Blended Education in Higher Schools: New Networks and Mediators

Author(s): Nikolay Tsankov,Veska Gyuviyska,Milena Levunlieva / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

The paper presents a profile of blended education as a socio-technological network based on an analysis of their contexts of understanding in higher education. The empirical study conducted through the method of surveys with students and faculty members in departments of pedagogy in Bulgarian universities confirms the idea of blended education as a technology and as a world of mediation, as well as the concept of the changing role of mediators themselves. Still, it leaves the issue of its humanization open for discussion. It foregrounds the necessity of investment in forms of education in higher schools as a prototype of the socio-technological network.

Drawing on research on reading interventions, the paper discusses the focus given to structured phonics presented in a rich language environment. It suggests that comprehension developing activities alongside the development of phonological skills should not be underestimated. Additional principles guiding instruction are identified and discussed – multisensory teaching, the role of context, mixed-ability grouping, reinforcement, overlearning and metacognition. Senior Citizens’ Existential Needs and Education for the Meaning of Life

Author(s): Norbert G. Pikuła,Katarzyna Jagielska,Joanna Łukasik / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2018

A contemporary man is embroiled in perpetual change. Living in the world in which it is more and more difficult to find permanence and constancy frequently evokes anxiety and confusion about the world and one’s own life. It is hard to find lasting values and set long- and short-term goals, which is connected with the fact that people stop perceiving their life and activity as a value, as something with the meaning and sense. They stop thinking about what is significant and meaningful and about their direction – apart from material goods, which gain in importance. However, possessing things does not make people happy because they lack the ‚essence’ necessary for achieving the climax of humanity, the meaning of life which is focoused an individual’s activity and essential attribute of his full developement. Meaning of life is made present not only in action but also in relationships with other people, God and oneself. It is very important to consider the role of meaning of life in education to old age. Education concerning meaning of life may help people function better in their everyday life, act more effectively and meet their needs. In this paper, it was presented the research about existential needs of 200 elderly people with using some standardized questionnaire “Unmet psychosocial and spiritual needs of elderly”. The final conclusions indicate the value of the religious, spiritual and social needs of the respondents.

Author(s): Lyuba Dimitrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 7/2018

The article presents the information obtained by interviewing six library specialists in correlation to a current research among primary school teachers. It represents an attempt to specify and measure some aspects of the communication and cooperation processes between representatives of the official educational system and of the libraries which are also knowledge providing organizations. The intersection points reveal the specific professional influences and relations, which impact the formation process of the young readers and the child character as a whole. The text represents just a part of the received data and some of the current tendencies. Initial conclusions: primary school teachers do not recognize library activities as a possible continuation of the educational process and young readers development; financial problems and lack of cooperation between librarians and teachers result in providing pupils with syllabus literature in most cases, thus belittling the library role and reducing its functions to just a provision of texts.

Author(s): Julia Doncheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 7/2018

European education legislation defines two main objectives of education policy: equal access to education and quality education. Equal access to education means ensuring that all children and students have access to commensurate quality education. It does not mean equal care for all children and students, but differentiation of care towards their different needs. Access to quality education, not education at all, is an essential tool in the process of promoting integration and inclusion of both minorities and marginalized groups, as well as groups of children and individuals with peculiarities and non-standard development in our society.

Кои са най-ефективните преподавателски методи в обучението по природни науки (и по-големият брой учебни часове означава ли непременно по-високи резултати – по данни на PISA 2015)

Author(s): Svetla Petrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2018

The article analyzes the relationship between teaching methods and their effectiveness in the science learning. It is based on the science component of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). In most educational systems participated in PISA, including Bulgaria, using teacher directed and adaptive instruction is associated with better scores on science. By contrast, inquiry-based instruction is associated with lower achievement in science. Why is that? Does it mean that the PISA findings do not support the conviction that the development of science skills through inquiry is a vital part of learning science in school. These are the questions that are investigated in the article. The author is a PISA 2015 National Project Manager in Bulgaria.
