Translation solutions in rendering diminutives from Serbian into English in signs by the roadside by Ivo Andrić

Summary/Abstract: The realization of Serbian noun diminutive forms and translating them into English is a complex process, especially in the translation of literary texts. For example, many different techniques were used to reach appropriate equivalents of Serbian diminutives in the English translation of Andrić’s Signs by the Roadside. Considering the difficulty of translating diminutives as emotional-expressive lexis, great attention in the paper is dedicated to the importance of context in translation. The aim of the paper is to point out the most successful translation technique in the translation of Serbian diminutives into the English language.
