY OF SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE

Author(s): Elena Bujorean / Language(s): English Issue: 16/2021

The present paper uses the concept of “symbolic violence” to explain the causes of certain educational inequalities, including limited access to some resources, including technology. The reference to P. Bourdieu’s theory regarding symbolic violence is the theoretical framework adopted by us in order to question the principle of equity in formal education. Up to Bourdieu, the school was recognized as an institution of the reproduction of theoretical and practical knowledge. The French sociologist’s merit lies in that he proved its role in the production/reproduction of class relations, of society in its essence. By revealing a series of mechanisms of social and cultural reproduction through formal education, the French sociologist, together with J. Passeron, clarified symbolic violence as a form of gentle, invisible violence, not acknowledged as such. They explain the inequalities of the academic success by cultural and motivational factors: the inequalities appear due to the fact that formal education applies the same treatment to the pupils who are not equally armed with the elements of school culture. Symbolic violence can take the form of denying access to resources or limiting the realistic aspirations of young people. Thus, e-learning platforms that require high-speed internet provide important materials and learning experiences to which not all students have access. On the other hand, conservatives believe that too much emphasis is placed on these technological changes, to the detriment of other curricular innovations. The paper presents not only the impact of the theory put forward by the French sociologists in their analysis of school practices characterized by exclusion, marginalisation, inequity, but also the optimizing perspective introduced by Bourdieu. It is a good idea to bring again to the attention of practitioners, researchers and decision-makers in the field of education, the problems of the reproduction in the academic area of some social and cultural inequalities; in this way, interest can be raised in assessing the impact of the educational policies destined to increasing equity in the field of education.

Heuristic Potential of Transformative Learning Ideas

Author(s): Svetlana Hanaba,Olena Voitiuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The transformative learning ideas focus the educational process on the maximum development of a person’s abilities, the creation of a powerful motivation for self-development. In this process, a significant role is played by not so much the ability to acquire new knowledge, as the ability to comprehend and rethink previously acquired knowledge and skills critically. Transformation immanently reflects the learning essence, which is realized in a natural, arbitrary way and is based on a person’s intellectual abilities, physiological characteristics and mental inclinations. The learning result is to present not only the world to a person, but also a person to the world. In the educational process, a person overcomes his own essential limitation, opens new horizons of his existence. Educational activity appears as a system of flexible and dynamically cognitive connections with the socio-cultural context oriented to the advanced learning strategy. The learning becomes a process of a person’s self-knowledge, self-creation, self-construction while participating in the educational interaction and social environment.

Синхронно vs. aсинхронно, или защо „онлайн лекция“ не е синоним на „дистанционно обучение“

Author(s): Silvana Karagyozova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

This article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the asynchronous and synchronous forms of communication and knowledge acquisition in distance learning in higher education. The importance of the specific topic is dictated by the need to acquire the understanding that the distinction between the two forms of education is not based on quality, but rather clarifies the technological circumstances in which the process of teaching takes place. Manifesting the superiority of only one of the forms, and thus limiting the educational process to this one form, would be detrimental to the students. Arguments are given as to why online lectures, which represent the synchronous form, cannot and should not be the only favorite, which is the trend and bias that is currently observed. In addition to some determining factors for deciding on the appropriate form of education for the purpose, newer studies based on environmental and motivational factors are also indicated, in which we find sufficiently valid prerequisites and statistically significant findings for the use of both forms - conscious, effective, logical and methodically justified.

Levels of Transformational Changes in Motor Status of Preschool Children under the Influence of Different Models of Exercise Programs

Author(s): Nebojsa Jotov,Zeljko Rajkovic,Vladimir Miletić / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Directed motor activity can affect the anthropological status of children more effectively than unstructured and free activities. The paper examines the impact of two three – month programs on the transformation of the anthropological status of male children aged 6. A statistically significant difference was confirmed in all tested variables (running 20m, backwards polygon, hand tapping, sitting forward lean, long jump, sit up, hand plank) between the initial and final measurements. The outdoor polygon led to greater positive changes in the motor status of preschool children than shaping exercises with elements of games. It is necessary to further investigate the optimal relationship between these two types of directed exercises.

