In the process of translation of philosophical texts, especially those concerning realistic metaphysics, a complication arises, which ultimately determines the meaning of words and whole sentences. This gives rise to the problem-related triad, namely: standardization of vocabulary, abstractionalization of terms, and fragmentation of the functions of language. Standardization of language manifests itself in the fact that, instead of rich and diverse synonyms a single term appears, with which diverse processes and actions are named. Abstractionalization of language, in turn, is that language arrests our cognitive attention at terms and concepts, and compels us to analyze them. Fragmentation of the language functions consists in the breaking up of their threefold unity: semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic, and focusing instead on a single one of them: either semantic (concerning sense), or syntactic (concerning structure), or pragmatic (concerning usefulness). This triad is directly linked to the processes of translation of original metaphysical texts into foreign languages, and the resulting issues are discussed in this article. Of course, this triad represents current language trends encountered in various areas. However, in the field of translating the language of realistic philosophy, i.e. metaphysics that has real things as its object, the cognitive “seeing” of that object should be guided by language.

The aim of the article is to describe a phenomenon of value added and lost at the lexical and semantic level in the literary translation. The study is based on the analysis of the parallel Polish-Italian text of the drama Przed sklepem jubilera [The jeweller’s shop] by Karol Wojtyła. The comparison of the original Polish text with its Italian translation made it possible to distinguish semantic nuances lost at the lexical level of the translation, while the results of the reverse operation (comparison of the target text in Italian with the source text in Polish) prove the presence of many “added” lexical elements in the final text. They are mostly multi-word combinations with varying degrees of idiomaticity, i.e. phraseological units. Traces of semantic losses as well as added elements clearly indicate a creative role of the literary translator who becomes in this way the “second author” of a text.

In recent years there has been a reassessment of the role of translation and translations in foreign language teaching and education (Cook; Laviosa; Carreres, « Translation »). In 2001 the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) recognized translation and interpretation as a language activity which is called mediation. Literary translation is being proposed as a mediation activity intended to develop the (written) mediation competence of foreign language learners. This article reports on the results of a case study in which we examine to what extend the L2 translation of drama indeed does enhance mediation skills of language learners. In this case study, we decided to investigate the extent to which Dutch language learners apply mediation strategies when translating an excerpt from Przed sklepem jubilera (The Jeweler’s Shop) (written by Karol Wojtyła) in Dutch (L2), and the extent to which their strategies differ from those we found in the (official) Dutch translation of the play.

The objective of this study is to demonstrate how the transition from specific to generic is effectuated in the determination of the word souffrance within an annexation construction: souffrance + N, or N + de la souffrance in Salvifici Doloris of Jean-Paul II. The study examines the translation of the word souffrance through a French-Arabic contrastive lens, using two parameters: article and category of number. The analysis reveals that there were several types of translations of the word souffrance. Accordingly, the translation of la souffrance de l’homme is to have different values that vary depending on whether the translation is rendered as: noun + noun alam al-insān, noun + adjective alam bašariyy, or verbal sentence with a nuance of passivity. In addition, because Arabic, unlike French, does not possess a plural-article, nouns are often transformed in order to take the plural form. As a result of this peculiarity, most translations form French to Arabic tend to render generic singular nouns to plural, such as in the instance of la souffrance du Christ thereby emphasizing the diversity under unity.

This article constitutes a contrastive analysis of the discourse of John Paul II and precisely of the linguistic resources of persuasion that appear in a thematic type of his homilies. As research material, texts in two selected languages are used: Polish and Spanish, which deal only with the environmental issue. The objective of the article is to present some linguistic (rhetorical) resources of the persuasion phenomenon that appear in homilies of John Paul II. Our intention is to show, based on a series of concrete examples, what formal elements influence the persuasiveness of John Paul II's speech and how these resources vary across both languages.

In this article, we propose a reflection on the subjectivity inherent in the process of translating a literary text. Certainly, the notion of subjectivity, that is to say the conscious or non-conscious quality specific to the thinking subject, capable of altering any objectivity or fidelity of the original statement, punctuates all production of a human order, it is even more significant in the work of the practitioner, and could even distort the meaning of the start by the subtle manipulation of words and style or the exfoliation of others. The analysis to be carried out still aims to identify the reasons for resorting to this dose of infidelity: how does it impose itself on the translator's mind? What are its linguistic and discursive markers?

This paper emphasizes the contribution of dialogism to Translation Studies. In the first part of the paper, we describe the main principles of dialogism in translation, which has the advantage of highlighting the role of the translator, his/her inherent subjectivity and the autonomous status of the target text. Subjectivity in translation implies at least two occurrences: on one hand, we have identified a form of subjectivity that is the result of the translator’s creativity; on the other hand, the translator’s subjectivity may have a negative impact on an accurate rendering of the source text when it leads to a violation of meaning or when it alters the voice of the original text. These two expressions of the translator’s subjectivity are analyzed in the second part of the paper, where we examine the translation signed by Paula Romanescu of a few poems written by Lucian Blaga.

Lajos Parti Nagy is one of the least translated authors of the forefront of present day Hungarian literature; the first part of the paper tries to point out highlite the reasons for this by analyzing the transfer version of one of his best poem Fox Affair at Sunset (Rókatárgy alkonyatkor) in Croatian . The second part of the paper seeks the solutions for achieving more authentic transfer of the poem in question into Croatian by looking into Jakobson’s language dependet paronomasia.