Author(s): Valentina Chileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

Over the last decade, in terms of the learning process, methodologists and educators have been actively looking for a variety of means to motivate students' cognitive activity. This is related to the development and application in teaching practice of new approaches and didactic systems. This article examines the possibility of increasing the level of acquisition of mathematical knowledge by first grade students by applying the technique of “independent data collection” in the learning process. The knowledge of first grade students who have mastered the curriculum in mathematics with the help of independent research is diagnosed, establishing the effect of this activity on the level of mathematical knowledge.

Mедийно образование за деца: предизвикателствата на новото дигитално общество

Author(s): Katya Stoyanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The paper considers media and digital education as a prerequisite for adopting the new trends in education and adjustment to the needs and specifics of the digital society of the 21st century. It launches the idea to start teaching children from preschool when they have already interacted purposefully with various media products. Emphasis is on understanding digital and media literacy beyond the technical ability of children to handle media products, which in itself is important but insufficient in the set of knowledge and skills needed to understand, master, and participate in the vast and ever-changing media environment.

Distance learning: Homemade colloidal silver

Author(s): Jorge G. Ibanez,Ana Sofia Covarrubias-Montero / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

To continue the experimental education of Chemical Engineering students during the SARS-Covid 19 pandemic, our school opted for assembling laboratory kits for each one of them and sending them by courier service to their homes. This arose much interest and was particularly successful in an Electrochemistry and Corrosion elective course, because up to 25 experiments were performed in each of the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters. By having their kits at home, students were also able to design experiments on their own. One such experiment –the preparation of a colloidal silver solution– only required readily available kit materials and some other home and kitchen items to produce an easily observable Ag colloidal solution. Lower classes (e.g., General Chemistry, High School Chemistry) should be able to reproduce this experiment as well. The entire procedure can be completed in 1 h.

Author(s): Tanya Ganeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

By integrating STEM activities in students’ learning areas, the children have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to adapt to a dynamically evolving pragmatic and technological environment. The skills developed through STEM provide them with a solid foundation for success, both in school and in real life. The biggest advantage of STEM is the unification of the individual disciplines of the curriculum. It is very appropriate to use binary lessons. The binary lesson is a work of two teachers, which grows into a creative process of the students. Why? Because it is always interesting on the border of science, because the activities there cause high motivation. This is the main goal of education – to engage students, to provoke creative search and cognitive activity.

The concept of entrepreneurship as a competence is very important for achieving smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth in the context of European policies. The employment growth, reducing poverty or social exclusion, personal and career development largely depends on the rise of entrepreneurship. Promoting entrepreneurship for sustainable development should start at school age when is the best time for development of the entrepreneurial mindset and bringing up social activity. The article summarizes observations and analysis of the results of the Innovative Learning System (InnoSchool). This system copes with the weak entrepreneurial culture and low engagement of young people towards social innovation and entrepreneurship. The training system uses intensive learning interaction between direct participants, students and teachers on one hand, and all concerned parties from school, local and regional authorities, business, educational institutions and non-governmental organisations on the other hand. The result is a change in the attitude of high school students regarding entrepreneurship, motivation and dedication to social responsibilities, which would have a positive impact on their future professional career.

The postmodern didactic paradigm relies on contextuality, on the interrelationships in the course of pedagogical interaction, on the diversity of learning styles and teaching methods, on the changing learning environment. An important part of the postmodern didactic paradigm is information and communication technologies, which not only facilitate students in searching and processing information, but also allow working together outside the classroom, building a personal learning environment and self-organization of learning. The article outlines the role of students' digital literacy in achieving learning goals, in the realization of problem-based learning, personality-oriented and interdisciplinary approach in History and Civilization classes. Didactic solutions are presented in which students enrich their knowledge of socio-political processes in Bulgaria and in the Balkans in the mid-20s of the 20th century by performing practical tasks and solving a learning problem according to individual progress and participation of each student in teamwork.