This article analyzes the remaking of American literature and its identity, focusing transnational American literature in general and, in particular, the contemporary American novel. It discusses a sense of postnational and anational motion of/in U.S. fiction, with an emphasis on the 21st - century American novel, created by both American and non-American authors and observed from a perspective of both American and non-American Americanists. Aimed at exploring literature in motion across “imagined” borders, the article also discusses the synergies between literature and other arts and disciplines in contemporary American literatures in order to provide new insights into literature in general and American literatures in particular. In the dialogue of literature with other disciplines, it examines the synergies between the local, regional, national, and global in contemporary U.S. fiction, as well as the synergies between different discourses of contemporaneity. Moving beyond established models in the way that even the term “transnational” transcends its own definition, the aim is to newly theorize a transnational/post-national/anational as well as transtextual motion of/in American fiction toward new directions of both American and non-American creation of American literatures

Translation has been a subject much debated along the centuries. The present paper is part of an extended study aimed at recording the origin and evolution of the concept of children’s literature translation.This work has been conceived as a totalizing analysis of various theories of literary translation as well as of its essential characteristics and, in particular, the theories and traits of translation for youth. The article devises a classification of translation methods used to make the transfer between the source language and the target language which depends on the purpose of the translation. This paper focuses on two aspects. First, it analyses basic data on Spanish-Romanian professional translators’ practices regarding the documentation process based on a questionnaire and an interview. Second, it highlights, through examples, a comparative work methodology applicable to the translation legal concepts that pose a problem due to the lack of those concepts in the target language (Romanian, in this case) and in the context of the scarce number of bilingual documentation sources specialized in the legal field.

The paper starts with a literature review of the main concepts and it includes a proposal of different classifications of documentation sources useful for translators in the legal field in the Spanish-Romanian combination based on what can be considered as their needs.

The Department of Applied Linguistics, Sapientia Hungarian University in Transylvania is responsible for the Translators and Interpreters BA program, functioning since 2008. Among other courses, our students study Audiovisual Translation, during which they create an own TED Talks subtitle into Hungarian. The article categorizes their errors, relying on a database of 534 examples and the students’ personal remarks. Although we focus on spelling errors (e.g. typographical errors, specific diacritical marks, numbers or misspelt words), we also deal with technical and translation errors. The conclusions section highlights the importance of enabled language specific spell-checkers (Microsoft Office Word, SubtitleEdit or memoQ), which significantly reduce the number of these errors.

Translating Creangă’s works into Italian proves to be a demanding undertaking due to the great differences between the two languages at the level of linguistic registers. The Italian language was formed in an urban, cultured environment, which is why it hardly lends itself to representing the simple life of peasants who, in Italian space, express themselves in dialect. In Romanian, this linguistic and cultural stratification does not exist. Starting from these premises, the present paper, focused on the analysis of the Italian version of one of the most famous Creangă’s stories (Capra cu trei iezi), aims at identifying the specific elements of Romanian popular culture existing in the corpus of analysis and at illustrating the strategies used by Anna Colombo in translating the story into Italian. The study will refer to some of the Romanian researches dedicated to the concept of cultureme and its role in the linguistic mediation and it will focus on the typology of culturemes developed in the Hispanic space by Lucia Molina.

Giovanni Galvani (Modena 1806-1873) cannot be considered one of the first Italian Romance philologists, but his research on the poetry of the Provençal troubadours contributed nevertheless to the development of Romance Philology in Italy. Among his Occitan works, the Novellino provenzale, a collection of translations of troubadour vidas and razos, deserves a special mention. This book, in its early editorial stages, is the oldest Romance translation of troubadour vidas and razos, but it is not a real collection of translations: Galvani suppresses some parts of the Provençal text, inserts additions and extensively re-elaborates the plot of the ancient biographer. The reasons for these interventions, which do not derive from imperfect knowledge of the ancient Provençal language, are manifold: moral censorship, literary exegetical interventions, narrative explanations interpolated to the text where the translator did not consider troubadour prose sufficiently clear, etc. The first part of this contribution reconstructs the editorial history of the Novellino provenzale; the second part analyses Galvani’s interventions on the Provençal text and tries to explain the meaning of his personal reworking of the text of the ancient vidas.

In the early XIIIthc., Jacques de Vitry, archbishop of Saint John of Acre and papal legate in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem finalised his Historia Orientalis, a treaty collecting an abridged history of the crusades, various homiletic texts in favour of passagium generale and a report on the political and religious reality of the Holy Land on the eve of the fifth crusade. Towards the end of the same century, the scholars of the Royal Chancery of Castile discovered the HO, and nearly two centuries later the text was still spreading and still being read in its original form, in Castilian translations, or as a constituent material for interpolated works on the same subject, in both Latin or Romance. This paper presents recent results of the investigation into the first stage of dissemination of this work in the Castilian space through several copies of the Latin original, alongside with a first translation into Castilian (the Estoria de Gerusalem abreuiada – from early XIVthc.), arguably connected to the transmission and translation process of the Historia Gothorum by Ximénez de Rada. As a result, the first Castilian translation of the HO is inserted in the stemma codicum of the Historia Gothorum’ s Castilian translation, which, in our opinion, indicates the scholarly and political interest of the Castilian monarchy in matters of the Latin East.

The realization of Serbian noun diminutive forms and translating them into English is a complex process, especially in the translation of literary texts. For example, many different techniques were used to reach appropriate equivalents of Serbian diminutives in the English translation of Andrić’s Signs by the Roadside. Considering the difficulty of translating diminutives as emotional-expressive lexis, great attention in the paper is dedicated to the importance of context in translation. The aim of the paper is to point out the most successful translation technique in the translation of Serbian diminutives into the English language.
